Maybe I had been born only to carry the Moon Goddess’s anger.

What else could this be? Three years. Three years I had begged her to let me forget his face, and she had answered me by putting him at the end of a corridor.

A laugh broke out of me, small and cracked. I pressed my palm over my mouth to keep the tears in.

It couldn’t have been him; maybe I was wrong.

I gripped the edge of the table and forced myself to breathe.

It had been a long day. Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me, and the shock had made me see things that weren’t there.

Anyone could mistake a stranger for someone they had spent years trying to forget.

Yes. That had to be it.

Because what were the chances? After three long years, why would Darius suddenly appear in the very place I had gone to work?

The man at the end of that corridor could have been a stranger with black curls and green eyes. Maybe I had simply seen what I had spent years dreading.

I shook my head, trying to convince myself that I was making sense.

Except strangers didn’t look at me like that.

My stomach dropped.

Even if it had been him, perhaps he hadn’t recognized me. I was thinner now. My hair was longer, and I wasn’t looking like the girl who had pulled him out of the forest. It had been three years. People forget faces.

The only thing wrong with  that logic is that he hadn’t forgotten. I knew it from the way he had stared at me.

Then a thought crept in, cold and sharp.

What if he followed me?

I shot to my feet so fast the chair scraped the floor. My heart hammered as I crossed the room in one step.

I pressed my ear to the door and listened.

Nothing. Just the wind and the faint chirping of crickets sounded somewhere down the corridor.

I cracked the door open and peered out. The hallway was empty. No shadows, no footsteps.

I shut it and slid the lock into place. Then I checked it again.

It was a long way from the pack house. He couldn’t have followed me without me noticing. I told myself that twice, but my hands still wouldn’t stop shaking.

Then from the bedroom came the soft sound of Kaila’s sleeping breath.

My blood ran cold.

Whatever happened, whatever he knew or didn’t know, Darius could never find out about them.

I had survived losing my pack. I had survived being left at the altar. But if he ever looked into my son’s face and saw his own eyes looking back…

I would lose everything.

And I had no idea what kind of man he had become in those three years.

That was what terrified me most.

I pulled out the chair and sat back down, my legs unsteady.

I had to go back. It was a big house, and he was probably only passing through, a visitor or a guest who would be gone by tomorrow. I would stay in the back corridors, keep my head down, and finish my work. What were the odds of running into him twice?

I had just begun to feel a little better about my decision when another thought struck me.

The vase.

I closed my eyes.

I had broken Lady Liora’s vase and run off without so much as an explanation. What would she think when she found out? I had barely started working there, and I’d already given her a reason to regret hiring me.

What if she fired me on the spot, in front of everyone?

My stomach twisted.

Perhaps going back was a mistake. I could find another job, somewhere far from that house, somewhere I wouldn’t have to worry about running into Darius.

It was better to leave on my own terms than return only to be thrown out.

Three hard knocks shook the door.

I froze, my heart stopping in my chest.

“Elaria! I know you’re in there!”

I let out a breath so sharp it hurt. Not him. The landlord.

I opened the door a crack, and Mr. Hobbs filled the gap, his face red, his thumbs hooked in his belt.

“Your two days are up, Elaria. Rent was due days ago.”

“I start a new job today,” I said quickly. “I’ll have it by the end of the week. I promise.”

“End of the week, or you’re out.” He jabbed a finger at me. “I’m not running a charity.”

He stomped away, and I shut the door and leaned against it, my forehead pressed to the wood.

“Mommy?”

I turned.

Kieran stood in the bedroom doorway in his nightshirt, rubbing one eye. The lamplight caught his face, and those green eyes settled on me, sharp and unblinking even half asleep.

“Who was shouting?”

“No one, baby.” I crossed the room and knelt in front of him, smoothing his dark hair. “Just a man who had the wrong door.”

He studied me for a long moment. “You’re lying.”

“Go back to bed, baby.”

He didn’t move. He just reached up and wiped a tear from my cheek I hadn’t known was there.

“Are you sad because of the bad man?”

My breath caught. “What bad man?”

“The one who makes you cry in your sleep.” I pulled him into my arms before he could see my face.

Behind him, I could see Kaila’s small shape curled beneath the blanket, one fist tucked under her chin. If I ran, they would be the ones who paid for it. Cold floors. Empty bowls. A door that wouldn’t lock.

I would not let that happen. Not because of him.

I’d go back tomorrow, apologize to Lady Liora, and take whatever punishment came. I would keep my head down, stay out of sight, and be gone by evening.

And in a house that big, Darius would never even know I was there.

Elaria is terrified, and the twins are the reason. Would you go back to that house if you were her? Tell me below, and thank you for reading. You comment keeps me writing.

Elaria POVI couldn’t sleep. The twins were breathing softly beside me. Kaila was sprawled across the bed, one fist tucked under her chin, while Kieran was curled against my side. I gently pulled out from between them.I sat on the garden swing. The moon was unusually bright tonight, casting a soft glow over the garden. I stared up at it, and a smile slowly spread across my face as the memory of the forehead kiss crept into my thoughts.I giggled. Then, just as quickly, my smile disappeared.I wanted to smack my head. Why on earth had I called him cute?Argh!I covered my face with both hands, groaning at my own stupidity. Of all the things I could have said, that was what came out of my mouth?I was still muttering to myself when I spotted someone at the far end of the maze.I strained my eyes to make out who it was, and then I saw strands of platinum blonde hair peeking out from the shawl wrapped around her head.Selene.What was she doing out here at this hour, and who was she talk

Elaria POV“No.”“Elaria—”“I said no, Kade.”“Listen, I know I probably don’t have the right to say this to you, but please, just hear me out.”I folded my arms, glaring at him, but said nothing.“Darius can be quite annoying. Hell, he’s made plenty of mistakes. Trust me, I know that better than anyone. But he’s not a bad person, Eliy.”I looked away.“I’ve seen the two of you together. I’ve seen the way you avoid each other, and I’ve seen how much that silence is affecting both of you, especially Darius.”“Then perhaps he should have thought about that before—”I immediately stopped myself. I didn’t know how much Kade knew about my relationship with Darius. His voice softened.“I’m not asking you to forgive him. Whatever happened between you two, I know it wasn’t pleasant. You don’t have to tell me the details, either. But I think you should at least give him a chance to explain himself.”I stared at my hands. The thought of having a conversation with Darius made my chest tighten. T

Elaria POVI practically jumped out of my skin, immediately stepping away from Darius.Selene’s face came into view. Her eyes moved from Darius, who was still standing with nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist, to me. I watched her expression change. Her lips parted slightly, and something unpleasant flashed across her face. But it disappeared almost as quickly as it had come.I glanced at Darius. He didn’t look too pleased to see her. Maybe because she had interrupted something.“Baby, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”She approached him, her eyes briefly travelling over his bare chest before she turned towards me.“Oh, Elaria. I didn’t realise you were here.”She’s such a two-faced bi*ch.Of course she didn’t.I pressed my lips together.“I was just bringing the Alpha his coffee.”Her eyes flickered towards the tray on the bedside table.“His coffee?” She gave a small laugh. “Is that what we’re calling it now?”“Selene,” Darius warned. She immediately turned to him, he

Elaria POV“This damn Alpha!”I stirred the coffee in front of me with a bit more force than necessary. This was the third cup I was making for him.The third! The first one had apparently been too sweet.“No, Elaria. This is too sweet. I like my coffee a little bitter. Just two teaspoons of sugar.”I mimicked his deep voice, complete with the straight face he had worn while giving me those instructions.I had bowed, apologized, and gone back to make another cup, only for him to reject that one too.“No. This is too bitter.”I stopped stirring.“He told me to add two teaspoons of sugar!” I hissed at the empty kitchen. “Two! And that is exactly what I did. So how is it suddenly too bitter?”I looked down at the coffee again. Then a wicked smile appeared on my face.Perhaps I should add salt.At least then he would have something worth complaining about. But I thought better of it. Instead, I added a little more sugar and continued muttering under my breath.“Eliy?”I nearly jumped out

Darius POV“I heard you put a maid in your quarters,” my mother said, sipping her coffee. Selene sat beside her on the edge of the sofa, hands folded in her lap, her eyes just wet enough to shine.“She had nowhere to go, and it’s my responsibility to care for everyone, servant or not.”“I never said you shouldn’t help her, Darius.” My mother set her cup down. “But putting her on your floor? That is disrespectful to your future Luna.”She turned to Selene, looking at her with the kind of affection she rarely bothered to hide.“That floor is meant for you and your Luna. Not for a maid.”I understood my mother’s concerns. She had always been particular about the traditions of our pack, especially when it came to the woman who would eventually stand beside me. And Selene had spent the past years expecting to be that woman. That didn’t mean I would change my mind because of it.She lowered her gaze, and I sighed.I had never been good at these conversations. Selene was sweet, and I knew sh

Elaria POV“Your name is Elaria, right?” The guy walking beside me asked as we climbed the stairs.“Yes,” I replied cautiously.“I’m Darius’s Beta, but you can call me Kade.” He gave me a big smile. “So, Eliy…”I raised a brow. “Eliy?”He immediately looked a little sheepish. I’m sorry if that made you uncomfortable. I heard the kids in the pack calling you that, so I thought…”“It’s fine, Kade.”He was actually quite sweet. I felt a little more relaxed around him, though I didn’t know why.The room was bigger than our entire apartment had been.“You can breathe, you know,” Kade said from the doorway.I glanced at him. “Why are we on the upper floor?”“I don’t know. He just told me to bring you here.”I looked around the room again, wondering why Darius had specifically chosen this part of the house for us.“So,” Kade said, interrupting my thoughts. “What’s going on between you and the Alpha?”I looked up at him.“Nothing.”He glanced over his shoulder, a knowing smile playing on his
