Dorian looked taken aback. Serena felt her cheeks flare. She hadn’t meant to reply so quickly, but when he suddenly said that his grandfather wanted him to choose a mate, something in her protested, something dark twisted her guts, but then he asked to be his mate and the book flashed across her mind. Wouldn’t the book be safer if it was out of anyone’s reach?
“I mean…” she hurriedly tried to amend, vaguely moving her hands, “If you want. I mean…” She slumped back in her seat because she didn’t know what to seem desperate. For an odd reason, she thought only this person was true to her, which was bizarre because he had been secretive and had broken their bond in the first place. The burning sensation under the wristband which she had been wearing ever since the mark reappeared made her hiss.

She felt more like the day she had fled from that horrible house, fled from being accused of witchcraft. The scent of incense and wood calmed her senses. Dorian had opted to stay outside.
