First light reached the private wing without any further test of the doors.

I had slept in short, shallow stretches, waking each time the watch changed or Kael shifted in the outer room. The connecting door had stayed open the entire night. The silver cuff rested warm against my wrist. The Burden remained low. When the pale edge of morning finally showed, Kael was already on his feet and speaking with the captain of the permanent post in a voice too low for the corridor to carry.

He finished th

The hung weight of the claim key came back for a final angle just before the vault watch called residual pressure dead.I felt it settle over the current like a net dropping—cleaner than the first attempt, aimed at the thin place where the second girl’s exhaustion and mine overlapped. The broken loop pressed for a seat hard enough that the cuff went cold and the posts locked on my arms without a word. Through the thread, the second girl met it with the last of her strength. The incomplete channel between us became a single contested line: two carriers refusing, one will trying to aim the lens from inside the bloodline’s own script.“Seating,” I said. “Final. Both ends.”Kael’s voice from the binding frame did not rise. It did not need to.“Refuse it. Together. End the claim.”There was no careful aiming left. No directed strike at a single function. I reached through the Burden and the silver and the thin, exhausted thread with everything the private wing, the eastern join, and the va

The name changed the air on the command level more than the claim marks had.I stayed on the threshold of Kael’s chamber with the doubled posts at my back and the cold cuff quiet on my wrist. The residual demand remained thin and directionless. The vault name stayed muffled. The second girl’s presence carried a low, continuous recognition of the archive line—the broken loop, the reading blood, the will that had learned the binding from the inside and then turned it against the keep it was meant to protect.Kael had the name restricted to the tightest possible line: himself, Elder Orion, Ronan, the signal watch lead, and me. No general posting. No corridor talk. A former Moonveil binder recorded as dead was not a rumour the keep could absorb in the middle of a stalled core rise and an active internal sweep.“Ronan has the name,” Kael said. The binding frame still held him. The packing at his ribs was cleaner. His voice was not. “Vault residual is near the eastern join’s withdrawal leve

The silver shaving reached Elder Orion’s hands before the internal sweep had cleared three corridors.I watched from the threshold of Kael’s chamber while the old wolf turned the thin fragment in the light. It was the same pale metal as the cuff on my wrist—same cold sheen, same faint residual tremor when it came near the active silver I wore. The mark scored into it was not a letter in any script I knew. It was a closed loop broken at one point by a single inward cut, like a channel drawn and then deliberately interrupted.Elder Orion’s face went still.“This is not a signature left to frighten corridor posts,” he said. “This is a claim mark. Old Moonveil work used broken loops to mark a current that had been taken from one binding and aimed at another. Someone walked into a restricted hall above the core and left proof that the channel between the two carriers is still considered reachable property.”Kael’s voice from the binding frame was flat and absolute.“The sweep continues unt

The blindness on the vault name held through the first full stretch of Ronan’s window.I stayed on the threshold under restraint that had eased from full lock to ready grip, the cuff cold against my wrist where the inverted burn had settled. The residual demand was still present—directionless weight without a clean target. The vault line’s name sat in the current like something behind thick glass. I could sense it if I reached. I could not read it clearly. The second girl’s presence matched the same muffled state from the secured room, thin and steady, the shared refusal still costing both of us in the tremor under the silver.Kael watched the cold cuff as if it might turn hot again without warning.“Still blind on the name.”“Still blind. Demand without a target. She is the same. The window is holding on our end.”“Ronan spends the window on bracing and nothing else. Marks only if the blindness starts to thin. Restraint stays ready. The design will not leave a blinded map unanswered

The lower probe found a gap in the bracing just before the next mark was due.I felt the residual demand sharpen into a lock so fast the posts closed on my arms before the word was fully out of my mouth. The cuff went hot with a focused, downhill pull aimed at a specific point on the vault spine below the braced section. The second girl’s presence slammed into the same lock from the secured room. For a moment the incomplete channel was nothing but a single clear line into the keep’s core and the design’s certainty that the line was enough.“Lock,” I said. “Lower vault. Hard. Demand climbing.”Kael’s voice hit the corridor like a blade.“Full restraint. Mark to Ronan as emergency. Heavy spend authorised if the seat is forming. Western flank holds. No draw. Move.”The runner was already gone. The posts locked my arms and took the weight as the demand climbed toward compulsion. Through the current, the second girl went to full restraint the same way. The vault line’s name sat in both of

The vault line held through the next hour by bracing and small, ugly cuts.I stayed on the threshold under ready restraint, palm under the cuff, tracking a residual demand that refused to drop back into a harmless lean. The current pointed at the wounded vault spine under the main halls with a certainty that no longer felt like borrowed guidance. It felt like recognition. The second girl’s presence carried the same recognition from the secured room—exhausted, braced, and unsettled by the name the channel had given her without a map.Kael watched the silver and my face with equal weight.“Still vault.”“Still vault. Demand is high residual. Not climbing. Not falling. She says the name sits in the current as it belongs there.”“The name does not give either of you a reason to move. Marks only. Restraint stays armed.”He had allowed the healers to change the packing again and refused the sleep binding for the third time since he woke. The dull gold of his eyes was clearer. The body under
