Chapter 3 Wolfie

I opened the door slowly as I entered the office

"Come in, have a seat," Mr Girard said, looking at a file that was on his table.

I closed the door behind me once I was inside the big office and walked towards his table.

Sitting on the chair near his table opposite him, I used the opportunity to assess the office. It was large and spacious, shelves were aligning the walls of the office with books arranged neatly on it.

Some of the books on the shelves didn't seem to be related to office work, they looked kind of ancient.

"Miss Riley Martin," he said, interrupting me from my sight seeing.

"Yes" I turned to him and he looked up from the file he had been reading.

He gasped when he looked at me and his eyes widened in surprise.

I wondered if I had something on my face that everyone keeps staring at me strangely.

"Is there something on my face?" I spoke up, seeing that he was still staring at me.

"Oh, I didn't mean to be rude, your eyes?" He said in the form of a question.

" Shit, I am sorry, I forgot to wear my glasses" I apologized. People always say my eyes are scary so I bought a pair of glasses that I always wear when I go out. That explains why the receptionist and Cassie stared at me strangely.

" No, that's not what I mean, your eyes remind me of someone"

" Really, who? '' I asked. I wanted to meet the person. If you asked why it's to prove to myself that having two different eye colours is not strange.

"My sister"

I smiled widely "can I meet her"

"No, she is dead"

I felt guilty, I reminded him of his dead sister "I am sorry"

"It's no problem, you didn't know, besides it happened a long time ago" he replied "you don't seem to like your eyes"

I nodded "everyone says I'm weird because of it"

"Being different doesn't make you weird, it makes you special" he gave me a warm smile "you are special Riley, don't forget about that"

"Thank you" I returned the smile "what was her name.....your sister,", I asked.

"Scarlet" he replied

"If you don't mind, can you tell me about her"

" Scarlet was special, strong and bold, she always cared for everyone" I could see the spark in his eyes as he talked about her, he was proud of her and it was obvious he still misses her.

" She seems like a nice person"

" She is, you know, she died protecting the man she loved"

Hearing that I felt a kind of pain in my chest and a scene appeared in my head in a flash.

"Are you alright?" he asked, concerned.

"Yes, it's nothing," I replied.

"You are strong and kind, just like Scarlet"

"You think so," I asked, I was nothing like her, she died protecting the man she loved while I killed the man I loved.

" Yes, I wouldn't want to bore you with my pity story," he said " congratulations on getting picked as an intern"

" Thank you"

" Since you are new here, I will ask Cassie to tell you everything you need to know about the company, after your orientation, you can leave and start your work tomorrow"

" Thank you, Mr Girard"

" No need for the formalities, My name is Cyrus Girard, so you can just call me Cyrus"

" What about CY," I asked

He chuckled " you are bold, giving your boss a nickname"

I smiled " you said it yourself, we are beyond formalities"

" You know, only Scarlet calls me that"

" Oh, I'm sorry, I w…."

" No it's okay, since you remind me of her, you can call me whatever you wish"

I nodded. " Can I ask you for something"

" Sure, anything"

" The books here can I borrow one"

" You like to read," he asked

I nodded.

" Okay, make your pick"

I was excited " thank you"

I walked to the shelves and picked randomly " this one will do"

" It's a historical book, I am sure you would love it"

"Thank you" I replied.

After the orientation with Cassie, I decided to leave seeing that I didn't have anything else to do. Louis said he was going to pick me up at six and it's just four, which means I have two hours to explore Toronto before he comes.

I remembered seeing a forest when we drove there. I am a nature lover, and that's the best place for me to spend the rest of my day.

I walked out of the company after saying goodbye to Cassie. Remembering where I had seen it I walked a little distance away from the company and saw the forest, I inhaled the smell of wet soil and leaves which was nerve calming.

Walking into the forest, the sight was amazing. I felt like resting here to read the book I had gotten from Cyrus.

I sighted a big oak tree and sat under it. I brought the book out of my bag, it seems old, well it's a historical book.

After reading the book for some minutes, I decided to close my eyes a little to take a nap, but I heard a snap of twigs. Being alert, I looked around but didn't see anyone. Ignoring it, I closed my eyes and listened to the voices of the singing birds and insects in the forest but something was strange, I could hear heavy breathing and then a growl.

I opened my eyes, startled and what I saw made me shiver in fear. It was a wolf, a big white wolf, and when I say big I mean it was towering over me.

I screamed and moved back cold sweats forming on my forehead, my back hit the tree trapping me between the wolf and the tree, leaving no room for me to escape.

Tears slipped from my eyes, would I die by being eaten by a wolf, I have never seen a wolf before, but one thing I know is that wolves were beasts and they were carnivals, they eat humans, hell I just became a wolf meal.

I pushed myself towards the wall like it would open then I would enter it and be safe from the wolf.

I gave up on shouting seeing that my voice was only echoing in the forest, there was no one here to rescue me, I was doomed.

I looked at the wolf as it walked slowly towards me, tears flowed freely from my eyes, and I bit my quivering lips, I was so scared, I didn't even know what to do.

"Please don't hurt me" I cried out like the wolf could understand me.

The wolf stopped in his tracks and whimpered, staring at me.

I was astonished, could it understand me, I was a little bit relieved seeing that it stopped but to my dismay, it got close to me and I closed my eyes waiting for the worst.

One… two…..three…. four…. Nothing happened, and then I felt a soft fur on my lap.

Opening my eyes, I saw the wolf resting his head on my lap with his eyes staring at me.

HIS EYES, it was red with golden streaks twirling in them. It reminded me of someone I met today. Those red eyes were filled with warmth and it seems so humane. The wolf looked at me as though he was guilty and nudged my hand with his head.

I felt like I understood him and raised my hand wanting to pay his head. I was hesitant at first but slowly put my hand on his head. I waited for his reaction before stroking it softly. The wolf purred and I was surprised.

"You aren't wild" I smiled using my other hand to wipe my tear stained cheeks

It was so cute, seeing how it was reacting to my touch and his fur was so white and soft.

"What's your name?" I was feeling silly, wolves couldn't talk. "How about I give you one"

He growled

I took it as a yes and thought about a name.

"I will give you Steroid" seeing that he was huge, the name would fit him.

The wolf growled aggressively.

"Oh, you don't like it, hmmmmmm, what about……. Ryder"

I got the same reaction. After guessing more names, I still got the same reaction indicating that he didn't like the name.

" I am out of names wh …. Oh… how about Wolfie," I said chuckling at the silly name I picked but to my surprise the wolf agreed.

" Oh, you like it, okay, I will call you Wolfie," I said, smiling and stroking him.

" So Wolfie, do you have an owner"

He growled loudly, not liking what I asked. I guessed he would actually have an owner, seeing how tamed he was but it seems he doesn't.

" I don't think you have any friends seeing you are alone"

Wolves move in a pack, if he isn't with his pack, it means he didn't have one.

The world was scary, if people found out that this kind of wolf was leaving with them, it would seem like a threat to them, and they would eventually hunt it down.

"Don't worry Wolfie, I will protect you" I know I sound stupid.

"My name is Riley, do you…" I was interrupted by my phone. I checked the caller id and it was Louis, oh, shit, it's already six.

I looked at Wolfie and as though he understood, he raised his head from my lap.

" I'm sorry I need to go, I would love to stay with you, but I don't want others to know about you, or they would freak out" I stood up and dusted my skirt "I promise to come back tomorrow… bye Wolfie" I waved before walking away and I could still feel his eyes at my back.
