The heavy iron bolt of the front door clicked into place, the sound echoing through the silent cabin.

Aunt Mira was leaving, stepping back out into the rain with one final warning glare aimed directly at the Alpha.

“Zero stress, Ace. If her pulse spikes, her heart fails.”

The warning hung between them, thick and suffocating.

Rose remained pressed against the kitchen counter, her fingers gripping the edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

Her claws were gone.

Her fangs had retracted

The pack house woke before dawn under a heavy, suffocating blanket of dread. Warriors patrolled the perimeter in tight, doubled shifts, their eyes constantly scanning the dark tree line. The heavy iron gates remained firmly sealed, and a strict lockdown order kept all civilians indoors after sunset. Out at the northern boundary, Ace stood beside Jax, inspecting the site where the sentinel had fallen. There were no boot prints, no claw marks, and no familiar wolf musk. There was only a patch of frozen, blackened ground where the grass had withered down to the roots and a strange metallic frost that lingered on the bark of the surrounding pines even as the morning sun rose. "The border scent markers are completely dead," Jax reported, his voice tight with frustration as he checked his tactical tracker. "It's like whatever passed through swallowed its own signature. The wards didn't trip, and our tracking hounds won't even go near the perimeter." Ace's jaw clenched, his golden eyes

The courtyard was dead silent save for the harsh, ragged breathing of the sentinels forming a tight perimeter around the steps. Ace knelt on the cold flagstones, his hands slick with the sentinel's blood. He gently closed the dead guard's eyes, his jaw locked so tightly that a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. Jax stepped forward, his face pale under the moonlight. "Alpha. The frost on the wound... it's not from a natural winter. And the wards didn't trigger a standard magical alert. Whatever hit him bypassed the threshold like it wasn't even there." Ace stood slowly, wiping the dark blood from his fingers with a rag. His golden eyes locked onto the edge of the timberline, sharp and calculating. "Whatever crossed our borders is unlike anything we've faced before. Until we know what we're dealing with, no one leaves the pack house without orders." He paused, his gaze sweeping over the tense guards before adding, "It wasn't a wolf. There were no tracks. No familiar musk."

The dawn broke over Nightroot with a cold, heavy gray light, but Rose had been awake for hours. She lay rigid in bed, her senses stretched taut across the entire estate. Without trying, she could hear the precise cadence of the morning patrol changing shifts three miles away along the northern boundary. Through the stone and timber of the pack house, the dull, rhythmic thuds of wolves already sparring in the training grounds vibrated against her eardrums like a drumbeat. When she finally pushed herself up and walked to the bathroom, she paused at the mirror. She splashed cold water over her face, blinking hard. For a fraction of a second, her reflection stared back with eyes that flashed a brilliant metallic silver rimmed with deep, bruised crimson.Rose gasped, slamming her hands against the sink. By the time she forced her breathing to steady, her eyes were back to their ordinary brown. She quickly dried her face, hiding the lingering terror behind a mask of calm before anyone could

The morning after the audit, the atmosphere across the Nightroot territory had fundamentally shifted. When Rose walked through the central courtyard, she noticed the change immediately. The warriors and sentinels who had eyed her with suspicion or outright hostility all week now carried a tense, cautious reverence in their postures. A few of the ranking guards dipped their heads respectfully as she passed, acknowledging not just the human girl who had stood against Vane's silver, but the sheer grit that had earned their Alpha's absolute loyalty.Yet, the respect only made her skin crawl with unease. They were bowing to a ghost, to a human lie.The real danger wasn't external anymore. It was happening beneath her own skin.Rose woke before dawn, not to an alarm, but to the sharp, clear sound of the northern border patrols changing shifts three miles away through the dense timber. Her senses were warping. At breakfast, the scent of the pack house kitchen was overwhelming. Every individ

The heavy doors clicked shut, locking out the humiliation of Delegate Vane’s departure and leaving Elder Vance and Tanya standing in an empty, echoing hall.Upstairs, in the private chambers, the heavy air of the grand hall dissolved into a tense, suffocating quiet. Ace set Rose down on the edge of the velvet settee, but he didn't step back. His massive frame hovered over her, his golden eyes burning with a volatile mix of leftover battle fury and raw, unadulterated terror. He reached out, his large hands peeling back the fabric of his jacket where her palm had been pressed. The skin was entirely smooth. Not a single scar, not a trace of a silver burn remained. Her hybrid metabolism had worked too fast, erasing the evidence before Vane could blink. But the absence of the wound didn't calm Ace down; if anything, it made his jaw lock tighter."You are out of your mind," Ace growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the room. He caught her chin in his hand, forcing her to lo

The morning air in the grand hall felt cold and stagnant, heavy with the scent of an impending trap. When Rose descended the grand staircase, she did not find the usual bustling dawn patrol. Instead, the entire high circle was assembled in a rigid semicircle around the long oak table. Ace stood at the head, his jaw locked so tightly the muscle leaped in his cheek. Jax and Aunt Mira were flanked to his left, their postures intensely guarded. At the center of the room stood Delegate Vane, his black leather ledger closed on the table and a long, velvet-lined case resting beside it."Ah, the subject of our week long observation," Vane said, his smooth, dry voice cutting through the silence as Rose reached the floorboards. His slate-gray eyes were sharper than they had been all week. "Perfect timing, Rose. Before the delegation departs for the city center at noon, there is one final, mandatory protocol required to clear Vance’s emergency petition."Rose kept her expression entirely neutr
