JACE.

I was restless, anxious, worried, and probably scared. An exhausted sigh eased through me as my eyes glanced in the direction of the corridor for the thirteenth time already. Why was she late? She was always on time.

For some reason, I'd slept like shit last night, haunted by the recollection of her coldness, how bitter she made me feel. And those harsh words she spouted last night—it didn’t sit well with me. When the hell did Nina grow up? She was always cute, lovely, and always playful. And I'd never seen her speak to anyone like that.

It sucked. Killian returned to his home last night, although he'd promised to visit, then backed out. He did send me some jumbled-up message saying we were cool, but he was too tired to drive back here. It was a lie I didn’t buy, but I understood. With Aiden probably hovering around, coming here might not be the best solution at the moment.

My heart jumped in my chest at the sight of Nina finally rounding her way through the corridor. Dark circl

JACEDragging out a little puff of smoke before tossing it into the ashtray. My fingers trailed over the textbook. Line after line I read, yet nothing made sense to me—just jumbled-up words filled with nonsense. My mind drifted away from the notes. Fuck, I had two different assignments to turn in within two days, I had four different projects to work on, and I also had to practice for the game we had this weekend. A buzz settled on my phone—it was an update on my socials. Killian was out with the boys. He’d invited me, but I’d managed to pull out some out-of-this-world sort of excuse to avoid going.I couldn’t choose. Between him and Nima? Especially not when Nima and I had just gotten started on these little game sites we were going to play. And then… Killian. I couldn’t cut him off. He was my best pal, I’d need him. Worse still—Aiden. How dare he tell me what to do? I was here holed up in my room, reading and smoking blunt after blunt, while news was out there partying casually. I d

JACEThe day had passed by, pleasure thrummed in me, a wide smile splitting my face each minute I recalled how easy it had been for Nima to fall right into my trap. I mean, did she possibly think I could fall for her? I liked her; she was cool, cute and all. She was a tough challenge, but that was not all there was to it…“I need all your attention, each one of y’all,” Killian ordered. My gaze lifted to lock with that of Killian’s, who passed me a friendly wink as we all hovered closer to him.“There’ll be a match. In a week. Our team needs to win. It’s nothing big, just a friendly team pushing against another, yet I can’t just let us lose. So we practice today—us against ourselves,” he spoke. Everyone was paying rapt attention to him now as he gestured towards us.“Aiden , you play with Jace and three others stay on your team, while the rest stay with me,” Killian ordered. I could swear he divided the team just to suit his purpose. He and Aiden had fallen off real bad; I enjoyed it

NINA.This shit did not just happen. I was hallucinating? Or I must have heard him wrong, right? It made sense that way. There is no way he'd just dared me into a bet like that.“Clock’s ticking. You can chicken out, I’ll understand. You still are a child anyway—little Nina, who runs and comes to her big brother for protection. Little Nina who…”“Are you nuts?” I screamed. The entire hallway glanced sideways in our direction, no doubt itching for something new to gossip about. I cursed beneath my breath, realizing I’d been the one to stomp my feet and ask for discretion, yet here I was making a fool of myself for them to see.“Fuck, Killian would murder you. And why would I want to do something as reckless as that? Make you—the school’s playboy—fall for me? What do I stand to gain from that?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribcage now, my palms getting sweaty as I tried the best I could to put up a proper and controlled front to him.“Fine, I knew you wouldn’t. Anyways, I’d a

NINA.I watched my face pale from fear with trembling fingers, unable to move. Jace swung harder after each blow. Derek fought back, but he was slower compared to Jace, which gave him an advantage. He slammed Derek backward, into the floor, knelt over him, his shirt bunched up in one arm, while he beat him continuously with the other. My voice was caught in my throat. There’s blood everywhere, running down the sides of Derek’s lips, his eyes swollen, bleeding. And Jace? He looked different, like a possessed freak, beating him up, his face broken into a twisted sneer.“Jace! Stop!” My brother’s voice called right by my side. Killian started forward, yanking up Jace’s fists and shoving him off Derek, who still seemed to be kneeling. A few workers from the back had rounded up, too, watching keenly.“That bastard!” Jace cursed, his voice holding a deep baritone to them that had me frightened. I’d never seen him look so miserable, so dreadful, so rebellious. But then, hadn’t he left for ye

NINA.Loud music blasted through the speakers, bodies flooded in and out of the dance floors, words were beginning to blur out in my mind, the images tripling, my head felt featherweight light, and for some reason, I wouldn’t stop laughing.I’d taken Kate’s advice—to let loose, have fun, feel free, let him see you for who you are. Except now this advice would probably spin off on me and bite me in the ass.“Didn’t know she could dance like that, wow!” I could hear Marcus’s voice from behind, cheering me on.“There are a lot of things I can do. Too bad you’re taken,” I whispered, passing a wink to Kate, who erupted into a burst of laughter.“Nina, I’ll be sure to remind you of everything you do today. What have you done with my sulking shy roommate?” Kate teased, throwing her arms around Marcus’s neck. I wheezed past the dancing floor, heading toward the bar when I lost my balance, tipping forward and knocking off every content in my line of sight by accident.“Easy, love,” Derek, one
