Seren knew something was wrong the moment she entered Ronan's study.

The curtains were drawn despite the afternoon sun. Three documents lay scattered across his desk, and a glass of untouched whiskey sat beside an open ledger. Near the fireplace, two guards stood silently, their expressions grim.

Ronan was by the window, speaking to someone through his phone.

"No one leaves the estate," he ordered. "Not until we establish how he entered the territory."

He ended the call and turned toward Seren.

The bell rang a fourth time.Seren had never heard a sound that could make an entire corridor feel colder.Ronan stood motionless beside the archive door, the black leather case held tightly in one hand. The guards stationed outside had already drawn their weapons, but none of them dared move without his command."What happens when that bell rings?" Seren asked.Ronan looked toward the northern end of the estate."It means someone has presented a claim under the original council laws.""Claim to what?""An audience. Protection. Or authority over a matter governed by the old covenant.""Which one is it this time?""I don't know."She studied his face."You're worried.""I'm calculating.""You're worried and calculating."He gave her a brief look."Do you always have to be right?""Only when you're being difficult."Under different circumstances, he might have smiled.Instead, he handed the case to a guard."Take this to my study. Lock it in the inner safe. No one opens it without my au

He wore an old military uniform bearing the insignia of the northern pack.Seren stu

“Your mother didn't disappear to save you.”Cassian Thorne's words echoed through the ruined sanctuary.“She disappeared because she was afraid of what you would become.”For a moment, Seren couldn't move. The crossbow bolts still protruded from the wooden frame near the entrance. Dust floated through the pale morning light, and somewhere beyond the sanctuary walls, guards were shouting as they searched the surrounding forest.Yet all Seren could hear was Cassian's voice.“What does that mean?” she demanded.Cassian removed his gloves one finger at a time.“Your mother understood what you were long before you did.”“Stop talking in riddles.”“I'm afraid the truth is rarely as simple as people would like.”Ronan stepped forward, placing himself between Cassian and Seren.“You brought armed men into my territory and attacked a gathering under my protection. You have approximately ten seconds to explain yourself before I have you restrained.”Cassian glanced at him.“Still making threats

Seren didn't sleep.Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the photograph of her mother. The same face she had mourned for eight years. The same woman whose absence had shaped every important decision in her life.Alive.The word should have brought her comfort.Instead, it filled her with questions. Why hadn't Liora returned? Who had kept her hidden? And why did someone suddenly want Seren to find her now? Most importantly, what was the Silver Seal, and why did the message insist that she bring it?At six in the morning, Seren was already dressed. She wore dark trousers, a fitted black coat, and the boots she usually reserved for traveling beyond the estate. The silver pendant hung beneath her shirt, pressed against her skin. The bracelet was in her pocket. She hadn't told Ronan about the inscription. She wasn't sure why. Perhaps because she needed one piece of the truth that belonged to her alone.A knock interrupted her thoughts."Come in."Ronan entered without his usual entourag

The footsteps stopped outside the door.Seren tightened her grip around the silver pendant. The engraved name, MARA VALE, seemed to stare back at her, demanding answers she wasn't prepared to face.Ronan stood between her and the entrance, one hand resting on the weapon at his waist."Whatever happens," he said quietly, "let me speak first."Seren lifted her chin. "You can ask your questions. But if this woman knows something about my mother, I'm getting answers too.""Seren—""I'm not asking permission."His gaze met hers. For a moment, neither moved. Then Ronan stepped aside, just enough to let her stand beside him rather than behind him."Fine," he said. "But stay close."Three knocks sounded."Enter."The door opened. Two guards escorted a woman into the room. She wore a dark traveling cloak, its hem stained with mud. Her hair was streaked with gray, though her face didn't look old enough to explain it. A shallow cut ran along her temple, and her hands were bound in front of her.

Seren read the note for the fourth time.ASK YOUR MOTHER.SHE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.The words were written in black ink, the handwriting precise enough to look deliberate rather than hurried. Whoever had left it knew exactly which questions would hurt her most. Her mother had been dead for eight years. At least, that was what Seren had been told. She folded the note and slipped it into the inner pocket of her coat. The corridor outside the archive smelled of rain, old stone, and blood. Two guards were carrying the injured sentry toward the infirmary while another stood beside the shattered window, inspecting the broken latch.Someone had entered a supposedly secure wing, attacked a guard, and left a message for her. This was no longer an investigation into a dead man's reputation. It was a warning."Lady Seren."She turned.Ronan stood at the end of the corridor, his expression unreadable. His black coat was damp at the shoulders, and a thin streak of blood marked one of his knuck
