Evelyn Severa's POV:

At 6:00 p.m., I laid out six different dinner dishes on the long stone table, each seasoned with Callum Wolffang's favorite hint of vanilla.

At 7:00 p.m., I lit a vanilla-scented candle in Callum’s room, letting the calming fragrance seep into the walls, soothing his restless wolf. I checked the bathwater, ensuring it remained at exactly 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit—the perfect temperature for a werewolf to relax.

At 8:00 p.m., I placed his favorite boots by the door and hung his outdoor cape beside them, brushing my fingers briefly over the worn fabric.

At 9:00 p.m., I changed into the black lace outfit he had picked for me.

The doors blew open, carrying with them a rush of icy wind and the sharp, metallic scent of blood.

Callum, my Alpha, stepped in. His coat was stained with blood, his entire being humming with violence barely leashed beneath his skin.

But the moment his gaze fell on me, something shifted. The fury in his expression eased—replaced by a hunger that made the air between us crackle.

I walked to him, taking his heavy cloak from his shoulders and hanging it by the fire without a word.

"Shower or dinner?" I asked softly.

"Shower," he said, his voice rougher than usual, his eyes not leaving me this time.

I sat at the edge of the bathtub, reaching for the cloth to scrub his back.

Before I could even touch him, Callum turned, catching my wrist firmly yet gently, pulling me closer until I was standing between his knees.

His hands found my waist, sliding under the lace with possessive slowness.

He pressed his forehead against my stomach for a brief, startling moment—something so raw it made my throat tighten.

Then, without a word, he lifted me onto his lap, letting the bathwater soak my thighs. His mouth traced a searing line along the skin just above the lace.

"You have no idea how good you feel against me," Callum murmured, his voice low and hoarse. "You make everything better, Evelyn."

The way he said my name made my heart stutter.

His wolf rumbled beneath his skin, desperate for me—for us.

And for once, I didn't feel like a contract.

I felt like a need. A craving.

He slid my ruined lace aside with deliberate care, not tearing it in a rage but peeling it away like a man unwrapping something precious.

When he finally claimed me against the cold tile wall, it was rough, yes—but not cruel.

It was as if he needed to bury himself so deep within me that he could forget everything else.

Afterward, Callum wrapped a towel around his waist and ruffled his damp hair, his gaze catching mine and lingering a second too long—something unreadable flickering in his golden eyes.

I handed him his pajamas. He didn't take them immediately, only brushed his fingers lightly against mine before letting them hang forgotten on the chair.

After it was over, Callum pulled away without a word, his touch gone cold—as if nothing had ever happened.

Then he sat down at the table, the scent of venison filling the room.

Callum Wolffang was my Alpha, my so-called "mate." However, our marriage was nothing more than just a signed contract.

I gave him everything: my time, my dreams, my heart. He accepted it all without hesitation.

For a long time, I let myself believe that meant we loved each other.

Callum ate distractedly as he stared at his phone screen.

I could see a hint of joy in his eyes as a light smile gradually appeared on his lips—something I'd never seen before.

I walked past him and unexpectedly caught sight of the name on his phone screen—Iris Howley.

I was stunned. However, I simply calmly averted my gaze and went into the kitchen.

Suddenly, my phone began to ring.

I fished it out from my pocket and saw that it was Callum's mother, Kiera Beowulf.

As soon as I answered the call, I could hear Kiera's voice on the other end of the line. She asked, "Evelyn, are you truly going to sever the mate bond with Callum?"

I fixed my gaze on the window before me, where the moonflowers were blooming.

Then, I answered in an unusually calm voice, "Mrs. Wolffang, you know very well that I'm only with him because of that contract.

"The contract terms are ending soon, and his first love, Iris, has also renounced her mate. She's coming back to our territory soon, and Callum's beyond excited. He doesn't need me anymore."

Kiera heaved a long sigh. She sounded regretful as she said,

"It must have been hard on you for the past few years, since you had to stabilize that despotic wolf of his. I know he must have done some terrible things to you.

"I thought that he would start loving you after realizing all the things you did for him... Ah, well, whatever. Iris is coming back anyway, so I'm not worried anymore.

You gave up on your dreams to be a wolf doctor five years ago. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help."

I stared at the brightly blooming moonflower and spaced out for a brief moment.

Five years ago, I gave up a massive scholarship offer.

I also gave up my hobbies as I kept trying to please him any way I could, like a little lapdog.

It was time for me to move on.

I didn't hesitate when Kiera offered her help.

"Thank you very much. In that case, please arrange for me to leave as soon as possible."

The phone call ended.

The moonflower I'd been looking at suddenly fell off and floated to the ground lifelessly.

It felt like breaking free from a five-year prison sentence bound by my mate bond with Callum.

Evelyn's POV:I held a white lily in my hand as I walked into the funeral parlor. I caught sight of Lupinus' snow-white hair from the corner of my eyes. He looked as though he had aged by at least ten years as compared to my memories.Meanwhile, Callum sat in a wheelchair by the side, his eyes hollow and devoid of any shine. He looked like the shell of the werewolf he once was, but no longer remained. I simply couldn't associate his current figure with the proud and confident werewolf he used to be a long time ago.I went up to Kiera's casket and stopped before her photo. She was smiling kindly in her photo, with a hint of pride and accomplishment in her eyes, as if proud of herself for successfully playing the role of a generous and compassionate person.I lingered at her photo for a while as longtime memories began to hit me. Kiera had been the one who rescued me from the orphanage but later imprisoned me in a luxurious cage and destroyed five years of my youth. The conflicted

Callum's POV:I never thought that the silver dagger we once used as a bet would reappear in my hands once again. As soon as I held it in my hand, I was instantly drawn back to a memory from many, many years ago.It was a summer afternoon when we were all standing on the deck of the yacht looking out at sea. My friends and I were very excited and thought of looking for the silver dagger that had been lost at sea, according to the legends. We had agreed that whoever's female companion was willing to jump in to search for it would automatically win the bet and the prime land in Northville we all had our eyes on.It had actually been nothing more than just a stupid bet because we were fooling around. Nobody would have thought that it was real. Even I thought that nobody would be dumb enough to jump into the sea for it.However, Evelyn hadn't hesitated for long. After confirming that the bet was real, she had then jumped into the sea without further ado.I would remember that momen

Evelyn's POV:I didn't care about Callum's response at this point. I continued, "If it weren't for your mother's repayment contract, we would never even have met. I have my own life to live."Callum just stared at me in a daze. He looked bitter as he moved his lips to say something but stopped.Instead, he just quietly watched as I got out of his car and left.Just as I was about to walk into Raoul's house, suddenly, a pair of piercing headlights shone straight in my face. I immediately shielded my eyes from the blinding light. Then, I heard the loud screeching of wheels squealing against the asphalt, followed by Callum screaming my name."Evelyn!"Lily was the one behind the accident. She was completely overwhelmed and consumed by her resentment toward me, pinning all of the blame on me for what happened to her. She had broken free from the guards' restrictions at home and taken her car out to try and kill me.Unexpectedly, Callum dashed over to me and pushed me out of harm's

Evelyn's POV:Raoul helped me pack with a sad expression on his face."You've only been back for a month. Are you really going back now?"I stuffed the last of my folded shirts into my suitcase and said, "I have to leave."I had planned on staying for a longer period of time, but Callum already knew where the medical center was where I worked. Also, he wasn't the leader of the pack anymore, which meant he would have a lot of free time on his hands. And, I simply didn't have the time or energy to continue putting up with him.I also thought that it was high time Raoul found someone to be his mate. I couldn't always stay by his side because it wouldn't be appropriate otherwise.I zipped up my suitcase and brought it over to the door. Then, Raoul suddenly asked me, "Do you still remember Iris?"Iris? I froze. It had been a long time since I heard her name being brought up.In my memories, Iris had gone back to her ex-mate's territory and remarried. However, I didn't know what happ

Callum's POV:Father sat in the center of the study, shadows masking his face.I was standing before him, feeling tense all over, still hearing Lily's anguished cries from outside the study.Father lowered his head as he flipped through some documents. His silence made me feel even more suffocated."Callum, do you know how disappointed I am in you right now?"He finally spoke in a low yet bone-chilling voice. It felt like sharp claws slicing into my dignity."Father, I…" I wanted to speak up for myself, but I realized that I simply didn't know where or how to start.Father finally looked up, his gaze as sharp as a knife. "Look at everything you've done. You couldn't even handle two women by your side! You have destroyed the reputation of the Wolffang clan. Do you even know how the Alphas from the other clans are making fun of you?"I had to admit that I never managed to fulfill my duties as the Alpha of the pack ever since Father retired. I kept losing myself over Evelyn beca

Evelyn's POV:Hearing this, Callum's hand stopped mid-air. He turned around and looked at me and Raoul with a complicated look in his eyes.I looked at the mess before me and found it quite ironic. At that moment, the guests started pointing fingers and whispering among themselves. Lily's face turned even redder as she glared at me with pure hatred. She gritted her teeth and screamed at the top of her lungs, "It's all your fault, you filthy bitch!"She was so loud that I thought my ears would shatter."If it weren't for you, Cal would have never cut off my allowances and banished me to the borders to starve!"I chuckled coldly at her words."My fault?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. My voice turned icy as I continued, "Who was the one who kept looking down on me and made fun of me in the past? And who was the one who banished you to the borders?"You've got it all mixed up. How could you even blame me for that?"I then swirled the red wine in my glass and cast her anoth
