The council convened again at dawn, though no one dared call it order. Fear clung to the chamber like damp smoke. Whispers filled every shadow, names traded like curses. Elise entered last, her bandaged arm hidden beneath her sleeve, Kai and Mira at her sides.

She did not bow. She met their stares as if daring them to blink first.

Councilor Daren’s voice cracked through the silence. “This city bleeds, Lady Elise. And every wound seems to open where you stand.”

“Because I stand where the blade strikes,” Elise replied. Her voice was steady, iron against glass. “Do you want me to step aside? Then tell me who pulls the knives.”

No one answered. Not at first.

Then Becky rose. Graceful. Controlled. Poison wrapped in silk.

“Perhaps the knives are drawn because you provoke them,” she said softly. “Chaos follows you, Elise, as shadow follows flame.”

Elise turned to her. “Chaos doesn’t follow me. It follows you. And yesterday, all of us saw it.”

A ripple passed through the chamber. Some council

The square was an inferno. Fire licked across stalls, devouring canvas and wood, the heat warping the air into a furnace. Screams clawed through the night as the mob became a storm of panic and bloodlust—people trampling each other, torches crashing, shadows writhing in the smoke.Elise barely had breath left, every inhale a searing knife. Her arm was slick with blood, her side on fire where Becky’s blade had bitten. Yet her grip on the spear was iron. Her eyes never left Becky.Becky—cloaked in flame, face twisted into something almost inhuman. The smile that had always been too perfect was gone, burned away. What remained was raw, wild, a predator in the light of her own destruction.“You can’t stop it,” Becky’s voice shredded the air, half-laughter, half-scream. “They’re mine, Elise! Every soul here! Every stone of this city! Burn with me!”She lunged again, dagger a streak of fire in her hand. Elise caught it on her spearshaft, the crack of steel on wood splitting the night. The f

The mob pressed in like a living wall—sweaty faces twisted by rage, torchlight turning their eyes into molten fire. Elise could smell the smoke on their breath, the sour reek of fear and fury. The heat clawed at her skin, the roar of voices beating against her like waves. Still, she moved forward, one step after another, each stride defiance hammered into flesh and bone.Becky stood at the center, high on a cart, framed by fire like a queen of ruin. Her smile never wavered.“Elise!” Kai’s voice cracked through the noise, desperate, raw. He shoved and hacked his way through the crush of bodies, but they swarmed against him, an ocean pulling him back. Mira’s curses rose sharp through the clash of steel—her sword flashing like a stubborn beacon—but even she was being dragged under.A stone smashed against Elise’s shoulder. Pain tore through her, sharp and hot, but she didn’t slow. Another hit her ribs; she forced her face blank, refusing to give them her flinch. The mob roared louder, t

The chamber was colder than usual, though no window stood open. The councilors sat in restless silence, the echo of yesterday’s riot still hanging between them.Elise entered without ceremony, cloak sliding from her shoulders. She did not bow. She did not need to.“Lady Becky,” she said, her voice carrying in the still air, “you lit a fire in the market. It burned only your hands.”Becky rose slowly, every movement deliberate, her smile brittle but shining.“You mistake me for someone who fears smoke. The council saw chaos, Elise. That is enough. Chaos always demands control.”“Control,” Elise repeated, tilting her head. “Or chains?”A ripple passed through the councilors. Luka’s eyes narrowed from his post at Becky’s side, but he said nothing.“You speak boldly,” Becky countered. “But words do not save reputations. Proof does. And what proof do you offer, Elise? A broken man’s cry in a marketplace?”Elise stepped closer, parchment in hand. “Not one man. Six. All in custody. All namin

Council Wing – Early AfternoonThe corridors still rang with the echoes of raised voices. Servants pretended not to listen, but gossip was already running like wildfire. One name repeated more than any other: Luka.Becky shut the chamber doors behind them with more force than necessary. Her composure had not cracked in public, but here—where the walls were bare and the light fell without warmth—her mask thinned.“You should have destroyed that parchment,” she hissed.Luka’s easy smile returned, but his eyes were sharper than usual. “And leave us with nothing to bait her? No. The game required risk.”Her voice dropped to ice. “The council saw your handwriting.”“They saw what she wanted them to see,” Luka replied smoothly. “If Elise truly had all the proof, they would have called for censure already. Instead, they hesitate. That hesitation is ours to use.”Becky turned from him, jaw tight. She wanted to believe him. Needed to. But for the first time since they’d allied, doubt gnawed at

Outer Wall – TwilightThe cold bit deeper now, sliding under Elise’s tunic as the last of the daylight bled from the sky. She didn’t notice the chill—her focus was on the scrap of parchment in her palm. The words felt heavier than the paper itself. Our friend took the bait. Preparing to move her next piece into place. Her grip tightened until the edges cut into her skin. Not suspicion anymore. Proof. And that proof gave her something she’d been missing for days—clarity.“They’ve been choosing every turn we take,” she said quietly. “No more.”Rian’s voice was low. “You mean to hit back.”“I mean to make the next move so convincing they won’t realize it’s mine until it’s too late.”His mouth curved faintly. “Then you’ll need bait of your own.”“I already have it,” she said. “But for it to work, Kai will have to believe it’s real.”That gave him pause. “You trust him to play along?”“I trust him to recognize when the alternative is losing everything.”Kai’s Quarters – Late EveningThe ra
