Vincent woke up two days later.
The injuries on his head were heavy. Luckily, he was sent to the hospital on time. No severe sequelae was triggered. Still, the doctor requested him to have a really good rest.
Samuel and the old Beta took most of his work and asked him to stay in the hospital until he was fully recovered. Vincent didn’t argue with them. He just asked one question before Samuel and Harold left.
“How’s Talia?” he wanted to know.
Before he left the house, he had decided to end it with Talia, but he sort of changed his mind after he met that little girl at the fountain.
That little kid was apparently in a desperate need for her father. That was why she insisted on calling a random stranger “Daddy”.
Vincent felt that he couldn’t do it to Charlie. If the boy somehow spoke in the future and asked for his mom, what was he supposed to do by then? He couldn’t just grab a random woman from the street to be the boy’s mom. Pups are extremely sensitive about their parents.
He was kind of overwhelmed by the awkward situation between him and Talia right now. To his surprise, Talia solved the problem for him.
“She left,” Samuel shrugged his shoulders at Vincent’s bedside, “I am sorry, Vince. But Mrs. Mead called me yesterday. She found Talia emptied her room and took all her stuff away. I asked Tom. He told me Talia hopped on an airplane to Spain the night she hit you. I guess she doesn’t want to continue this relationship anymore either, just like you.” The college boy’s tone was indifferent, even cold.
Vincent fell into silence. He weirdly felt relieved, but also lost at the same time. He knew he must have scared Talia that night. At that very moment, he seriously wanted to kill that woman. But no matter what, Talia was still his mate. They were bound to each other by the sacred mate bond. Even if he wanted to end it, he couldn’t do it without a rejection.
“Find her for me, would you?” he asked Samuel, but actually didn’t know what he would do with Talia if she came back.
Samuel nodded his head and reminded Vincent to take a good rest, and then left with the old Beta.
Vincent stayed in the hospital bed for another two days. On the third day, his secretary, Sophia, came to visit him with a pile of documents that needed his signature.
Vincent signed all those papers, and asked Sophia from the hospital bed, “Anyone … particular called my office?”
He was thinking about that little girl who insisted on calling him Dad. He gave the little girl his office number to avoid unnecessary misunderstanding. If the little girl called, it would be Sophia to take the phone call. But Sophia shook her head.
“No, Sir,” the young secretary was sitting straight on a single sofa at the corner of the ward. She looked a bit confused, but replied very quickly and professionally, “They were all regular business phone calls. Your brother had taken care of them.”
Vincent nodded his head quietly. Somehow, he felt disappointed to hear that answer. He knew he should feel lucky that the little girl’s mom didn’t show up with a police officer to issue him a restraining order, but he couldn’t control how he felt.
Lying on the hospital bed gave him a lot of time to think. During the past few days, he had tried to think about his work, Charlie, even Talia. But that little girl just kept jumping into his head.
He could never forget the way she looked at him and asked when she could see him again. And he could never forget how happy she was when she heard him saying “Daddy loves you too”.
Vincent knew he was acting like a pretty sick per/vert. But he seriously wanted that girl to be happy. He wished she could find her real dad, and he wished she could get all the love she deserved.
He thought for a while, and then told Sophia, “If a little girl named Angela calls and asks for her dad, transfer the call to my personal cell.”
It was a request with explosive information. Sophia almost thought she had heard it wrong. She couldn’t help but widen her eyes and ask, “You mean….” She stuttered as she didn’t know how to ask that shocking but improper question.
Vincent knew Sophia had just misunderstood from her facial expression. He felt regretful and quickly explained, “She is not my daughter. Charlie is my only child. She’s the daughter of…a friend of mine.”
Sophia quickly nodded her head and said, “I know! I know!”, but her dodging eyes told Vincent that she didn’t believe him.
It was the sort of thing that explanation only makes it worse. Vincent suddenly felt a headache. He pinched the bridge of his nose and then told Sophia, “You can leave now”, and then added, “Keep it secret from Samuel, will you?”
Sophia quickly nodded her head again. “Sure, of course!” She said with panic in her head.
She wasn’t a wolf, and knew nothing about the personal affairs going on in the Lanton family. In her eyes, Vincent wasn’t an easy-going boss and his alleged wife was a stark bitch. That woman could trash Vincent’s meeting room for being late for a dinner appointment. Sophia couldn’t even imagine what would happen if Talia found out Vincent had a secret child with another woman.
She quickly picked up her briefcase and walked out of the ward, with some of those documents still in her hand. Her handsome, but bad-tempered, and also henpecked young boss suddenly had a secret daughter and needed her to cover it was way too overwhelming. Sophia wasn’t really looking when she walked past the nurse station a few yards away from Vincent’s ward.
A thin blonde woman in a brown trench coat had just ended her consultation there and turned at the same time. They accidentally bumped into each other.
Vincent saw it through the open door of his ward. When that woman turned facing Sophia, he surprisingly found that it was the green-eyed woman he had seen at the fountain that day.
He instantly felt his **** grow hard again as if he had just got a dose of powerful philter. It made him feel like the sickest per/vert on earth.
What the hell was wrong with him? It’s just not okay to get hard on a strange woman whenever he sees her!
Vincent had no idea why he did that. It was the first day he came back to work. He didn’t want anyone to know, so he took a taxi and showed up at noon. Meeting Lena was purely accidental. He had never expected to see this mysterious green-eyed woman again. During the past few days, he didn’t even allow himself to think about her. He was now this crappy sl/ash crazy man who had just scared his own “wife” away from home and had just insanely “adopted” an illegal daughter. Lucky for him, Charlie started to communicate with him recently under Angela’s influence. It just felt wrong to think about another woman at such a moment. What sort of man does that anyway? Not only wolves, even humans aren’t allowed to chase their partners away by threatening to kill them, and then start being happy with another woman. No matter what, Talia was still his mate. It made Vincent feel guilty even thinking of the fountain he saw Lena for the first time. Not to mention the insane pleasure and
Lena used all her strength to pretend casual and listened quietly. Sophia then shrugged her shoulders, and said, “Not that my boss is any better than his wife. He is … unique too. Last winter, I overheard his brother urge him to send the boy, Charlie, I think, to some doctor in LA. Apparently, the boy had some problems. I heard Samuel say he hadn’t spoken one word since he was born…”Lena felt someone had just ripped open her throat. She couldn’t feel her breath anymore, and her head went dizzy, even Sophia’s voice became distant. She felt she was about to faint or explode, but she didn’t. Because she knew she had to stick here to listen to what they had done to her poor child.Sophia didn’t notice that. She was too excited about the gossip she was about to share. Lena started to pinch her thighs under the table to keep herself from storming out or screaming, cursing those two flagitious bastards who stole her child. And she heard Sophia saying:“But guess what? My boss refused,” the
Lena’s sleep had gotten better recently. The day Angela came back from the park, she brought a toy teddy bear with her, and then handed it to Lena. “It’s a gift from Lucas, Mommy. Lia hasn’t grown strong enough. The bear will protect you in the replacement of her,” the little girl said with seriousness in her beautiful green eyes. Lena took the bear and said “Thanks” to her little angel. Lia was the name of Angela’s toy wolf. Lena always felt a bit odd that Angela named the wolf a girl’s name. At night, Lena placed the bear on the nightstand before she went to sleep. Normally, she wouldn’t take gifts from strangers into her bedroom, but that bear gave her a different feeling. Maybe because it came from a boy who had the same name as her son. Whenever Lena saw that bear, she felt it was incredibly endearing. That night Lena magically didn’t have any nightmares and had a really good rest. She got up early the next day to send Angela to her new kindergarten, and then went t
Outside the park near Lena’s apartment, Vincent had just stopped the car in the parking lot. It wasn’t a pleasant drive considering there was a weird boy who refused to speak, sitting in the backseat. Surely, it saved Vincent’s trouble of trying awkward conversations. Still, Vincent felt uncomfortable being under the same roof with his son, who was practically a stranger to him. He held his breath the whole time, and finally felt relieved a little when the park popped into his anxious eyes. After parking the car, he got off first and then walked around to the backseat to open the door for Charlie. The boy had been sitting there quietly all the time, holding that small teddy bear in between his hands. After Vincent pulled open the door, he raised his head and stared at his father’s face. It somehow made Vincent feel restless again. He cleared his throat with a cough and then said, “Get out.” His voice was harsh, even rude due to his nervousness. The boy didn’t get scared.
Lena felt really guilty for scaring her little daughter. On the same night of that afternoon where she repeated that nightmare about Talia and Vincent, right after she tucked Angela in as always, the little girl suddenly said “Wait, Mommy!” and then passed Lena her favorite toy wolf. “It will protect you in bad dreams,” the little girl said with innocent assurance sparkling in her beautiful green eyes. Lena smiled, but actually felt like crying. She took the toy wolf and said “Thank you, sweetheart”, and then kissed the little girl’s forehead, whispered “Good night” before she went out of the bedroom and closed the door. Outside, the living room was kind of dark, and lonely under the dim orange light from the floor lamp beside the sofa. Lena turned off the lamp first, and then went back to her own bedroom with that toy wolf in her hand. She kissed the toy wolf and put it beside her pillow before she went to sleep. It kind of worked. Lena had some real rest that night. Sh
It was a good day. The weather was sunny, and the wind was soft, very suitable for an outing. When Vincent reached the house, the first thing he saw was Charlie standing on the lawn in front of the house, playing catch ball with Kelly. The boy saw him at the same time. He instantly froze and dropped the ball while the car was still approaching. Kelly noticed it. She turned her head and then saw Vincent too. She then quickly walked to Charlie and held the little boy’s hand. She knew the boy was kind of afraid of his father.Vincent noticed Charlie’s motion from inside the car. A burning torrent of guilt flashed across his heart, but was soon replaced by the nervousness of speaking to the boy.He stopped the car on the road beside the lawn, and then got off with the teddy bear.Kelly gave him a big grin when she saw the young master of this strange family for the second time.“Hello, Mr. Lanton,” she said with her distinguishing, cheerful, light voice, “Today is a very nice day!”Vincen
