The house looked smaller than Ivy remembered, the way childhood places always do once you've spent a week living somewhere with a wall around it and a name for every tree.

Kade parked at the curb instead of the driveway, out of habit or caution, Ivy couldn't tell which.

"You don't have to come in," she said. "I know this isn't really your world. Peeling paint and a porch step that's been broken since I was twelve."

"I want to come in." He looked at the house, then at her, something unreadable moving behind his eyes. "This is where you grew up. I'd like to see it, if you'll let me."

She let him.

The attic hadn't been touched in years, dust thick enough to leave footprints, boxes stacked in the same careless order Margaret must have left them in whenever she'd last had the strength to come up here. It took twenty minutes of searching before Ivy found the one marked, in her mother's careful handwriting, simply: MOM.

She carried it down to the kitchen table, hands unsteady, and opened it there instead of in the attic, needing better light and, if she was honest, needing to not be alone in that small dark space when she found out what was inside.

Letters, just like Margaret said. A dozen of them, folded soft with age, written in a script Ivy didn't recognize at all — not quite any human alphabet she'd ever seen, elegant and angular at once.

And underneath the letters, wrapped in cloth gone yellow with time, a pendant.

Kade went very still the second she lifted it out.

"What is it?"

"May I?" He held out his hand, careful, and she passed it to him. He turned it over slowly, thumb tracing a symbol etched into the metal — a crescent moon wrapped around something that looked almost like a tree, roots and branches both. "This isn't Voss territory markings. I've never seen this exact symbol before, but I recognize the shape of it. It's a pack sigil. An old one."

"Not yours."

"No. Which means your grandmother wasn't cast out of my pack's lineage at all." He looked up at her, and something in his face had shifted, sharper now, more careful. "This changes things, Ivy. If she came from an entirely separate pack, one that isn't part of our succession law at all, Damon's whole legitimacy argument might not even apply the way he thinks it does. He's been building his case assuming your bloodline runs through us somewhere. If it doesn't—"

"Then his whole argument falls apart."

"Maybe." Kade set the pendant down carefully on the letters, like it might break. "We need someone who can actually read this script. I don't recognize it, and neither will most of the pack. It's old enough that even our own historians might not place it right away."

"Do you know anyone who could?"

"One person." He didn't look thrilled about the answer. "An old pack historian who left the compound years ago after a disagreement with my father. Lives about forty minutes from here. She won't be happy to see me. She might talk to you, though. New faces tend to get more patience than old grudges."

Ivy was already gathering the letters back into the box. "Then let's go."

They were halfway to the car when Ivy noticed it — the back door standing open, just slightly, that she was certain, absolutely certain, she'd shut and locked behind them on the way up to the attic.

Kade noticed the same second she did. His whole posture changed, shoulders dropping into something coiled and ready that she hadn't seen since the clearing.

"Get in the car," he said, low. "Now."

"Kade—"

"Now, Ivy." He didn't raise his voice, but something underneath it left no room for arguing. "Lock the doors. If anything happens, you drive. Don't wait for me."

She got in the car, box clutched against her chest, and watched through the windshield as Kade moved toward the house slow and careful, every line of him gone dangerous in a way she'd never seen outside a full moon clearing.

He was almost to the door when a figure stepped out of the shadow along the side of the house — not Damon, not anyone Ivy recognized at all, a stranger in dark clothes who froze for exactly one second before bolting for the fence line at the back of the yard.

Kade went after him instantly, fast, faster than a man should be able to move, and disappeared around the side of the house in a blur that left Ivy alone in the car with her heart slamming against her ribs and a box of sixty-year-old secrets sitting in her lap like it had just gotten a great deal heavier.

The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c

Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in

Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular

Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm

The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o

Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
