Chapter 20

The hall emptied out slowly, council members lingering in small clusters, voices low, the whole room still humming with everything that had just happened. Ivy stood rooted near the front row, Odalys's words still settling into her chest like something too large to fit comfortably.

"You okay?" Kade asked quietly, close enough that only she could hear him.

"I don't know yet. Ask me tomorrow." She managed a tired half-smile. "I went from coffee shop to Ashgrove royalty in about three weeks. Give me a minute to catch up."

"Take all the minutes you need." He didn't let go of her hand.

Odalys approached before they could leave, Mara trailing a step behind her, and inclined her head toward Ivy with something that looked almost like warmth now, the ice from earlier fully melted away.

"I'll return," Odalys said. "Not today. There's much to discuss between our people, and it shouldn't happen rushed, in a hallway, after a day like this one. But you should know — whatever happens from here, Ashgrove stands behind that child. And behind you, if you'll let us."

"Thank you," Ivy said, and meant it more than she'd expected to.

Odalys studied her a moment longer, then glanced past her toward the doors Damon had walked out of minutes before, expression sharpening.

"Watch him," she said, quiet, just for Ivy and Kade. "A man like that doesn't withdraw a motion because he's given up. He withdraws it because he's already planning the next one."

She wasn't wrong.

They found Damon waiting in the courtyard outside, alone, composed, like a man who'd had time to rebuild whatever had cracked in that hall.

"Cousin," he said, as they approached. "Quite a hearing."

"Say what you came to say, Damon."

"Fair enough." Damon's easy smile was back in full, sharper now, edged with something Ivy hadn't seen from him before. "The council may not find your surrogate's bloodline disqualifying anymore. That's fine. I'll accept the ruling — I'm not a man who fights battles I've already lost. But legitimacy was never the only lever available to me, Kade. You know that better than anyone."

Kade's whole body went still beside her.

"Don't."

"I invoke Challenge Right," Damon said, formal now, voice carrying easily across the empty courtyard, loud enough that a few pack members lingering near the doors turned to listen. "Combat for the alpha seat. Old law, clean law, the kind even Odalys's people would recognize as legitimate. No legal arguments needed. No bloodlines to dispute. Just strength, decided the way it's always been decided, in front of the whole pack."

"You'd risk everything on a fight you might lose."

"I'd risk everything," Damon said, "because I think you've gotten soft, Kade. Distracted. A man protecting a mate and an unborn heir doesn't fight the way a man with nothing to lose fights. I like my odds a great deal better today than I did a week ago."

Ivy felt her stomach drop straight through the courtyard stones.

"When," Kade said. Not if. When.

"Three days. Under the full moon, same as everything else this month, apparently." Damon's smile widened, thin and sharp. "Fitting, don't you think? Everything about your claim to this pack decided under moonlight. Let's see if the moon favors you twice in one month."

He turned and walked away without waiting for a response, unhurried, certain, the same way he'd walked into every room since Ivy had arrived at this compound.

Kade stood frozen for a long moment, staring after him, and Ivy watched something shift behind his eyes — not fear, exactly, but the weight of a decision that had just been made for him whether he wanted it or not.

"You can refuse," Ivy said. "Can't you? Just say no?"

"Refusing a formal challenge means forfeiting the seat without a fight." Kade's voice was low, controlled, the same voice he used when he was holding something back by force. "I'd lose everything Damon's trying to take, and I'd lose it without even the chance to keep it."

"Then you fight him."

"Then I fight him," Kade agreed, and turned to look at her fully, something fierce and frightened both moving behind his amber eyes at once. "In three days. With everything on the line, exactly the way he wants it."

Behind them, Odalys's voice carried quietly through the courtyard, though Ivy hadn't heard her approach.

"Then you have three days to remember," the old woman said, "that strength was never the only thing that's ever won a fight like this one."
