INICIAR SESIÓNThey left the hospital at six in the morning once Margaret was moved to a room and the doctor promised she'd sleep through most of the day anyway. Ivy hugged her mother goodbye promised to call and didn't tell her any part of the truth waiting back at the compound.
The drive back was quiet. Kades knuckles were pale on the wheel the way.
"Tell me what I'm walking into " Ivy said, past the halfway point.
"A council meeting. Pack elders, members, anyone with a formal voice in succession matters." Kade didn't look away from the road. "Damon will have spent the night building his case. That I left during a bonding window. That I can't be trusted to put the pack "
"Is that true? That you can't leave during a bonding window?"
"Its never come up before. There's no rule against it. Which means Damon gets to define what the rule should have been after the fact in front of people who're scared enough to listen to him." His jaw worked. "I need you to let me do the talking in there. Can you do that?"
"I can try."
"That's not really a yes."
"It's the one you're getting today " Ivy said and something in Kades face almost almost smiled.
The great hall was already full when they walked in. Twenty, thirty people, standing in a loose circle around a raised stone floor that looked older than the house itself. Damon stood at the center calm, composed like he'd been expecting this entrance and had already planned three responses to it.
Elena stood near the front arms crossed, face unreadable.
"Kade." Damons voice carried easily across the hall. "Glad you made it back. We were starting to worry."
"You called an emergency council without me. During a bonding window. On what grounds."
"On the grounds that an alpha who disappears during the critical four days of the succession year raises questions." Damon spread his hands, reasonable always so reasonable. "I'm not accusing you of anything, cousin. I'm asking the question everyone in this room is asking. Where were you and why did it matter more than pack business?"
Kades hand found Ivys, steady, grounding. "My surrogates mother had an emergency. I drove her to the hospital myself. Stayed until she was stable. If thats a crime now you'll have to write it into the charter yourself because it isn't one yet."
A murmur moved through the crowd. Not hostile, exactly. Uncertain.
"A generous gesture " Damon said. "Toward a woman who's n't pack on a night the whole territory needed its alpha present. I wonder what else might take priority over this packs future going forward."
"Say what you're actually trying to say, Damon."
"I'm saying " Damon said, voice dropping, sharpening, "that some of us are starting to wonder whether this surrogate arrangement is really about securing an heir all or whether its become something else. Something thats already compromising your judgment."
The hall went very quiet.
Ivy felt every eye in the room shift toward her weighing, measuring. She understood, with a cold drop in her stomach exactly what Damon was doing. Not attacking the pregnancy. Attacking the reason behind it. Making Kade look like a man who'd lost control of himself over a woman of a leader securing his packs future.
"Shes carrying my heir " Kade said, flat final. "Confirmed as of this week. Thats not compromised judgment Damon. That's the point of this arrangement succeeding faster than anyone expected."
The murmur turned into something. Elenas arms uncrossed slowly her face doing something complicated that Ivy couldn't read from across the hall.
Damons easy smile didn't waver,. Something behind his eyes went very still.
"Confirmed " he repeated. "How fast "
"Fast enough " Kade said, "that it's none of your business how only that its done."
"One pairing." Damon said it slowly like he was working out a math problem in front of the hall and Ivy watched the exact moment he landed on the answer he wanted. "One. Already confirmed. Cousin. Do you have any idea how that actually is?"
Nobody answered him. Nobody needed to. Ivy could see it moving through the room already whispered from person to person the shape of question Rhys had almost asked at breakfast three days ago.
"There's one reason a bond takes that fast " Damon said, turning slowly to address the whole hall now voice carrying, performing. "I think everyone here already knows what it is. I think the only person who hasn't said it loud yet is standing right next to her."
Kades hand tightened around Ivys.
"Don't " he said, quiet, low meant for Damon.
"Fated mate " Damon said loud enough for every single person, in the hall to hear. "Isn't that right, cousin? You didn't hire a surrogate all. You found your mate. You've been letting the entire pack believe it was a business arrangement ever since."
The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c
Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in
Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular
Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm
The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o
Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
