Mary Ann’s POV

I woke with Modric’s hand wrapped around mine.

For several seconds, I could not move.

The nightmare still clung to me. The academy dining hall. The laughter. The dark green cloak. The feeling of falling while Modric stood above me and watched.

Then the dream faded, and I became aware of the room around us.

The low fire.

The heavy curtains.

The unfamiliar bed inside my childhood room.

And Modric kneeling beside me.

His fingers held mine firmly, his thumb resting near my pulse as t

Mary Ann’s POVI had not meant to follow him. After leaving the command center, I returned to the room long enough to collect the healing records my mother wanted me to review. Modric had disappeared before I came back downstairs, and one of the guards mentioned that he had walked toward the southern gardens.I told myself I needed air. That was all.The command room had felt too warm after hours of reports, coded symbols, and questions without answers. The initials V.R. remained in my mind, along with the strange hesitation in Modric’s face when he saw them.I followed the garden path without thinking about where it led. Then I heard his voice.Low.Controlled.Private.I stopped before the stone bridge, hidden partly by flowering bushes and the shadow of a tall tree. Modric stood farther along the path with his back toward me, one hand holding his phone to his ear.I should have turned around. His private life was not my concern. He had said so clearly. But before I could move, his

Modric’s POVThe letters V.R. remained in my thoughts long after we left the command center. They should not have meant anything. Two initials on a coded message could belong to anyone. A merchant. A rogue commander. A place hidden beyond the neutral territories.Yet the moment I saw them, Velvera’s name entered my mind.Velvera Raines.I had never asked whether she still used her father’s family name in private documents. Most people knew her only as Velvera. Her family had lost influence years ago, and she rarely spoke about them unless it helped explain why she deserved a place beside me.Still, the possibility had entered my mind.I hated myself for allowing it.Velvera could be jealous. Demanding. Cruel when Mary Ann’s name appeared between us. But she was not capable of organizing poisonings, murders, and rogue attacks. At least, I did not want to believe she was.I spent another hour reviewing the coded message with Marek. The symbols surrounding V.R. referred to supplies, move

Mary Ann’s POVThe witness’s words followed us back to Mooncrest. The marriage must end.By the time we returned to the central pack house, both councils had already gathered in the main chamber. Mooncrest elders occupied one side of the long table, while the Ironclaw representatives who travelled with us sat on the other. The division was immediate and obvious. Silver and blue on one side. Black and gray on the other. No one trusted anyone. That was exactly what our enemy wanted. My father stood near the head of the table, speaking quietly with Modric. Both men wore the same hard expression, though tension remained between them. Alpha Sterling had not forgotten that his daughter had nearly died under Ironclaw protection. Modric had not forgotten that Mooncrest evidence had been found at the burned settlement.I entered with Marek carrying the recovered items behind me.Conversation stopped.Elder Darius of Mooncrest rose first.“Is the witness certain?”“He was weak,” I said. “But he

Modric’s POVMary Ann’s wedding ring was still on the bedside table when I left the room.I stood there longer than I should have, staring at the silver band beside the place where I had held her hand during the night. The first time she removed it, she placed it in my palm and told me to keep it until I remembered what marriage was supposed to mean. This time, she had forgotten it again. At least, I believed she had forgotten. That did not stop the same cold fear from moving through me.I picked up the ring and closed my fingers around it. Part of me wanted to follow her downstairs and place it back on her hand. Another part knew I had no right to force a symbol on her when I continued betraying everything it represented.I placed the ring inside my coat pocket. Then I followed Mary Ann and her father toward the burned settlement. The damaged building stood near Mooncrest’s northern border, close enough to Ironclaw territory that traders from both packs used it as a storage point. Be

His hair was untidy from sleep, and his shirt had twisted slightly across his shoulders. He looked nothing like the controlled Alpha who sat at council tables and ordered entire rooms into silence. He looked frightened. The concern in his eyes was so open that it stunned me.“Modric?”His expression changed immediately. The softness disappeared beneath a guarded frown.“You were making noise.”I blinked.“What?”“You were restless.”His hand remained around min

Mary Ann’s POVMy mother’s question struck harder than I expected.“Is there another woman?”For several seconds, I could not speak. The healing garden remained quiet around us. Water moved through the narrow stone channels, and a light breeze touched the white flowers climbing the wall. Everything looked peaceful, but my chest had tightened so sharply that breathing felt difficult.I turned away from my mother.“No.”The answer came too quickly. She noticed.Luna Sterling had spent my entire life recognizing every lie before I finished speaking. As a child, I could not hide stolen pastries, unfinished lessons, or secret tears from her. Becoming Luna had taught me how to control my expression before elders and strangers. It had not taught me how to deceive my mother. She stepped closer.“Mary Ann.”“There is no other woman.”“You did not look at me when you said that.”“I am looking at the plants.”“The plants did not ask you a question.”I closed my eyes briefly. My mother reached fo
