5. Walk Next To Me

The alpha entered the building and I followed him timidly.

I had no idea where he was going. Again, thanks to his long strides, it was hard to follow him. Admittedly, the fault laid in my own short legs – I was rather small for a werewolf.

Nobody at the building dared to stop him. On the contrary, many greeted him with utmost politeness.

He suddenly stopped in his tracks and I bumped into his back.

His scent was heavenly, and his muscles spoke louder than any words could of the training he must go through every day. I was in a little bit of a daze when he turned around, a smirk playing on his lips.

“Are you okay, Jade?” He patted my head, like one would a child.

“I wasn’t paying attention. I’m sorry,” was my quick response.

“How about you walk by my side instead?” He offered in a soft tone of voice.

I gasped in shock and surprise. “I could never…”

“Why not?” His frown was almost imperceptible but it was there nonetheless.

“For starters, you’re you and I’m me,” I said timidly, wishing he’d drop the subject, feeling the many stares we were attracting.

“Nonsense,” he waved off my objection like it was nothing.

“Besides, I can’t keep up,” I blurted out, a blush creeping under my skin.

“You should have said so from the beginning,” he let out in soft admonishment. “Walk next to me.”

This time around, it wasn’t worded out as a suggestion but as an order – an order which I had no wish to disobey.

“Yes, al… Alex.”

He grabbed me by the shoulder and ushered me forward, leading me. Once again, I was under the spotlight – for different reasons this time around, mind you – and many women regarded me with something akin to loathing and jealousy.

I could only guess he didn’t allow many to walk by his side. It made me feel special, unique, and maybe a little bit too excited.

“You’re projecting your excitement a little bit too much. What pray tell is the cause for such joy?” He asked, just as we got into the elevator.

I shot him a sullen look. Couldn’t he have spared me? I was but a teenager. A teenager whose hormones were playing a dirty trick on her.

I pouted and looked ahead. My reflection in the mirror of the elevator confirmed my suspicions. I had a shit-eating grin, and the stars in my brown eyes gave me away for sure.

I remained silent, and he thankfully didn’t press the matter further.

A smartly dressed woman came forward the moment we stepped out of the elevator.

She was completely focused on the alpha, and she began to tell him about what needed to be done, what awaited him, the unforeseen changes in his schedule, all while he walked ahead towards an office.

Not only was Alexander Bad a powerful alpha but also a businessman from the looks of it.

And then, once she finished her speech, almost as if noticing me for the first time, she asked in a soft tone that held faint traces of curiosity, “A friend of yours, Mr. Bad?”

“Yes,” was his curt answer.

I would never even dream of calling the alpha my friend, no matter how considerate he was of me. But he couldn’t possibly tell a human I was a pack member.

“Should I bring you something to drink?” She offered in a kind tone.

I was about to decline, refusing to be a nuisance, when my stomach growled loudly. I blushed profusely at that.

“Do you love Chinese food, Jade?” He asked me suddenly.

“I don’t hate it,” I shrugged. “I am not a picky eater.”

“Well then, get me the usual, Camille,” he deadpanned. “The same for Jade.”

“Yes, sir,” she nodded, and then left just as he settled into the desk of the office he occupied.

I stood in the center of the office, not knowing what to do, admiring every little detail of my surroundings, from the artistic painting adorning the wall, to a family picture.

Everything screamed luxury, and I reasoned the couch alone cost more than our car did. I was reluctant to sit or touch anything.

“How about you get comfortable?” He suggested, his eyes twinkling with something akin to mischief.

“Alpha,” I began sheepishly as I sat cautiously on the sofa.

“Alexander,” he cut in, correcting me.

“Alex,” I smiled despite my state of unease. “I am no straight-A student but I don’t make a habit of skipping school.”

“It’s okay,” he waved my worries off. “If it’s the school you’re worried about, they saw you leave with me. If it’s your parents’ reaction you’re afraid of, I shall talk to them about it.”

I breathed out an okay at that and got more comfortable on the sofa.

I had no clue as to why he had taken me away from the school. I could handle myself against a dumb bully or two… but then again, that would later make me a target. And I had close to no wish to go through that kind of dull life again.

People might not bully a person openly but they might choose to distance themselves, and that alone was a form of bullying in my book.

I was easy-going by nature, and becoming the outcast had hurt me deeply.

I promised myself that this time around, it would be different. I shall not let my parents’ sacrifice be in vain. I’ll prove my worth to the pack and do my best to be at least respected, if not loved, by my peers.

Being different didn’t make me any less my parents’ daughter. They were elite warriors, and I had trained under them for years. I knew I could stand my ground against almost any opponent in human form. Nevertheless, this was a new pack, with different traditions, if the alpha’s attitude was anything to go by.

He worked diligently on the stack of papers that needed his attention, and I watched him with a small fond smile.

I just hoped my raging hormones wouldn’t embarrass me, and that my stupid crush on the man would be just that – a crush.

You don’t stand a chance, Jade, I told myself. Do not be foolish enough to fall for your alpha.

Jade's pov:I watched Tyler train under Alex’s guidance, a soft fond smile on my face. To the side, a heavily pregnant Paulina trained Anna. My best friend refused to allow me to train the little one, claiming I wasn’t meant to teach, too gentle, too caring for that. Funny considering I was a fierce witch. The irony wasn’t lost on me. Admittedly as a hybrid, there was much to work on. Healing people was what I preferred, though I still didn’t care to stop when it was needed of me at times. Thankfully, I hadn’t had much healing to do over the past few years. Peace had come back to our lands, and our pack was prosperous and more than strong enough to fight off rogues. The Stevens, Jessica’s family ended up leaving of their own accord. Admittedly, they hadn’t brought issues to the pack, only their daughter did. But they missed her, and seeing as she was another pack’s problem, we saw no reason to hold them back. Paulina poked Anna’s forehead non too gently, and the latter let out an

Jade’s pov: I was wearing dangerously high heels, a risque silver dress, a jacket covering my bare back, and a hairpin on my wavy hair. Not any hairpin, the one he offered me on my last birthday – the first one we celebrated together. Surprisingly, Alex took us to the very same spot as the previous year. It was as beautiful as ever. There were rose petals leading up to the gazebo where we settled, and soon he was bringing over meals. The smell that reached me had my mouth watering, and it was everything I could do not to drool. I hadn’t had the time to have an afternoon snack. The fish soup was absolutely divine, and heavens knew that I wasn’t big on soups to begin with. The conversation flowed between us easily, like two lovers getting together after a long time. After the soup, came the paella. It was as good as I would have hoped for, and I found myself moaning often. “You seem to be enjoying yourself, love,” he drawled after a beat, his lips curving into a small smile. “Ju

Alex’s pov:Watching my beautiful come into her powers, and also her role as the pack’s Luna, was bliss on earth. She was a wonderful mother, an excellent strategist, and a great asset to the pack.Though the threats had all been dealt with, she never failed to train, as a wolf in the morning, and as a witch in the afternoon, under Paulina’s guidance. Some pups had gotten used to watching her train, from a safe distance as per her instructions, and it felt like she was no longer the awkward teenager who had landed on my doorsteps a year ago.Luc coughed, trying not so discreetly to get my attention.“What now?” I growled at him, and had to physically tear my gaze away from my beloved mate.“I know the Luna has you wrapped around her little finger, but please don’t make it so obvious,” he chuckled, not caring about status or anything at that moment – acting like the best friend he was.“I love that woman, and I would happily die for her,” I deadpanned, raising an eyebrow at him, challe

Jade’s pov: We were back in our wing, and I had just put Tyler to sleep in his crib, when I caught sight of Alex in a towel. He had just left the shower after a long day – might very well be the longest day he had ever had. I watched the way he sat down, his shoulders slightly hunched, not breathing a word. I could feel the grief rolling off him in waves though he refused to show it. It wasn’t long before I got behind him and hugged him for dear life. “I am so sorry, Alex,” I let out softly. He inhaled deeply, as if he just refused to let it out, and then said simply, “Thanks, love.” “No, you don’t understand, Alex,” I replied, shaking my head as tears gathered in my eyes. “I truly am sorry for what happened. It’s all because of me. We lost and had to bury so many people because of me. I…” I trailed off, not knowing what else to say. I didn’t know what could better convey how sorry I was that he had to lose his mother because of me. With my wet cheek against his back, I simply s

Jade’s pov: Lady Sapphira’s funeral brought the pack together once more. It also brought people from all over the US. Many pack officials came, to pay their respect to the former Luna of the Moonlight pack, but also to see how well the hybrid, that I was, behaved. Only I was so much more than just a hybrid. I wasn’t just a werewolf who could also use witchcraft. I was a mate, a Luna, a mom. There wasn’t much they could do or say to upset me anymore. I had come to accept who I was. Heavens, the prophecy itself, which admittedly had brought in a lot of pain and stress to my loved ones, wasn’t exactly something I feared. I had Paulina reach out to her family and ask about it. All in all, the prophecy described this hybrid – me – as someone with unparalleled power, great control, and no willingness to compromise when it came to her loved ones. I was all that and more. It was just really unfortunate and oh so saddening that people had to die because of that. Because the damned Alpha

Alex’s pov: Mom was no more. I could feel it. And I couldn’t act up on my grief, for we were in the middle of the battlefield. What had happened for heavens’ sake? She was a strong and fierce warrior – not one to be messed with, not one to lose easily. “Stay strong, son,” my dad’s voice reached me via mind-link. “We can overcome this together… Later. Now, we need to fight. For your mate. For your pup. For the pack.” “Yes, dad!” As usual, my mate didn’t fail to surprise me. Right when I thought she might bargain with her life or something, her eyes filled with tears and determination as she called the Alpha King despicable. But then again, my father’s pained howl could only mean he had explained to her what had happened. Then, she began to chant some spell, her eyes locked on the Alpha King. And we all sensed a shift in the air. A powerful aura. A dangerous force. Paulina looked at her with wide eyes, as if she couldn’t believe what she was doing herself. I had to trust my sw
