Any misgivings I’d had about Austin slowly melted away as he gave me a tour of the house, apologising profusely for the piles of dirty laundry and stacks of dishes by the sink. It was all so ordinary; painfully dull, in fact. The décor was strictly neutral colours, a nauseating collage of beige, greys and browns fading into one. This was absolutely a single man’s home. There was no sign of any other occupants in the three guest bedrooms, and judging by the mess and distinct lack of style in the house there was certainly no woman around. I can’t breathe. This is it. The first lash cut through me like a blade. I bit my tongue to supress a scream, clamping down so hard that hot blood pooled in my mouth. “Not hard enough? It was all over in a matter of seconds. Austin was pulled away from me with the force of a hurricane and no sooner had I seen his eyes widen in fear, they were looking up at from the floor, torn from his skull. An unearthly scream echoed throughout the basement before a squelching, tearing sound silenced it forever. I felt something warm splash my legs and tried to blink through my dehydrated fog to see it; I could have laughed from the sheer justice of it, but I was too badly injured. After a hot shower I made my way downstairs, following the scent of bacon and coffee to a grand marble open plan kitchen where Cole waited for me. “Mornin”, he said cheerfully. “Morning-how long was I asleep?”, I asked, not certain I wanted an answer. “Only ‘bout 14 hours or so.
