VELDANA'S POV

The door to Ward creaked open as I slid back inside. The sharp sting of the new antiseptic spray hit my nose, and I tried to scrunch them to avoid Leila seeing how swollen my eyes had become.

The burden of the hospital bill and the cost of the surgery that I didn't have sat stubbornly in my chest

Sniffing softly, I rolled my jacket sleeves as I went to sit beside Leila. Hoping she won't notice the redness in my face.

“Mom, are you okay?” Leila's voice, small but sharp, went through my thoughts. She slowly sat up in the bed, her stuffed bunny, which Frey bought for her, clutched tightly in her tiny arms.

Her curls spilled over the pillow, and her amber eyes, so much like mine, searched my face, with that worry she was too young to carry.

“Your eyes look swollen.” She mumbled meekly as a pout settled on her lips.
