Zander POV

I drove to the café where I had a date set up with Cleo. My rock music was set to a higher volume to drown out my thoughts. I hoped the date would go wrong. If only I could've gotten out of it.

I couldn't believe Cleo had actually agreed to go on a date with me. I'd bet her parents had convinced her to do this. She may have been my mate, but I wasn't excited to see her again. I sat with a bored expression on my face.

There was no point in hiding how I felt about the night. I rested my hand under my chin and looked out the window. I wished to be anywhere but the café.

The café was a French style and had simple white tablecloths and triangle folded napkins with pictures of Paris scattered throughout the place. There were even authentic berets placed on a table near the cashier's counter. I was told to wear one but would never wear something like that.

Cleo entered the café. She wasn't trying hard to impress me. A thin purple shirt hung on her loosely, while her jeans were a faded blue. I saw no trace of makeup on her either. Cleo sat down across from me.

She looked at me up and down and her face turned into one of disgust. I had purposely worn ripped jeans, an old band t-shirt, and worn black combat boots.

I made sure to leave my hair in its natural mess for the date. I could tell she wanted to say something to me by the look on her face.

"This wasn't my idea, but I agreed to show up. But don't think it's for your sake."

I ran a hand through my hair and said, "It wasn't my choice either. I'd rather be back home."

Cleo suddenly told me, "I'm not giving up on Ash. I still love him, but my parents forced me here tonight. Consider this me giving you a chance."

I sort of admired her guts to say that to my face and resisted a smile. "Wow you're giving me a chance. I feel so honored," I sarcastically said.

"It's the last chance Zander," she told me in a bitter tone.

I knew this was going to be a long night and glanced at my watch. The date didn't have to be long, right? Maybe she would hate me so much that she'd leave within an hour. I looked at her again and saw her hair was in a ponytail. No way was she trying either.

Unfortunately, we had to do some talking. I waited until she said something again, because I wouldn't be the first.

"Why did you show up Zander?"

Her question almost caught me off guard, and I had to get my composure back. I looked around the café and back at her. "For the food of course."

She scoffed and said, "Well at least you have honesty."

The waitress came and got our orders for drinks. "What would you like to drink?" I heard flirtation in her voice and ignored it.

I gave her a quick glance and said, "Just water."

I picked up the pepper shaker and examined it. I heard the waitress ask Cleo for her drink order next.

Cleo said kindly, "I'd like a Diet Coke."

Seconds went by in silence, so I pulled out a pen from my pocket and started to draw. I glanced up at Cleo briefly and she asked, "Are you seriously drawing right now?"

I nodded my head yes and focused on making a wolf's ears. She bunched up a napkin and threw it at me childishly. I looked up at her and glared.

"Princess. Could you not throw things at me? We're supposed to be adults."

Cleo got pissed off and said, "I would act like an adult if you did too. I mean, c'mon. You're drawing, Zander."

I showed her the drawing so far. She scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. I continued to draw until the waitress came back.

She looked at me first and asked, "What would you like to order?"

"I'll have the tuna salad with fries."

I handed her the menu and picked up my pen and started spinning it between my fingers.

The waitress turned to Cleo and asked, "What would you like to order hon?"

Did she really just call her hon? I tried not to burst out laughing, because they looked near the same age.

Cleo smiled and said, "I'd like the BLT special."

The waitress wrote down her order and went on her way. After the waitress left, I was alone with Cleo again. She kept her eyes on me with a judgmental face and started tapping her fingers against the table. I set the pen down and looked at her sharply.

"Are you trying to piss me off? You're so noisy."

Cleo put her hands up defensively and said, "I'm not the one ignoring my date. Excuse me if I was trying to keep from boredom."

"Fine. I guess we can try to be civil."

"Whoa. You actually can be an adult."

I pushed my hair away from my eyes and said, "Yeah I'm not an animal." I laughed and said, "Oh wait, I am. Sometimes."

She almost seemed like she was going to laugh. I began to feel my lips go up into a smirk. I almost made her laugh. Did this Ash make her laugh? Not that I cared about their relationship. He could keep her.

Cleo stared at my band shirt a few minutes later and seemed like she was trying to read the name. I laughed because it had long ago faded.

"What's so funny?"

"You won't be able to read it. The band's name is long gone."

Cleo laughed in a bitter tone and said, "I wasn't looking at your shirt. I was looking at the dessert menu."

Sure, she was. What a nice cover up she had.

The waitress brought bread and set it down. I took a piece of bread and buttered it before taking a big bite of it. Cleo seemed disgusted with everything I did and watched me eat the bread in a few bites.

"You basically inhaled that. Did you even taste that?"

I gave a fake look of being offended and clutched my hand over my heart. "Wow a shot has been fired."

Cleo changed the topic suddenly and said, "I don't want anything to do with you."

I smiled in a knowing way and leaned in close to her. "That's one thing I can agree on. I don't want anything to do with you either."

I watched Cleo to see if she would respond to my words. I'm sure it secretly made her happy that I didn't want to be with her. She could keep her precious fiancé. I didn't care at all. It was better to tell her the truth than pretend I wanted anything to do with her.

Before Cleo answered me, a guy with blond hair strolled in. The blond spotted Cleo and me and headed right for us. Cleo's eyes widened at the sight of the guy. It wasn't hard to tell these two knew each other. They had a kind of magnet-like energy going on about them.

The next morning, I woke to Zander's sleeping face next to me. My heart almost burst with how much I loved him. I smiled to myself remembering the day before. I stroked his hair and moved a strand away from his eyes.It was almost hard to stop stroking his hair. As Zander slept, I heard him say something. I thought it was sweet how he said my name while sleeping. I knew what he was dreaming about and felt happy he couldn't get me off his mind. Zander wouldn't get out of my mind either.A few more minutes later, I got of bed and went into the shower with my clothes from the day before. I didn't care if I repeated my outfit. While I was waiting for the water to get hot, Zander came in and slowly took in the sight of me. He was still naked from our night together.Zander approached me and whispered in my ear, "Want me to join you?"I nodded my head and stepped into the shower. The water was hot and so was Zander's gaze.Zander pressed me against the wall and knelt down near my fe

I interrupted Zander after I found him in the kitchen eating dinner. "Do you want to hang out?"As I looked at Zander, I realized something. I knew I could be with Zander since Ash was out of my life. I didn't have to keep my promise to him anymore, and he had Candice now. Zander got up and went over to me and kissed my cheek. "Just let me finish my dinner first, and I'll meet you in my room."I headed towards his room and sat down on his desk chair. Before I had never looked around his room and decided to check it out. He had a board with drawings pinned to it. Some of them were of me and others were of wolves. Suddenly Zander's voice startled me, "Do you like what you see?""These drawings are really good. I didn't know you had this talent.""I get it from my mom. She was an artist back in the day. I learned from her.""I'm sure she'd be proud of you."Zander got quiet and didn't say anything back. Had I gone too far by saying that? I didn't want him to feel grief all over

Zander and I kissed for a while and then went back to just cuddling. Suddenly, a knock came on the door. Zander groaned and looked up in annoyance.I got up and answered the door. It was Megan and she had a look of relief on her face. She hugged me and said, "Thank God you're alive. I was so worried when I lost sight of you outside."Her words made me tear up a little. "I'm glad you're alive too. I was worried about you during the battle."Megan's eyes filled with tears, and she hugged me tighter. I needed her comfort from the horrible ambush we had just gotten over. It made me feel a hint better.Megan asked, "Have you seen your parents yet?"I shook my head no and asked, "Why, have they been looking for me?"Megan nodded her head yes and walked away. My parents probably thought I was dead. I felt extremely guilty for letting them worry about me for so long. I walked out the door with Zander trailing behind me. We got to my parents' room quickly, and I urgently knocked on th

When I finished fighting another warrior, I tried to get close to Zander. He was still running towards Maurice.Suddenly, a few of Maurice's lackies blocked Zander's path. Maurice was going to get away. I had to help Zander out. Maurice didn't deserve to escape. He needed to pay for his crime. I would gladly help Zander to bring him down.Someone came running at Zander and pushed him to the ground. He was held by his hair, and I rushed to be at his side.I smacked the warrior with my wooden staff in the back. He lost his grip on Zander's hair and fell to the ground. Zander didn't waste time in pounding the guy. I searched the area but didn't see Maurice around. Had he already run away? I hoped I was wrong.More and more warriors came towards us. It seemed like the fighting would never end with how many of them there were. For some reason, I checked to see if Megan was around. I hadn't seen my friend around for a while. Was she okay?A few seconds later, I spotted Megan and she w

Ash sprinted off before I could even go after him. Was he scared of me or something?I chased after him but got stopped by a sudden warrior. The warrior was a girl a little older than me. She had a nasty scar across her cheek. The girl tried to knock me down with her wooden staff. I narrowly avoided being smacked by her staff and rushed away from her. She trailed after me and attempted to whack me with the staff again.I grabbed the staff out of her hands and swept her off her feet. She fell to the floor with a thud. I took the opportunity to kick her in the side and wanted her to stay down. Before anyone else showed, I ran towards the living room. There were many warriors fighting against our members who hadn't had their dinner spiked. Luckily, not everyone in our pack was a guard.I spotted Megan fighting against a guy who was taller than she was. Of course, she was kicking his ass and getting a lot of good kicks and punches in.Where was Zander? My heart sped up at the though

I tended to Zander's wounds over the next few days, and he got better. My presence helped him heal even faster than usual, despite the fractured ribs he had. I still can't believe that Ash would attack him so underhandedly. Meanwhile, I was still trying to forget about his betrayal.Being back home at my pack helped me feel better. I needed to get my mind off of Ash and what he did to me. Candice was someone I needed to avoid as well. No way was I seeing my traitorous sister anytime soon. She made me feel disgusted when I looked at her.So far when I had passed by Candice, I avoided eye contact and wouldn't talk to her. She hadn't tried to talk to me either. I just hoped our parents hadn't noticed our behavior. They knew we didn't get along the best, but at least we tolerated each other.A moment later, I texted Megan if she wanted to hang out and do something. It was the early afternoon, and I was taking a break from any Alpha training. It seemed time that I finally got some moment
