“Let him go.”

My voice didn’t sound like mine anymore. It came out steadier than I felt, sharp enough to cut.

The thing wearing Drake’s face paused, its head tilting slightly, as if tasting my words.

“You keep asking for mercy,” it said. “As if mercy has ever ruled blood.”

The pit below groaned. Stone shifted again, grinding against stone, and a wave of heat rolled up from the darkness. Not fire. Not lava. Something older. Something alive.

I staggered as the bond surged, pain slicing through my ribs so fiercely I nearly screamed. I dropped to one knee, clutching my chest.

Lucas.

I could feel him now, clearer than before. Conscious. Trapped. His strength was bleeding away slowly, siphoned off with every heartbeat.

“He’s suffering,” I said through clenched teeth. “That’s your goal, isn’t it?”

The creature smiled. “Suffering sharpens obedience.”

Jake moved closer to me, his blade still raised, his jaw tight with fury. “Say the word,” he murmured. “I don’t care what it is. I’ll kill it.”

“Rose—stay with me.”Lucas’s voice cut through the dark like a blade. His arms were locked around me, solid, anchoring, but the cold rushing through the bond told me he felt it too.The thing below us was not just moving. It was answering.“I hear it,” I whispered, my teeth chattering though sweat dampened my skin. “It knows me.”A deep vibration rolled through the floor, strong enough to rattle the windowpanes. Somewhere down in the fortress, stone cracked. Not shattered. Shifted. Like a door easing open after centuries of pressure.Jake’s voice shouted from the corridor, sharp with command. “Seal the inner stairwell! Nobody goes below the second ring—now!”Boots thundered past. Steel scraped. Wolves growled in unease.Lucas cupped my face, forcing my eyes to his. “You do not answer it. Whatever you hear, whatever it says—you don’t answer.”I nodded, though fear crawled up my spine. “It’s not speaking in words anymore.”Another tremor hit. Closer this time. The child kicked hard.I c

“Sit.”Lucas didn’t raise his voice, but the single word carried enough weight to still the room.Mara stopped two steps inside the chamber. Guards flanked the door behind her. Lila hovered just beyond the threshold, pale and trembling, eyes darting from Lucas to me and back again.Mara lowered herself onto the chair opposite the bed, smoothing her torn sleeves with careful hands. She looked smaller than I remembered. Thinner. Still sharp-eyed. Still calculating.“You asked to see us,” she said, dipping her chin toward Lucas. “We came.”“You asked for an audience,” Lucas corrected. “After withholding information.”Mara’s gaze slid to me. “I withheld nothing from Rose.”“That is not the same thing,” Lucas replied.I rested my hand over my stomach, steadying myself before speaking. “You said Drake reached out to you.”Mara nodded. “Before the conduit collapsed. He didn’t command me. He warned me.”“About what?” I asked.“That the curse would search for a new path if its leverage failed,

“Don’t move.”Lucas’s voice was right beside my ear, steady but tight, the way it got when he was holding something together by force of will alone.“I’m not,” I said, even as my knees threatened to fold. The chamber still hummed faintly behind us, a residual vibration like a struck bell refusing to go quiet.Jake stayed a step ahead, blade half-drawn, eyes scanning the corridor as we emerged into cooler air. “The wards are sealing,” he reported. “No echo. No bleed.”Lucas didn’t relax. “That doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences.”I knew that already. The moment Drake’s presence collapsed, something had snapped inward, not violently, but decisively. Like a door slamming shut in a storm. Whatever leverage he had been using through the conduit was gone, but the curse did not vanish with it.It recoiled. And recoil always came with a cost.We reached the antechamber just outside the lower halls. Torches burned low there, their flames steady now, as if the fortress itself was drawing

“Are you absolutely certain?”Lucas’s voice was low, steady, and threaded with the kind of fear he never allowed anyone else to hear.“Yes,” I said. “If we wait, he chooses the moment. If we act, we control the field.”Jake adjusted the strap of his sword and glanced between us. “The lower chamber is ready. Wards are masked, not broken. To anyone watching from the outside, it’ll look like a mistake. A desperate one.”“That’s what he expects,” I replied. The child shifted again, not frantic this time. Focused. The sensation was strange, unsettling in a way I hadn’t felt before. It wasn’t just movement. It was awareness.Lucas noticed my pause immediately. “What is it?”“He’s listening,” I said quietly.Jake went still. “Listening to what?”“To intent,” I answered. “Not words.”Lucas’s jaw tightened. “Then we keep ours clean.”We moved through the fortress quickly, avoiding the main corridors. Only a handful of guards knew what was happening. Fewer still knew why. That was intentional.

“Don’t turn around,” Lucas said quietly, close enough that I felt his breath brush my ear. “They’re watching from the colonnade.”“I know,” I replied. “Mara never learned how to stop looking when she thinks she’s winning.”We stood at the edge of the upper garden, pretending to admire the late-blooming jasmine while the night settled into something watchful. Torches lined the paths below, their light steady and warm, a comfort meant for ordinary evenings. This was not an ordinary evening.“The wards along the east wing flickered again,” Lucas continued. “Just for a second. Same signature as before.”“Timing?” I asked.“Right after you left the gardens with her.”I nodded. “Then she wanted me away.”Lucas’s hand closed over mine. Not tight. Grounding. “I don’t like this.”“I don’t either,” I said. “But we’re closer than we were yesterday.”Footsteps approached, measured and polite. I turned before the voice came.“Your Grace,” Mara said, dipping her head. The movement was flawless, pra
