Chapter 4: The Borderline Stand-off

Back at the Silver Crest pack grounds, the embers of the sacred bonfire were still cold, black, and dead.

Alpha Colton Vance slammed his fist into the wooden map table in his study, splintering the oak. "What do you mean, you lost her trail at the river?" he roared at his Beta enforcers. "She is an omega! She should have bled out from the rejection pain within three miles!"

"Alpha," Beta Thomas stammered, sweating profusely. "Her blood trail... it crossed into the Deadwood Forest. The scouts saw her drag herself onto Lycan territory. We didn't dare cross. If King Kaelen catches our warriors over the border, it means war."

"I don't care about a war!" Colton snarled, his amber eyes flashing with a manic, unstable light.

Ever since he uttered the words of rejection, an unbearable, hollow ache had settled into his chest. It wasn't the normal pain of a broken bond. It felt like something vital had been violently ripped out of his soul. The pack elders had spent the last two hours chanting over the black ash, and their conclusions had terrified him. Aria was hiding something. Her weakness had been a lie.

"Assemble the elite guard," Colton commanded, grabbing his silver hunting blade. "We march to the border. Now."

------------------------------

Meanwhile, on the other side of the roaring river, the morning sun was struggling to pierce through the thick, gray fog of the Deadwood Forest.

I stood on the damp moss, wrapped in a thick, black wool cloak that Kaelen had thrown over my shoulders. The fabric smelled faintly of his scent—smoky cedar and raw power. The crippling pain in my chest had finally subsided into a dull, manageable throb. For the first time in nineteen years, my inner wolf, Lily, wasn't hiding in the dark. She was pacing at the forefront of my mind, her eyes glowing with the same faint silver hue that Kaelen had uncovered.

"They're here," Kaelen’s voice rumbled from behind me.

He walked out of the cabin, wearing his dark combat gear, looking completely unbothered by the threat marching toward his lands. He didn't bring an army. He didn't even bring a weapon. He didn't need to. His very existence was a weapon.

"Are you afraid, little runaway?" Kaelen asked, his crimson eyes locking onto mine.

I looked down at my bandaged hand, remembering the silver fire that had erupted from my skin. I looked back toward the river where the heavy thud of marching boots was getting louder.

"No," I whispered, and to my surprise, I meant it. "Not anymore."

"Good," Kaelen purred, a dark, approving smirk playing on his lips. "Let's go greet your former master."

We walked down to the edge of the rushing, black waters. Across the river, thirty elite Silver Crest warriors stood in a tight defensive formation, their claws extended and teeth bared. At the front stood Alpha Colton, his face contorted in a mix of rage and exhaustion.

When Colton’s eyes landed on me, he visibly flinched. He expected to find me crawling in the dirt, begging for mercy, or dead. Instead, I was standing tall, my skin glowing with a healthy radiance, completely protected by the towering figure of the Lycan King.

"Kaelen!" Colton shouted across the water, his Alpha voice strained. "You are harboring a fugitive of the Silver Crest pack. Return the omega to us immediately, and we will disregard this trespass."

Kaelen didn't answer right away. He casually stepped in front of me, partially blocking Colton's view, establishing his absolute dominance over the situation.

"You stand at my border, a boy-Alpha with a pack of puppies, making demands of the crown?" Kaelen’s voice wasn't loud, but it carried across the roaring river with a terrifying, heavy vibration that made the Silver Crest warriors instinctively take a step back. "You must have lost your mind along with your honor, Vance."

"She belongs to my pack!" Colton hissed, his jaw clenching. "She is my mate!"

"Correction," Kaelen replied smoothly, tilting his head. "She was your fated mate. Until you stood before your ancestors and threw her away like trash. The moment you rejected her, you severed her ties to your bloodline. She is no longer an omega of Silver Crest. She belongs to the Deadwood now."

"I am her Alpha! I can revoke the rejection!" Colton yelled, desperate. He took a step into the shallow water of the river, his eyes locking onto mine through the fog. "Aria! Look at me! Command your wolf to come back to the pack link. You are committing treason!"

I stepped out from behind Kaelen’s massive shoulder. I pulled the black cloak tighter around me and looked directly into the eyes of the man who had broken my heart on the sacred altar.

"There is no link left, Colton," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the water. "You wanted a strong Luna. You wanted power. You threw me away because you thought I was nothing."

I raised my right hand, unwrapping the white bandage with a slow, deliberate motion. The deep slice on my palm was completely gone, replaced by a flawless, glowing silver scar in the shape of a crescent moon.

As I exposed the scar to the morning light, a faint hum of silver energy pulsed through the air. Across the river, three of Colton’s elite warriors instantly dropped to their knees, their wolves whimpering in primal submission to the ancient mark.

Colton froze, his face draining of all color as he realized the catastrophic mistake he had made.

"Go back to your pack, Alpha Colton," I whispered, my silver eyes flashing in the morning fog. "Because the next time I cross this river, I won't be running. I'll be coming for your crown."

The celestial pressure was so immense that the standard torches along the ramparts sputtered and died, leaving the city illuminated entirely by the cold, unnatural glow of the ripping sky.Natalia stood at the center of the Grand Plaza of Lords, surrounded by five thousand veterans of the Free Guard and the remaining heavy cavalry of General Vane’s Iron Division. The high stained-glass windows of the empty council chamber reflected the sickly green light, casting long, fractured shadows across the white cobblestones that had been scrubbed clean of King Malakor's ash a decade ago.General Vane rode his heavy black stallion to the front of the formation, the thick plate armor of his mount scoring the stones beneath its hooves. He pulled his iron visor up, his flint-like eyes lookin

Chapter 179: The Ten-Year ShadowThe sky over the silver ridges was a clean, brilliant blue, completely free of the toxic alchemical soot that had choked the province for a generation.Ten full years had passed since the night the Southern Gatehouse fell and the throne of King Malakor was closed forever. Natalia stood on the high parapet of the city’s newly reinforced northern bastion, her long leather coat snapping loudly in the bitter mountain wind. She was older now; thin silver lines touched the dark hair at her temples, and a deep, faded scar from an old obsidian graze ran along her left jawbone. However, her eyes remained just as sharp, cold, and unyielding as they had been when she was a simple thief surviving the back alleys of the slums.Beside her stood Captain Jaren, his dark uniform coat adorned with the simple iron crest of the Oakhaven Free Guard. He held a thick, leather-bound military report in his hands, his face grim as his eyes scanned the jagged mountain peaks stre

Chapter 178: The Monument in the DeepThree months had passed since the night the Southern Gatehouse fell, and for the first time in a century, the air inside the mountain core was perfectly quiet. The volatile alchemical fires had been fully drained from the central aqueducts, and the toxic fog had cleared from the deep caverns, leaving the stone cold, dark, and smelling of damp earth. The monstrous Siphon machine had been entirely dismantled, its heavy iron gears and gold conduits melted down in the lower foundries to reinforce the city’s defensive gates.Natalia walked down the tiered black amphitheater alone, a single oil lantern held in her hand. Her boots didn't click against the stone anymore; she had replaced her old, stiff street leathers with a pair of soft, functional scout boots given to her by Jaren. The silence down here was absolute, a stark contrast to the endless construction noise and political shouting that now dominated the surface world. She reached the edge of th

Chapter 177: The Assembly of AshThe Grand Chamber of the High Council did not look like a ballroom anymore. The air inside the massive, amphitheater-style room was thick with the scent of cold ash and sweat, a stark contrast to the expensive lavender oils and burning perfumes that usually masked the stench of the upper class. The high, tiered cedar benches were packed to absolute capacity, but the pristine silk doublets, tailored coats, and velvet cloaks of the nobility were now aggressively mingled with the stained leather jackets of the iron-miners and the grey wool shawls of the lower ward weavers.General Vane’s heavy infantry stood at every single exit, their polished steel pikes held strictly vertical, a cold and unyielding reminder of exactly who controlled the very air the lords were breathing. The standard, comfortable authority of the aristocracy had been entirely stripped away, replaced by the tense, breathless silence of a captive audience waiting for the axe to fall.At

The toxic emerald funnel that had threatened to pull the atmosphere into the abyss had completely vanished from the sky. It left behind only the standard, industrial violet haze of an Oakhaven morning, though the air felt strangely light, stripped of the heavy alchemical static that had choked the province for a generation. The streets were dead quiet now. The third cohort of the Iron Division stood guard at the shattered remnants of the southern gatehouse, their massive silver shields lined with the red mud and grey soot of the defensive ditch. He turned to face her, his massive obsidian features softened by a calm, profound serenity that she had never seen on him since the day they had dragged him out of the slave pens. He reached out, his massive crystalline index finger gently tapping the center of her forehead, right between her eyes."Do not look down, Natalia," Kael rumbled, his voice carrying over the roar of the rift like a steady bell. "Remember the sky. Remember the lower wards when the air was clean.""Kael, please," Natalia wept, her fingers locking around his wrist. The heat of his skin was fading again, turning into a cool, solid density as he prepared to release the core's energy back into the system."You are the voice of the city now, Little Sparrow," Kael said.
