"With the power bestowed on me, I pronounce you man, and wife," the priest said.

The large crowd cheered loudly as Alpha Damien kissed Eleanor.

I trembled as I could still remember how this started. It wasn't my intention to break the rules, but having no other chance, I had to.

What did I do wrong that could result in the Alpha's drastic decision? He had marked me and promised me the best in life.

I loved him before knowing I was his mate. I was always praying to the goddess that I would be his mate.

Everything was going well when I knew that he was my mate, my life partner.

All kinds of thoughts ran through my mind as I thought of the reason he could be with someone else at the altar.

He was meant to be my mate, and not Eleanor's.

I staggered backward as Eleanor Salvador and Alpha Damien walked forward.

She had always been my rival, but she is the biological daughter of the person I consider my father, as he was only taking care of me.

She chuckled, making me realize that she was mocking my vulnerability.

"Esperanza, Damien is mine forever," she sneered.

She sauntered away with her hand on Damien. This really hurt me.

I felt sad within me. A terrible pain rose within my stomach. I despised him so much. He didn't show that he cared about me.

"Why did you have to choose her? Why not me? I am your mate, your better half. We had gone through all the rituals before now. Why did you choose to marry her?" I questioned, pointing at him.

The crowd murmured, and Alpha Damien turned, staring into my eyes.

"I choose whoever I want as my mate, and today I have chosen Eleanor Salvador as my mate," he said without sparing a glance at me.

"Do remember that you have marked and promised me the best in life," I said, not caring about the gazes that were on me.

"Well, that is true, but I can choose anyone I like, and I reject you, Esperanza Annie Salvador, as my mate. I take Eleanor Salvador as my mate. Consider my promise a lie, and accept my rejection," he ordered.

I moved back, shocked by the way he spoke. Eleanor walked to me with a smile on her face and placed a hand on my chest.

"I guess you understand now that he just rejected you. Accept the Alpha's rejection," she said with a smirk on her face.

I wanted to reply to her, but I found no words to say to her. My head felt blank as I tried to process all that happened.

I couldn't process all that I just heard so how was I to reply her? It felt uneasy for me.

I wanted to slap away the smirk on her face, but I stood helpless. When did I become so helpless that Eleanor could ride on?

"I, Esperanza Annie, accept your rejection, Alpha Damien Nick," I said through gritted teeth, trying to stay bold and confident.

The crowd began to murmur again, and at this point, I knew my life had taken a turn for the worse.

I walked straight into the pack house, and several people pointed mocking fingers at me. They were people who had always favored me and backed me up when I was to be the future Luna, but now they were against me.

Without replying them, I walked into my chamber in a bid to clear my head, and to meet with my god uncle.

My face was clear of tears, but my heart felt heavy, filled with pain and hurt that made me sob inwardly.

I remembered that he had always told me not to show my weakness.

He pulled me into his arms and closed the door as I continued sobbing. His arms were something I craved whenever I was sad.

"You should let it out," he said patting my back. "You can let out your tears when you are with me. I know it is hurting so let your tears flow. You are in safe hands."

I let the tears out as I poured out all my pain and grief. I still couldn't believe everything that happened was real.

"I'm sorry this happened to you," he said in a grievous tone; his voice was shaking.

"My mate just rejected me, and I do not think I will ever have one again," I said, with tears flowing down my face. "In a few days, I will be thrown out for not having my mate. Why is the world so cruel to me? What kind of fate do I have? Eleanor is so wicked."

I sobbed more, letting the pain out of me. His shirt was soaked with my tears which continued flowing. All I could think of was the world's cruelty.

My body moved rigorously as he tightened his grip on me.

The past days were the hardest and most torturous days of my life. People mocked, embarrassed, and moved away from me anytime I went out like I was a plague. They resorted to using all forms of vague language on me.

This reminded me of an advice my father had given me when he was alive. He had said, "It is better for someone not to get to a high point than to get there, and later fall."
