Rex POV
Ethan and I are already at Hayley's house when she drives in at half nine. This is the first morning she hasn't been here already having her morning catch up with Cooper, the two of them smiling and flirting like teenagers. We exchange a knowing glance and grin at each other. Given she knows hardly anyone else in town, there was only one place she could be coming from this early in the morning.
"Morning Hayley! You're up and about early!" Ethan calls to her as she climbs out of her car. She grimaces, knowing she has been caught red-handed, but where normally Hayley would join in the teasing and the banter, today she keeps her head down and rushes past us. She swipes at her face and averts her eyes as she runs inside.
"Don't be a dick." I scold him, wondering what's wrong. Ten minutes later, she is leaving again looking as polished as always in her work clothes, but still, her body language is tense. You can tell her outfits cost money b
Cooper POVI've been trying to get hold of Hayley all day, but she won't answer my calls or respond to any of my text messages. When my dad finally catches up with me and tells me what Hayley had uncovered, and that she had been to the packhouse to tell him, personally, I know something is wrong. I can't imagine her not coming by to see me or at least sending me a message to say she was here.By 3 o'clock, my wolf is going crazy, and I have a physical pain in my chest. It finally dawns on me that with the strengthening bond, I could be feeling her pain. After what Rex said this morning about her seeming upset, that's enough to get me into my car and drive to Hayley's office to check up on her. The closer I get, the worse I start to feel and I'm starting to get worried. I have a mountain of work that I should be doing but I won't be able to concentrate until I see her. When I finally get to her office and push the door open, I am not prepared for th
Cooper POVI should have kissed her.Screw who saw us, I should have grabbed her and kissed her with everything I had and never let her go.But I hesitated, and that hesitation may have cost me my mate. She's right to be pissed off. I'm furious with myself.Nathan had tried to goad me into admitting she was my mate, and I should have either admitted that she was mine and sworn him to secrecy, or laid him out with a punch. Agreeing with him just so that he'd leave me in peace was disrespectful to Hayley, my soulmate and the most precious thing in my life. The guilt is gnawing away at my insides knowing how hurt she must have been to hear that. It would have devastated me if it were the other way around. Damn it!Now she thinks I am an asshole, that I was just using her for a good time. She doesn't know that I would do anything for her, that I love her with every bit of my heart and soul. Because I do love her. Even without the mate bond, I'd
Hayley POVA soft rap on the front door drags me out of my depressed stupor and over to the window to check who it is. A broad back in a red and black check flannel shirt that I can barely see past could only be one man, Marcus. Who else turns their back on a door and still expects it to be opened for them?"Hi, Marcus. What's up?" I ask, cracking the door open and leaning against the frame, trying to hide from view given that I look a complete mess and need a shower pretty badly. I've worked from home for the last couple of days, wallowing in my misery as I obsess about Cooper and what happened."Come on Hayls, don't what's up me. Open the door." He says sternly, using a massive hand to push the front door wide open before striding into my home like he owns the place."This isn't a great time Marcus," I say, still standing by the open door, arms folded in front of me to hide my bra-lessness and my faded, baggy sweatshirt and leggings. He ignores me as he
Hayley POVBy the time Marcus pulls up in front of the lodge, there are already cars everywhere and people milling around with drinks and food in their hands, laughing and chatting. I fiddle nervously with the hem of my delicate pale blue V-neck dress, there are way more people here than I expected."Hayley, just go and enjoy yourself. It'll all work out." Marcus smiles reassuringly at me as I climb out."I think this is a bad idea..." I start, hesitating before closing the door. I had convinced myself that I'd be able to handle seeing Cooper, that I'd just avoid him, but that if I had to talk to him, I could be civil and stay calm. Now I know I was just fooling myself."I'm not letting you back in this car Hayley," Marcus says, sensing that I was ready to turn tail and run straight home. "You live here now too, and no matter what happens with you and Cooper, you're not hiding anymore. Do you hear me?" I nod, feeling a bit stronger after Marcus's pep talk
Cooper POVFury fills me that I have to stand here talking to this prick Reynolds and act as though I don't want to rip him limb from limb while my mate walks away from me, again. Hurt, again. His father, the previous Alpha, was a terrible leader and a downright sick person if the rumors are to be believed. Relations between our packs have been tense for years. My mother originally came from the Reynolds pack and Dean's father had tried to stop her leaving, wanting to force her to become his chosen mate. He fought my father for her hand and lost fair and square, but over the years, his bitterness towards our family had grown. He took every opportunity he could to make our lives difficult, blocking business deals, refusing to let any of his pack mate with us or work for our businesses or in our town. We also suspected him of initiating constant small-scale attacks on our people and property.Dean took over a couple of years ago but given his reputat
Cooper POVHiding is not very Alpha-like behavior, but that is exactly what I am doing. I am so angry with myself for making such a mess of everything and I know if I go back out to that stupid party I will do or say something that I regret.A gentle knock sounds on the door and then it opens wide, revealing Leila and Ethan who are both looking at me with apprehension as I knock back yet another glass of very expensive whiskey. This is becoming a bit of a habit. I'm sure I make quite the picture, drowning my sorrows in the dark, leaning back in my leather chair, feet up on the desk amidst a sea of chaos. My computer, books, pens, and paper are strewn all over the room and a bookcase lies tipped on its side."Rex dropped her off safe and sound. How are you holding up?" Ethan asks, stepping over the mess without acknowledging it and leaning against the fireplace, arms folded across his chest."Just great Ethan, my mate ran hates me because she thinks I am e
Hayley POVI scan the living room to see if I can find anything to use as a weapon but other than a few flimsy picture frames or a lamp, there's nothing with any potential. My eyes drift to the hall table and I see the small plastic red handle of a screwdriver sticking out from behind a bowl.Jackpot.Except it's all the way over on the other side of the room."I've moved hours away from you James, I haven't contacted the police since they dropped the charges. I have a new job, a new home here, I have no interest in making your life difficult." I continue to try and reason with him, even though I know it is pointless, he has made his decision and is already committed."I don't care Hayley. Nobody makes a fool of me." He shouts, as he stands suddenly and steps in front of me, close enough that I can feel the heat radiating off his body.James tucks a strand of my blood-soaked hair behind my ear and runs his thumb over my lips. His to
Leila POV"Smooth," Ethan says sarcastically, putting his face in his hands and shaking his head as Cooper fills us in on how he introduced Cooper to Alpha Reynolds as just a colleague."Just shut up." Cooper snaps, looking as though he is about to destroy everything that isn't nailed down if Ethan riles him up anymore. Not that there's much left untouched as it is."Leila, will you just answer your fucking phone?" Cooper growls loudly as the buzzing of my phone fills the air again. I am about to send it to voicemail before I see Marcus's name flashing up on the screen."Marcus?" I answer cautiously. I didn't even know he had my phone number."Leila, finally! Why aren't you answering your phone?" He barks down the line."Well hello to you too." I snap back. The brief glimmer of excitement I felt at seeing that the big, growly object of my desire was calling me has been quickly extinguished by his rudeness. Fate has a twisted sense of humor p
