It does not arrive. That is the part nobody told me.

A smell arriving is a smell arriving. This is the other way round. It goes like a held note stopping, and what is in the room afterwards is not a new thing. It is the absence of the thing that had been keeping the room quiet.

I was standing in the middle of my own floor with my sleeves pushed up past the elbow, doing nothing at all, and it went.

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 46 · It Burns Faster

I could smell him, and by four o’clock it had cost me a week.Nobody was doing anything. That wants saying first, because of the versions of it that have been read back to me since. There was no arrangement. Neither of us had gone anywhere to find the other. It was the east corridor at about three in the afternoon, which is the dullest hour in the dullest passage in that compound, and I was carrying a list.He came round the corner from the stair end with two sheets in his hand and no coat on and he was reading as he walked. Two things had changed about me that week and I knew about neither of them.I had moved the oil to the morning. After the stillroom I could not stand having it done to me in the evening by lamplight, so I did the reachable parts myself at breakfast, at the glass, with the door shut, and left the str

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 45 · The Second Sum

I have been bricking my own mother in since I was eleven.I went back two days later because he is the only person in three hundred miles who answers a question. Not kindly. Kindly is no use to me and never has been. He answers it the way it is asked, in order, with the part he does not know marked as the part he does not know, and there is nobody else in the north who does that for anybody. He had the paper out before I sat down.I understood a long time afterwards that he had been in that room for two days waiting on me, with a clean sheet squared to the edge of the bench. He had worked out what the next question was going to be, and he was not going to make me ask it standing up.“Everybody is going to tell you the smell is the loss,” he said. “It is not. Sit down and I will put it on paper.”I need

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 44 · Not Medicine

I found out what it was with three days of it on my skin.He told me standing up.Emory Thorne has given me a great many things in that room and every one of them sitting down, on his own stool, with his hands somewhere about a page.He was on his feet before I was through the door and he never sat down, and I had the shape of the afternoon off that before he opened his mouth.“Burnt greyroot, rendered into fat. That is all that is in it.”“Yes.”“It does not add a smell. It destroys them.”I said yes, and had no idea at all what I had just agreed to.He saw it. He waited, and then he said it again, slower, with a space put in before the last two words, which I have never heard that man do, before or since.“It does not add a smell.

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 43 · There Is More

My father sent two jars, and they cost me every figure I had.The crate came up in a week when nothing comes up out of the Lowmarch. The river road was under water. It goes under every spring at the south crossing, the carters know it, the house knows it, and anything on the wrong side of it waits. This did not wait.Three men and two days at a flooded ford, for a box the size of a bread tin.I did not ask who had sent them down there and nobody told me, and when I worked it out a long while afterwards I was not able to do anything with it except sit on a step.Three men off the work lists in the week the low fields want drains. A cart and a pair. Two nights’ lodging at a crossing inn with a flooded river between it and home. What I thought at the time was that the post in that house ran well, and that nobody had looked

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 42 · What Emory Found in It

He found what had been done to her and did not write it down.He had taken it off her floorboards twenty-six nights ago.She had cleaned up after the breakage and she had done it well. Two rags, burnt in her own grate, and the gap between the boards gone out with a knife point, and if he had come up an hour later there would have been nothing there at all.He came up with a lamp to see whether the floor wanted oiling, which is a thing nobody has ever said to him since and nobody believed at the time, and he went down with about a quarter of a teaspoon of her on a blade. He has not mentioned it to her. Not in twenty-six nights, and not on four seventh evenings with his own hands on her back.He worked on it after the fires went down, which is the only time that stillroom belongs to him.Nineteen nights of it. He is not a quick man and has never pr

  • The Alpha’s Scentless Bride   CHAPTER 41 · Medicine

I said my father’s sentence perfectly, and it sent him after the wrong person. He left it a whole day, and leaving it is worse than asking at once.I had it coming that same night, lying in the dark with my coat over a chair and a man’s thumb still somewhere behind my eyes. Then I had it coming at breakfast. Then I had it coming through a morning with nothing in it, and every hour of that morning charged me something, and by two o’clock I was paying interest on a question nobody had put.A thing you are braced for all day costs more than a thing that arrives. Any woman who has waited outside a study door will tell you the same and none of us can prove it.The long room runs the width of that house and has nine windows down one side.He was at the near end with two sheets laid out and he did not stand up, which is how I knew it was business and not the other thing.Nadira Vale was at the far end with the linen list. And the door onto the passage stood wide open.I priced the room befor
