Aurora POV
It is Jackson, of all people, that keeps me from being sliced open by Ivy’s claws.
Jackson rushes over, wraps his arms around Ivy, and lifts her off my body. I watch as he runs a soothing hand over her hair, whispering into her ear to calm her down. In return, Ivy’s fiery gaze softens, and her claws retract.
The anger is still there, but she’s no longer paying attention to me. Her focus is fully on Jackson, giving me a chance to catch my breath, but I can’t get away. Jackson’s sister grabs my arm again, stopping me from running.
“Don’t even think about it,” she hisses, baring her teeth at me.
“Let go,” I order, my shaky voice not fooling anyone.
When none of them listen to me, my fear melts a bit and anger rises.
“She’s here to steal you away,” Ivy whines, leaning further into Jackson’s arms. Jackson coddles her. Everything that’s happened here is his fault. The way I was hurt and treated was all because of him.
“I’m not here to steal him away,” I bark, fighting back the disgust for the two of them. “If anything, you’re the one taking him from me. I am… was his mate. If he treated me like this, then how do you think he’ll treat you when he’s done with you?”
“I only came here to get my money back,” I tell her, hoping she’ll just leave it be. Only, my words seem to fuel her on, making her angrier.
“Your money?” She screeches. “I see you’re exactly what Jackson said you were: a money hungry gold-digger who needs to be punished for her lies.”
“Puni-What?” I stare at her, not understanding. If they would just give me my money, I’d be gone, and they would never have to see me again. I look at Jackson, who immediately turns his head away from me.
The bastard knows exactly what he’s doing and doesn’t feel one hint of remorse.
How did I not see this before now?
Biting back the tears, I turn to the three people in front of me and grit my teeth, “You have no evidence to use against me.”
Ivy scoffs, then laughs arrogantly, “My older brother is an Alpha. Who dares to stop me?”
“Alpha Thorne is your stepbrother,” I say, “And from what I hear, your relationship isn’t that great. Is it? Does he really spoil you to the point that you feel like you can do whatever you want with no consequences? Maybe someone should teach you how not to abuse power when you have it.”
I must have struck a nerve in Ivy because she lunges at me again, and this time, Jackson doesn’t hold her back. She grabs me by the shoulders and growls in my face, digging her nails into my skin.
Pain ignites like a fire where her claws sink into me, and I have to bite my tongue not to cry out.
“You better watch your words, human slut,” Ivy threatens, shoving me back. I stumble, but luckily, I don’t fall this time. “I’ll throw you into jail to prove to you I have more power than you can ever imagine.”
There’s no one here to help me, not that they would even if they were. Humans aren’t treated well by werewolves, and with Alpha Thorne being her family, no one would stand up to Ivy.
Not for me.
“What’s going on here?” A deep, powerful voice rumbles, making everyone turn.
The man I slept with steps out of the shadows. He looks just as handsome as he did last night and just a little bit ago when I saw him, and now that I truly look at him, I can see just how well dressed he is.
I glance down at myself and my plain dress, trying to ignore the embarrassment that burns my cheeks. No wonder he offered me money with the excuse of purchasing better clothes. I must look like a bum to him.
His eyes scan the people present, and then his eyes fall on Ivy. She immediately changes, her icy look turning to one of adoration as she turns docile and sweet.
“Big brother!” She rushes to his side, clinging to his arm like a child clings to their mother for protection. Her actions surprise me but not as much as her words. This man, the one who expressed a bit of concern for my bruises, and the one who I… we… last night…
Oh, my god. This is Alpha Thorne?
I slept with Alpha Thorne?
I can’t move as he looks down at Ivy. I’m stunned. I could tell he’s a high-ranking wolf, but for him to be the infamous Alpha Thorne is insane. And I’m insane. I was so incredibly rude both times I walked away from him. Not to mention the fact that I argued with him.
No one would dare be so disrespectful to Alpha Thorne, yet I was. A chill runs down my spine, and I take a few steps back. Only, I can’t get away because Jackson’s sister grabs me again. I glare at her, but shrink back when she shoves me back toward the group.
Ivy takes the chance to thrust an accusing finger at me, “This disrespectful human dares to claim that she’s Jackson’s mate! It’s absurd. She’s just a human slut who is trying to take his money.”
Ivy continues moving forward, her eyes falling on my neck, “And look! Aurora really is a slut. She must have found someone else to sleep with when Jackson turned her away.” I try to move away, but she’s fast and grabs me by the shoulder, dragging me in front of Alpha Thorne and yanking my head back.
“This hickey is proof,” the awful girl growls.
I don’t want to look up at him, but when Ivy forces my head back, my eyes connect with Alpha Thorne’s.
The heated eyes from last night are nowhere to be seen. Now, all I see are eyes that are serious and inspecting. Not even he will help me, I bet.
What happened last night probably didn’t mean anything to him. The thought and this awful situation has my eyes filling with tears. Even then, pain sparks when Ivy tilts my head more to the side and points at my neck, while hissing, “Big brother, let’s lock her up. She must have found a sugar daddy in the pack who she can leach off of now that she doesn’t have Jackson.”
“I didn’t–”
Ivy tightens her grip, silencing me.
“A woman like her shouldn’t be allowed in the pack,” Ivy says, looking up at her brother. A woman like me? What does she know about me?
I want to scream the words but it will only do me more harm.
Something wet rolls down my cheek, and Alpha Thorne looks down at me. His eyes follow the tear down my cheek as another follows it.
“I wasn’t here to do anything with Jackson,” I say, wanting to be done with this. “I already told you–”
“Shut up. I trust Jackson and he said you’re here to steal him away from me,” Ivy hisses. “Did you think I would run and let you take him back?”
I whimper at the pain growing in my head from her grip.
“Ivy, release her,” Alpha Thorne says calmly.
“Why? So she can run back to her new sugar daddy?” She asks with a laugh.
“A new sugar daddy?” Alpha Thorne questions, turning to his sister. “You mean me?”
Aurora’s POVI don’t think I’ve ever been this nervous. What in the world do Ivy’s parents- Thorne’s parents- want to see me for? She didn’t say, just told me there was a car waiting to drive me to their house. Her little smirk didn’t make me feel any better either. It’s like she’s expecting me to get into trouble, which again, wouldn’t surprise me. I’m sure she would like it if her parents just got rid of me.The car pulls into a long driveway and stops in front of a luxurious house that resembles a mansion. It looks like somewhere that royalty would live, which makes me more nervous. To make things worse, I’m alone. Thorne hadn’t come with me because Ivy said their parents wanted to talk to me alone.I wanted to beg Thorne to come with me, but I also didn’t want to give Ivy the satisfaction of seeing me rattled. Although, she probably already noticed. Most of the time, my emotions are written all over my face.It makes it hard to keep my feelings hidden. As I step out of the car, I
Aurora POVIt’s been two days since the bridal shop fiasco, so I thought Ivy would leave me alone. I was wrong because she’s currently marching up to my desk with Jackson following behind her. What now?“You’re joining Jackson to the meeting about our wedding venues while I head to the florist to fix a problem,” Ivy demands smugly. Am I the only one who thinks it’s strange that she keeps trying to put me and Jackson together? The last person I want to be around right now is my ex, yet his fiancé- a woman who hates me- keeps putting us in the same room together. It’s suspicious and has my guard going up. I don’t know if it’s her idea or Jackson’s idea, but being alone with him is not how I want to spend any of my time.I pause at the thought.Just a month ago, I was excited to see him, to be around him for any amount of time, and now I’ve done a complete 180 change. The irony isn’t lost on me as I glance at Thorne’s office. I want to tell him what’s going on, but again, he’s out at a m
Aurora’s POV“I’m sorry. Any moonstone ring we had, we’ve sold long ago. Moonstone items are the fastest selling pieces,” the man at the pawn shop says with a slight frown. Glancing down at the text my mom sent after I left the hospital, I show it to the man.“She said it has wolf etchings in the band and instead of the usual blueish tone to the stone, it’s more of a purple. Does that ring a bell?” I ask, hoping something will click in his mind. He pauses for a moment to think, then reaches beneath the counter.“I have had several pieces like how you describe, but in the last ten years…” he flips through the book before stopping on a page and humming, “Yes. I sold some moonstone jewelry a few years ago to several buyers. I don’t usually give out people’s information, but since it’s been so long, I’ll make an exception this once.”“Thank you, sir.” I watch as he writes down several names and phone numbers, giving me the first real leads that I can follow.“I hope you find what you’re l
Aurora’s POVMy legs give out beneath me, and I fall back into the chair outside of my stepfather’s hospital room. A nurse eyes me with annoyance, but I don’t pay her any attention. I can’t. Everything around me blurs. Sounds become muted. Air becomes stale.I try to breathe, but the air gets caught in my chest, making me gasp and lean back against the wall. I clutch at my chest. This has to be a lie, a cruel joke that my stepfather cooked up to get back at me for saying I won’t give them more money. It… it can’t be real. She’s the only mother I’ve ever known. The mother who raised me, who kissed my knee when I scraped it falling off my bike, who worked extra hours to get me the cellphone I wanted for Christmas, who kept me safe when I felt like the world was against me.She was my mom.I shake my head to clear it and suck in a long, deep breath. What reason would they have to lie right now? There’s no one around for them to lie to, and they don’t know I’m outside the door, so…My che
Aurora’s POV How am I supposed to keep from catching feelings for Thorne if he keeps saving me like he did yesterday at lunch? Also, what am I supposed to do now that I can’t stop thinking about him?Yesterday, Thorne had swooped in right in time to get Ethan to release me. Then, he took me away with the excuse of helping me calm down, though, I felt like he was also in need of time to calm down. The car ride back to my house was completely silent, but it was comfortable silence. The only noises were the sounds of our breathing, and I’m sure the fast beating of my heart because Thorne wouldn’t let go of my thigh. As soon as he got in the car, his hand was on my thigh, squeezing gently as if he needed it there to remind him I was beside him.I liked it… probably too much.Another thing I liked way too much, that I would never admit out loud, was how he hauled me into the house, threw me against the wall, and kissed me like he needed me more than air. My thigh still tingles where his h
Thorne’s POVThat Gamma better take his hand off Aurora before he loses it. Does everyone think they can touch her whenever and however they want? It’s like she’s a magnet, pulling all the men to her while also driving me crazy.I dig my extending claws into my thigh, biting back a feral growl as the man’s hand trails up her hand to her wrist then back down again. Then, he smiles at my woman.No. I shake my head. She’s not my woman. I need to get that thought out of my head and focus on why I’m here today.“Get him away from our mate,” my wolf growls.I want to do exactly that, but I can’t. Alpha Rainer rearranged his schedule to meet with me today, and I can’t disrespect him by being distracted. I drag my attention away from Aurora and pin it on Alpha Rainer.“The weekend after next would be an ideal time if you’re free then. I’ll gather a group of my best men, and you can bring any you deem necessary for the joint patrol,” Rainer says. Every now and then, packs have joint border pat
Emma’s POVThat mutt Jackson might just be out of his mind.I shake my head with a chuckle as I watch Aurora type away at her computer. There’s no way this human could be Thorne’s mate. She’s so… plain and human. By default, humans are weak and nearly worthless in our world, and this woman is no different.Yesterday, after overhearing Jackson’s assistant tell Jackson that he thought Aurora was Thorne’s mate, I invited her to the party. I shouldn’t have been so gullible, but my crush blinded me, and I wanted to see how the human and Thorne acted around each other when they weren’t at work. It was stupid.Yes, Aurora had stuck by Thorne’s side, but she barely talked to him the entire time. She didn’t grow jealous when other women talked with Thorne. They left the party together, but that could have been a coincidence. Thorne is a nice man, so he could have just been making sure his weak human assistant got home safe.I’ve known Thorne for a long time, which has helped me develop a crush
Aurora’s POVWhat is it with assholes thinking they can corner me and touch me without my consent?Clutching at my chest, I take several deep breaths. I stare at the door Jackson just walked out of, wondering if anyone noticed he was in the women’s bathroom.“Next time a man touches you or tries to touch you without your consent, tell me. I won’t allow it.”Thorne’s words echo in my mind as I begin to come down from the fear induced adrenaline rush. I promised I would tell Thorne if someone bothered me, but should I tell him now or wait until we’re in private? If I tell him now, will he do something about it?With the intention of telling Thorne what Jackson had done, I make my way down the corridor and to the dining hall. Most people are sitting and eating, but a few are standing around talking. I search the room, immediately spotting Jackson who stands not far from me.A chill runs over me, but he doesn’t notice me. His eyes are focused across the room on Thorne and the woman who in
Jackson POVMy phone rings from underneath my piles of paperwork, and I dig through them to snatch it up.“This is Jackson.”“Sir,” my assistant’s voice greets me. “I have news that could be useful to you.”Instantly interested, I drop the paperwork and focus on the call, asking, “What is it?”“I’ve heard whispers that Alpha Thorne’s most beloved lover is going to be at the dinner tonight,” he says on a whisper. I glance around, making sure no one is listening. This is big. I’ve been looking for a way to get on the Alpha’s good side, and this could be my chance.“Have my good suit prepared and ready for me when I leave work,” I instruct. If I can get on this woman’s good side, I might be able to convince her to help me. Since Thorne rejected my project, I’ve been looking for any weakness or flaw that I could extort to get him to accept my project. I didn’t want to use dirty tricks at first because he could easily figure out who is behind such dealings, but this is different. If he has
