Darien

The storm had pinned us down in a shallow cave carved into the northern ridge, snow driving sideways across the mouth of the entrance in sheets so thick I couldn't see three feet beyond it. Cain crouched beside the fire we'd managed to coax from wet wood, his massive shoulders hunched, eyes scanning the white wall of weather. We'd been on our way to meet up with the others but couldn't go any farther tonight.

The mountains had other ideas.

I leaned against the cold stone wall and reached

DarienThe council sat at noon, and by the time the doors closed, every person at that table had already done the math and arrived at the same answer, which was that there wasn’t one. This is the group that was agreed upon when Tracey joined back in with her lycans. Two ruling factions under one rule. They were used to having a say and I admit that it was more fair this way.I laid it all out. Cain taught me a long time ago that bad news goes on the table all at once, in the open, because the moment you start deciding what people can bear is the moment they stop trusting your numbers. So the map went down in the middle of the council table, the same map from my study, carried down that morning because I had stopped pretending it lived anywhere else. We looked over all the units. Every group we have sent out and their placements.“That’s the kingdom,” I said. “That’s all of it.”Nobody spoke. The steward looked at the map the way a man looks at a bill.“Moonridge has been under sustain

Leah“I’m sitting in the dark listening to my brother count dead wolves. Of course I’m not okay.”“That’s not what I mean. It feels like there is something else.”There was a whole other thing sitting in my chest, and it had nothing to do with him, and it had been sitting there since dinner the other night … somehow he could sense it. But he wasn’t going to be burdened with it. Not while he was out there fighting.“Worry about yourself. I’m fine here. Go do your job,” I said. “And call me. You. Not a report. You.”“Yes, Your Majesty.”In the background I heard a rushed voice and recognized him immediately.

LeahThe reports went from boring to bad in the space of a week, and then Anton called, which he never did.It was past midnight. The phone lit the ceiling of our room before it made a sound, and I was awake and reaching for it before the first ring finished, because some part of me had been waiting for exactly this since the reports turned.“Leah.”Only my name. No queen graces me, no there she is. Just my name, in a voice that sounded like he had been shouting across a field for a week.“I’m here.” I was already sitting up. Beside me, Darien came awake, and his hand settled between my shoulder blades and stayed there. “Tell me.”“Six nights.” He didn’t waste breath on a greeting either. “Six nights in a row, different point on the perimeter every time, and they don’t run anymore. They hit and they hold and they make us pay to push them back off. We’re paying.”“How much?”“Seven wolves. Nine hurt badly enough that they’re out of it.” A pause I could hear him fighting through. “One o

LeahAnd I meant it. I really did mean it. When I hugged Tracey, I meant it with my whole chest, and when I refilled her cup and made her promise to let Maren check her weekly, I meant it. And when I asked when and got the answer and did the delighted math out loud with her, every word of it was true. My family was growing. Two babies would be born into all this love within months of each other, and I was going to be an aunt twice over, and it was wonderful. Cain was considered Darien’s brother and was as much our family as Keanu was. It really was.It was wonderful.Cain gave up on the remarks and told the story instead, how Tracey had informed him over breakfast like it was a scheduling matter, how he had needed to sit down, how he had already, quietly, years ago, without telling a soul, picked out names.

LeahThe quiet held for weeks, and we let ourselves live in it.The stranger turned out to be no one. Cain’s watchers traced him through the pass and down the far valleys to a river town, where he bought passage on a barge and floated out of our lives, a man passing through the world the way people do. The report got read aloud to all of us and the whole room breathed out. The last thing we needed was another enemy right now.Keanu didn’t stand the east wall down. Nobody argued with him about it, and nobody mentioned it either, and the doubled watch just quietly became the way the wall was.Everything else softened. Anton’s reports went boring, which is the finest thing reports can be. The rogues stayed silent, the roads stayed open, and the kingdom went about the ordinary business of feeding itself and raising its children and complaining about the weather, which was doing strange small things over the castle and had been for weeks. That last part had an explanation, and her name was

Keanu“When.” Not a question. A blade laid flat. “After you had arranged my walls and my watch and my world the way you wanted them. You gave a speech in the training yard once about protecting me. I believed every word of it. Do not make me file it with the things that were true until they were tested.”That landed the way she meant it to land. Her mother’s rule, the one the coins taught her, turned around and aimed at me.“That isn’t fair.”“No,” she agreed. “It’s not. And I am saying it anyway, because you have made me stand in my own garden and find out from a wall that something is hunting me.” Her chin came up, and underneath all that level cold I could feel it through the bond, the thin bright wire of fear sh
