Sutton was already at the top of the stairs when I slammed the cabin door behind me. I took them two at a time to catch up to her. She started to grab clothes and shove them back in her suitcase.

“We’re not done with this discussion, Sutton,” I growled. “You’re not going to accuse me of something like that and just walk away. I’ve never done anything but prove to you that I don’t care whether someone is human or lycan.”

“Oh, whatever, that doesn’t mean it didn’t cross your mind the moment you saw an opportunity to screw him over,” Sutton yelled back. “You’ve hated my father from the start. You can’t accept that he was deceived, too. You refuse to believe that he didn’t know what was happening with Mason. So you’re punishing him.”

I advanced on her, pushing her bags away. “You’re right. I didn’t trust him,” I barked. “I still don’t. Not completely. When it comes to you, I probably never will. Because he may care about you, but the fact is — he has two other daughters, Sutton. I can’t i

I rushed through the trees, not really paying attention to where I was going. I was trying hard not to cry. I knew that Sutton meant well. I did. But that didn’t make it easier. Not anymore. For the first time since my diagnosis, I felt like I was making progress. I actually felt like I was coming close to some semblance of a normal life. And maybe it was because she called me out in front of Jaden. Yeah, sure, he knows about my condition and all that, but that doesn’t mean I want everyone to keep reminding him.My steps slowed. I took a deep breath and released it slowly as I began to calm down. I had finally admitted to myself that I had a crush on Jaden. But I also knew that nothing would ever happen between us. Even if I wasn’t just a sickly human, he was a lycan and a Beta. Ranking members of lycan packs always waited for their fated mates. I knew that much at least. That was enough for me to, at the very least, not make a fool of myself in front of him. Yet I still wanted to be

Lucas did speak to King Osric first thing the following morning. My grandfather tried more than once to convince me to have her stay another day or two, even if Lucas left. Eventually, he accepted that we both had responsibilities that needed our focus. Still, I didn’t want him to think we were rushing away, so we stayed through lunch and flew home late that afternoon.Once we made it back, I took a few minutes to unpack and change before I went looking for Helene. She wasn’t in our apartment or hers. Dad wasn’t back from his trip yet either. I ran into Elise in the hall and she directed me to check the gardens. That worked for me. I wanted to check the progress anyway. I met up with Tanjie and she caught me up on the restoration but I still didn’t find Helene.“I saw them heading into the woods earlier,” Tanjie told me as she reviewed her clipboard. “Her and Tarrah were heading in the direction of the shifting field.”Why would they be there? It was a nice quiet place to get away fro

As soon as the door shut behind my grandfather, I rushed back to the nursery. Going straight to the dresser, palms sweating as I lifted the little jewelry box. For a long moment I just stared at it, my mind tumbling over every half-remembered snippet of conversation and every cryptic journal entry I’d skimmed.“Sutton, what is it?” Lucas asked, coming up behind me.“I’ve seen this before,” I said. “I swear I’ve seen this before. Or heard about it maybe. I don’t know but it’s important.”“What makes you say that?” he asked, looking over my shoulder.“For one thing, it doesn’t belong in here,” I pointed out. “Look around. This clashes with all the décor. My mother put this room together meticulously. She obsessed over every detail. This is would drive her crazy. Plus, what kind of infant needs a jewelry box?”Lucas chuckled. “A royal one.”I elbowed him playfully but my focus quickly went back to the jewelry box. My fingers itched against the lid, desperate to pry it open. It didn’t bu

As we walked through the conservatory, a gentleman in a high-end suit approached us. He bowed as he addressed each of us by name. I was younger than my grandfather but still past middle-aged with salt and pepper hair that was more salt than pepper. The lines on his face showed evidence of a serious demeanor, or at least a constantly formal one.“Pardon the interruption, Your Majesty.”“Sutton, this is my valet, Gordon,” my grandfather introduced casually. “I’m sure he’s here to remind me of some urgent business I need to attend to.”“Just reminding you of your meeting this afternoon,” Gordon replied.“Yes, yes, I will be there,” the king replied, waving him off as he looped an arm in mine. “There’s one more thing I want to show you, my dear.”He led me onward with a smile. He made small talk as we strolled through the palace. It wasn’t long before we came to a stop outside a set of double doors. Reaching into his pocket, the king pulled out a key. He moved to unlock the door but pause

I was up before my alarm the next morning, feeling well-rested and ready to start the day. My time with my grandfather… my grandfather. That was still a strange term to use. Still, after our time together the day before, it was easy to start to accept that is who he was to me. I hadn’t gotten to a point where Prince Raphe felt like family yet, let alone an uncle. But it wasn’t the same with the king. After breakfast, we spent the morning exploring the palace. My grandfather walked us through the halls, telling me about all the portraits. I was amazed at how he knew the story behind every single person who adorned those walls. I was learning so much about the history of our family. I soaked it all up, memorizing the stories, the wry asides, the losses and victories that, together, made our family tree less like a dry genealogy and more like a novel in which each generation tried to correct the last one’s mistakes. Lucas was patient with my questions, and the way he sometimes caught my

“Your Majesty, I’m not sure I understand what you’re expecting from me,” I replied, feeling uneasy. “You intend to keep Prince Raphe in the dark about the investigation?”“That is exactly what I’m saying,” King Osric replied. His shoulders fell slightly and he sighed. “The truth is — my son has been keeping things from me for a while now. I’m sure he means well. I wasn’t in the best state of mind after losing Leanetta. So, I can’t blame him for wanting to treat me with kid gloves these days. But I have not abandoned my people just yet.”We started walking toward the castle again. Slowly making our way across the grounds. We followed a stone path through a courtyard lit by ornate lamps that chased away only some of the shadows of the night. A question weighed on me. I hesitated to ask it but even Rhonen urged me to press the subject.“Are you sure his intentions are good?”The king faltered beneath an ancient oak whose gnarled branches stretched skyward, turning to me as his brow knitt
