Anders jerked his arm away as one of the royal guards attempted to take him. With another snarl, he turned on his heel and headed toward the royal wing. King Osric nodded for the others to follow before turning back to me.

“We’ll talk later,” he told me with a raised eyebrow.

I nodded my acknowledgement. I wasn’t fully in the clear yet, but I wasn’t worried about my grandfather. Hannah chose to come with me and once he found out that Anders had hit her, he wouldn’t push to get her back. Regardless of the law.

Princess Nomi came to stand next to me as we watched everyone disappear around a corner.

“I hope she is safe,” she said. “It is concerning that there doesn’t seem to be any trace of her. You wouldn’t have any idea where she would go?”

I shook my head. “I don’t seem to know anything about my sister these days,” I told her.

“And you’re sure you didn’t have anything to do with her leaving?” she pressed. “Not even through Lucas? I thought he would be visiting this week.”

“The king wants to see you, Sutton,” Raphe told me. “Now.”“Just the king?” I asked anxiously.“I’m not sure,” he replied. “Come on. I’ll take you.”I swallowed, working to hide my apprehension. If it was just my grandfather, I wouldn’t be so worried. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t relish lying to him. I wasn’t looking forward to it at all and I would tell him the truth as soon as I felt it was safe. But he would understand better than the Council would if and when he found out the truth.I let Raphe guide me through the royal wing to Grandfather’s office suite next to his rooms. He knocked but didn’t wait for an answer. He ushered me inside, where I was immediately faced by my grandfather and, to my surprise, Princess Nomi. Raphe stayed, too. Leaving me standing in the center of the room with three sets of eyes staring intensely at me.The fur on the back of Nova’s neck ruffled out. ‘I don’t like this,’ she said in my mind. ‘Something feels off.’I had to agree with her. I couldn’t say

I had expected a visit, but not so soon, nor by the person on the other side of the door.“Uncle…” I was stopped as Raphe pushed his way into the apartment, shutting the door behind himself.“I’m not here to ask questions,” Raphe said abruptly, looking between Soloman and Tarrah.“I’m not sure what more we could tell you if you were going to ask questions,” I stated.“Good,” he replied. “I hope that means your alibi will standup to that statement because Anders isn’t going to let them just take you at your word.”I felt a bit uneasy that Raphe was the first to show up at my door. This was the first I’d seen him in several days. He’d been out of the palace. I hadn’t had a chance—or the nerve—to ask him about the photos of Anders and him when they were younger. I still didn’t know what their actual relationship was or if it had truly ended. I couldn’t see Raphe as the uncle I’d been getting to know these last weeks. I wasn’t sure I could trust him anymore. So, I’d keep playing it safe,

I had explained to Hannah that I needed to go back to the capital to keep her safe. I had to deny having anything to do with her disappearance. Otherwise, Anders would tear our pack apart looking for her and, thanks to lycan law, our grandfather wouldn’t be able to stop him. I told her we had everything planned out. She would never be left alone and no one would suspect where we had taken her. But that would put others in danger if I didn’t go back to keep control of the situation.Hannah’s fears eventually faded after she found out Sera would be there later in the day. However, I wasn’t sure that made things better. She just seemed angry at me now. That did make it easier to leave. She was safe. I had no obligation to stick around and deal with her mood swings. Especially, since I was exhausted. It took us a couple of hours longer to get back to the palace than it did to get Hannah to the safe house. It was midday when Tarrah and I arrived back at the palace to find a hectic atmosphe

The vehicle that had been under the tarp next to the cabin had been an old work truck. Hunter had planned out covers as handymen after finding out there was a construction site two blocks away from the warehouse we were looking into. It was both a lucky and unlucky happenstance that the work was happening when we would be there. Lucky, because it gave us a reason and opportunity to be in the area and blend in. Unlucky because it increased our chances of being seen. Still, it wasn’t the worst of situations to be in.“Time to wrap it up, boys,” the foreman called over to where Hunter and I were working on some wiring. “We’ve lost too much daylight. Pick it up in the morning.”“You got it, boss,” Hunter replied while I gave a wave over my shoulder. We were some of the last few men on the site already. That was by design for Hunter and me. We took our time wrapping up, so we were the last of the stragglers leaving the area. We headed in the direction of our truck as the foreman locked the

I paced the living room, acutely aware of Tarrah’s eyes following from her spot on the couch. Motty had stayed with Hannah. I was glad she had someone she felt comfortable with. Whatever her reasons for coming with me, I doubt it was because her opinion of me had changed all that much.“You did what you could, Sutton,” she said gently.“I should have acted sooner,” I said. “I should have taken her kicking and screaming if that’s what it took.”“And that would have left us all with a load of different problems,” Tarrah replied. “You know that. All we can…”The bedroom door opening interrupted her. My attention shot to Dr. Calahan as she came out.“She’ll be okay,” she told us.“And…”“And the pup is fine,” she assured us. “The bleeding was minor. The heartbeat is strong. I’ll get a better look with an ultrasound once we reach the final safe house, but there doesn’t seem to be any immediate danger.”My shoulders fell as I breathed a sigh of relief. “What about her other injuries?”“Also
