Tarrah and the others shifted around Lucas and me. I took a moment to admire their beautiful wolves. Lucas brushed his hand down my cheek before taking a few steps back. He shifted into his gorgeous faded blonde wolf. Giving me a quick nuzzle, Rhonen backed away, tipping his head at the others to do the same. They retreated into the darkness within seconds, completely gone from sight. Leaving me along with Nova in the night air.

I took a deep breath. Taking as much into my lungs as I could. Closing my eyes, I reached for Nova. She was there. Moving in the shadows of my mind.

‘Take off your shoes,’ she instructed.

I happily obliged, kicking them off to the side. My focus went to the sprouts of grass beneath my feet. The dirt cushioning my soles. I loved that feeling. I sensed Nova’s approval. She continued to move through the fog. I was starting to catch glimpses of her.

I waited. Holding on to my connection with her. But nothing was happening. I didn’t feel anything. Nothing changed.

“Stop, Tarrah, seriously, it hurts,” I urged, trying not to laugh so hard.Tarrah and Motty had been with me all day. Taking care of me along with Jack. I was already feeling a lot better, which made being stuck the apartment harder. Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t in any shape to be working yet. But I could have at least been at the sight overseeing the progress.Alas, I knew Lucas wasn’t going to let me leave the suite without him for a while. So, I settled for whatever distraction Motty and Tarrah could provide. Plus, Tanjie kept me informed with plenty of updates through video calls. All of them did a lot to help keep my spirits up. That in turn helped my keep my mind off of where Lucas was. He didn’t tell me where he was going when he left, but it wasn’t hard to guess.By late afternoon, I felt well enough to get out of bed and move around a bit. We moved our gathering to the kitchen where Motty and Jack started to make dinner. The apartment was filled with conversation and the arom

Sutton had a restless night. She struggled to get comfortable enough to get any decent sleep. After a few hours of watching her suffer, I insisted on bringing her home. Ultimately, she managed to talk some sense into me and stayed for the remainder of the night. It was almost noon when I finally got her home and settled into our bed. Tarrah and Motty, who had been on away on a trip, were already there and ready to start watching over her. Sutton seemed happy to have them there. Once they were settled in and Sutton was thoroughly distracted, I used the opportunity to slip away. I had guards posted outside every entrance and two inside the apartment. I wasn’t going to take any chances.I had thought that Jack was sticking close by to be with me. I was sure the whole experience had been traumatizing. But when we got home, I realized it was Sutton he was refusing to go far from. As soon as we got home, he was getting her drinks, asking if she was hungry, making sure she had everything to

I accepted that I couldn’t go into the operating room. Settling with demanding to know what the hell happened and how. No one knew where the attacker had come from or who he was. They only remembered hearing Sutton scream. They rushed to her aid to find the stranger standing over her as she shielded Jack beneath her.I grappled with the fact that Sutton had sacrificed herself for Jack. It made the situation harder to deal with. It didn’t help that I had to fight the urge to take it out on everyone there. To yell and scream about how stupid they were and how could they let this happen. But I knew it wasn’t their fault. They couldn’t have had any idea that Sutton was in any kind of danger. That was my job. And I failed.Rhonen paced heavily in my mind. The doctor finally stepped away from Sutton and started heading toward us. Jaden’s hand on my shoulder kept me from storming in.“Alpha Lucas,” the doctor said as he walked out the door, “Luna Sutton is doing just fine.” Relief washed thr

“Is everyone in agreement?” I yelled over the crowd. There was a quiet pause before a sporadic acknowledgement. I told everyone to disperse and leave the area. To go home before I called guards and started making arrests.I’d negotiated a meeting with one of the protesters and the company owner. There was apparently an issue with the working conditions in the warehouse that had caused the protesters. I hung back to speak further with the owner after everyone had gone.He took us to his office looking quite disheveled and distraught.“Okay, Warren, what the hell happened?” I asked.“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Yes, there was an accident about two weeks ago. Some kid fell while the loading crane was transferring a pallet into the warehouse. He crushed his hand but nothing permanent.”“They claimed it was from negligence,” I said.Warren sighed. “On the boys side,” he said. “He wasn’t wearing his safety harness. And I will admit the bar should have held up better, but it wouldn’t have b

I had to admit the find was pretty exciting. I definitely wanted to do whatever we could to restore the piece and bring it back to its full glory. However, we wouldn’t be able to determine how possible that would be until we got everything cleared away.“What do you think, Jack?” I asked him. “You want to give us a hand getting some of this done.”“Yeah,” he said surprisingly quick, jumping in to start pulling brush away. “How do you lose a fountain?”We got to work clearing away the overgrowth around the fountain. Tanjie entertained us with a history lesson about the estate and the grounds, including how the fountain came to be. Nova was especially fascinated with the tale. The more we uncovered, the more the story started to come to life. All along the base of the fountain were intricate carvings that told the Alpha Baron’s and his mate’s love story. It was still a beautiful tribute, even in the dilapidated state it was in. Luckily, Tanjie was confident we would be able to bring it

My days were slowly starting to find some routine. When Lucas had encouraged me to dive into this garden project, he really meant it. He helped me when he could, including with interviews and making final decisions on a contractor and suppliers. Within a week, we were ready to start clearing ground.Jack had settled in faster than we expected. He seemed to be enjoying the activities Lucas had signed him up for. He’d even started to talk to me a bit. It was still mostly short sentences, but it was more than when he first came here, which meant a lot to me. And it was good that he was feeling more comfortable because Aunt Lara’s visit had been delayed. She wouldn’t be here for a couple more days. But the three of us seemed to be adapting well enough. It was late afternoon when I was making a quick sandwich back at the apartment before returning to the field. We had cleared almost an acre already and Tanjie, my landscape contractor, said we could start mapping the area. I had just taken
