It felt like the earth had been pulled out from under me. If I hadn’t already been sitting, I was sure I would have collapsed. My mind reeled as I questioned what I’d just heard. Nova inched into my consciousness.

“That’s not possible,” I insisted. “I saw him… He had to be… You told me he had to be dead.”

“I know,” Lucas rushed. “And I believed that. But he somehow survived.”

I pulled my hand from his grasp, rushing off the lounge. I needed some space. I needed my head to stop spinning. I needed this to not be happening. My hand covered my stomach as it churned, making me feel sick. Lucas sat there, watching me.

‘Sutton…’ Nova spoke gently. I pushed her back. I don’t know why but I didn’t want her to witness this.

“How are you so calm about this?” I demanded. “He’s coming for me. He’ll kill me.”

“He’s not going to fucking touch you,” Lucas growled, shooting to his feet. “I can assure you, I am not as calm as you think. I want to rip his damn throat out. I said if I ever had the chance I would. But keeping you safe is all that matters.”

My brow furrowed. A weight fell in my gut.

“When…?” I choked out. “When did you say that?” His jaw clenched. He didn’t respond. “Lucas… how long have you known?”

“You didn’t need that nightmare hanging over your head…”

“How long?” I yelled.

“Two weeks,” he ground out.

I nearly gagged. My head racing as I tried to piece things together. I felt like everything was falling apart. Nova tried to reach me again but I ignored her.

“That’s what you were doing when you left?” I stated. “You were gone for days.”

“I met with Soloman,” he explained. “He’s been helping us look into your mother. Your stepfather told…”

“My father?” I bellowed. “You spoke to my father? What did you tell him?”

“I didn’t tell him anything about that night,” Lucas said. “He doesn’t…”

“Why did you keep this from me?” I demanded. Realization hit me. “You knew… you knew he was still alive when you announced our relationship. When you broadcast my name over the whole pack. You led him right to me.”

My entire body was shaking. It was getting hard to breathe. I couldn’t sit still but it felt like wasn’t in control of my movements either. My heart raced so face I thought it would beat out of my chest. I felt hot. Really hot. A black haze started to form at the edges of my vision. My knees felt wobbly.

“Sutton…” Lucas reached out, keeping me from hitting the floor. His hands went to my face. “We’ll leave. I’ll get you out of here. I’ll take you home. You don’t have to face him. Either of them.”

“Because I can’t, right?” I spat. “Because I’m not strong enough. Because I’m too weak.”

He began to speak but I pushed him away. I didn’t want to hear his excuses. I wanted to listen to his stupid platitudes. I just needed to get away. I stumbled to the nearest door. It led into the bathroom. Slamming it shut behind me, I fell against it, slipping to the floor as I tried to take a breath.

‘Sutton…’ Nova eased. ‘Breath, Sutton.’

‘I… I can’t,’ I managed as tears started to fall. The door at my back vibrated from Lucas pounding to be let in. ‘He… he’ll kill me. He’s coming.’

‘He won’t,’ Nova stated. ‘Lucas won’t let him. Rhonen won’t let him. No one here will let that happen.’

‘I can’t, Nova, I can’t face him,’ I sobbed.

‘Yes, you can,’ Nova said. ‘You need to. He must see how strong you are. How strong we are. Now, breathe.’

I inhaled as deeply as I could. Closing my eyes, I released it. The cold tiles began to cool my burning skin. Lucas had gone quiet on the other side of the door but I could still sense him there.

Another deep breath.

My heart started to slow and the shaking slowly subsided. My thoughts started to organize. I was working through the situation. I was still scared. Nova may have been right but I still didn’t believe I was ready for that right now. I wanted more time. But I also knew we couldn’t leave. Despite what Lucas insisted. I wasn’t safe anywhere, especially not on the road on our own.

“Baby…” Lucas’ muffled voice came through the wood. “Sutton, I wasn’t keeping this from you because you’re weak. I kept it from you because you were happy. I wasn’t going to take that from you. Not until it was necessary. I thought we had more time.”

I dropped my head back against the door.

‘He was protecting us, Sutton,’ Nova told me. ‘You know that’s all he wanted to do.’

‘I know,’ I replied.

And I did, but I was still fighting off the feeling of betrayal. Along with all the insecurities and fears I had been doing so well burying.

‘He was taking care of you, Sutton,’ Nova argued. ‘He wasn’t betraying you. Face this, Sutton. Stop trying to bury it.’

I sighed heavily. She was right. But I didn’t know how. I didn’t know how to show him that I was strong when I didn’t feel it.

Nova was strong… Lucas was strong… If there was any real strength in me, it was because of them. Because of him.

I turned, pressing a hand to the door that separated us. I knew Lucas was still there. He wouldn’t leave me. He was my mate. My real mate. If anyone could get me through this, it was him.

And I knew exactly how he could do that.

Pushing to my feet, I tore the door open. There he was. His eyes met mine with a deep longing. I closed the distance, pulling him in as my lips found his. His fingers tangled in my hair as the kiss intensified. As much as I wanted to give in to where this would go, I couldn’t yet. I broke away, speaking through the heavy breathing.

“I can do this,” I told him. “As long as you’re with me, I’m ready.”

Our lunch went longer than expected. When I finally made it back home, Lucas was out with Jack. Aunt Lara would be here in a couple of days but Lucas wanted to get Jack set up in some summer programs before she arrived. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about the situation. I didn’t want to force the kid to be around me if he didn’t want to, but it also didn’t sit right with me to keep him occupied he could feel I was purposely avoiding him.But we had some time to work all that out. Lucas still planned on having him stay in the packhouse for the whole summer. So we’d find a rhythm eventually. In the meantime, I had plenty to keep myself occupied.By that evening, I found myself hunched over my laptop and the long list of names, phone numbers, and addresses that Tarrah and the girls somehow managed to put together over a series of phone calls and messages this afternoon. I wanted to talk to Lucas before jumping into this any further, but I figured I could start making some notes.I was l

Jack emerged from his room a little before Lucas returned. He didn’t really say anything to me but he did eat the breakfast I offered him. I took that as a win. Once Lucas got home, he went to shower and get dressed for the day while Lucas told me about his conversation with Hunter this morning. I had to admit it was a relief to know my sisters were safe at home and that they were being watched over.Narya and Lorelei arrived shortly after — Narya with a basket on her and Lorelei with a large canvas bag over her shoulder. Both with huge smiles on their faces. They were up to something.“Um… I guess you two have decided where we’re going to eat,” I stated curiously.“We have,” Narya said. “You ready?”“Lead the way,” I said, starting to feed off of their excitement. We made our way through the packhouse and I honestly had no idea where they were taking me. Not until they bypassed the parking deck and started down a walking path onto the grounds.“What are you guys up to?” I pressed.“W

I called Aunt Lara first thing the next morning. She was surprised to know that Daisy and Jack had come to the city at all but she happily agreed to come and spend a few weeks getting Jack situated. The only concern was when she could make it out. She would need to work things out with Uncle Rodney and even then, it may be a week before she could manage it. We hung up with the promise of her getting back to me by the evening. It was the first days of the summer break, so Jack was still asleep. According to Aunt Lara, he likely wouldn’t emerge from his room until noon. That would give me time to get through a short workday. Jaden and Max have already offered to help keep him occupied if need be. There were also a few summer programs I would get him enrolled in.I was sending an email to a friend who ran one such program when my cell phone rang.“Danvers,” I answered without checking the number.“What the hell happened this weekend?” Hunter’s voice came through the line.“A lot,” I repl

I hated that Sutton left, but I couldn’t blame her either. Jack’s reaction at the mention of her was not lost on either of us. It made me wonder if this was the right thing to do after all. Maybe I should just call my Aunt Lara and have her come and stay with him in their usual apartment.Jack’s phone began to buzz in his hand. He looked down at the screen but didn’t do anything.“I’m guessing that’s your mother.”“Yeah,” he said with a shrug, still not picking up the call.Something was up with him. This wasn’t the kid I knew. I wanted to know what had been going on between him and his mother, but I wasn’t sure I was the best person for such a delicate subject. I didn’t want him to hate his mother but I couldn’t imagine being able to control my opinions if even half of what I suspected was going on.The buzzing stopped but immediately started again.“Jack,” I pressed him, “do you want to go home?”“No,” he said, quicker than I expected.“Do you want to stay here?”He hesitated, but u

Returning to the kitchen, Lucas took a seat on the barstool next to Jack. I hung back, leaning against the dining table so he didn’t feel crowded. I crossed my arms to keep from fidgeting with my hands and making him nervous.“Hey, Jack,” Lucas said. “It’s been a while since you’ve been to the city, huh? I bet you don’t even remember the last time.”Jack shrugged. “Not really, I guess.”“Well, I talked to your mom and…”“We’re going back home, aren’t we?” Jack interrupted. “It’s okay. I know you don’t want her around anymore. Grandpa could use my help on the farm anyway.”I saw Lucas’ jaw clench. Jack’s response bothered him but I felt his resolve solidify through our bond. This was something he needed to do.“I won’t tell you you’re wrong,” Lucas said. “ Your mother did something very unkind to someone very important to me. So, no, I’m not happy with her behavior. But that has nothing to do with you, buddy. Which is why I want you to stay here for a while.” Jack perked up when he hea

I stood awkwardly at the kitchen counter as Jack fiddled with his soda can across from me. I’d tried asking him a few questions but he wasn’t talking. At least, he wasn’t talking to me. I could guess why. There was no telling what his mother had told him about me but I doubted any of it was good.“I’m sure Lucas will be excited to see you,” I said in another attempt at small talk.Nothing. He didn’t even look up. I chewed my lip, suppressing a sigh as I tried not to think of the many possible reasons why he was here. Finally, the elevator dinged and Lucas stepped out a second later. He gave me an apologetic look as he joined us in the kitchen.“Hey, bud,” he greeted Jack, ruffling his hair before pulling him into a side hug. “I’m glad to see you. I’ve got some news for you but do you mind if I borrow Aunt Sutton for a minute before I tell you just yet?”Jack shrugged. “Sure,” he finally spoke.Lucas looked at me again and tipped his head to join him. I rounded the corner and he took m
