Asher's Pov
"Luna?"
"Expecting someone else?" She hissed coldly, slightly pushing me off the doorway as she walks inside.
"Who were you speaking with?" Her brows raised and that's when I realized, my mate was gone!
My eyes wavered across the room, scanning every corner for any trace of her, but she was gone.
I sighed, recalling I had told her to wait but she disappeared on me.
How will I find her again?
"What are you busy thinking about Asher? And without offering your Luna a seat, how bold you've become."
I flinched at her icy tone, my thumbs slowly curling into fist as I lift my gaze to meet her eyes.
I could see it all...
Her hatred for me visible in her eyes. Her lips were warped in a sneer and she scoffed as she sat on the couch.
"Someone like you shouldn't become the Alpha, you will only put our pack in danger. You don't have what it takes Asher, and it's not just because I think Kaden is better than you. It's because you are a no-bless child Asher, you shouldn't have existed in the first place. And that's why it'd be best if you live quietly, else, only the goddess knows the troubles you will cause for us."
I could only lower my head, and clenched my lips tighter. There was no way I'd let myself bicker with the Luna, I'm sure that's what she is expecting.
She wants me to break a rule, that way it'd be easier for her son Kaden to become the Alpha, but I've come to know everyone of her tricks.
Growing up in a cruel environment had left me without a dream, but when my father decided that the next Alpha would be chosen by a duel I found a reason to live daily.
It was easier expecting something than living each day with no expectations.
I've always been hated by the Luna and Kaden and partaking in the duel, only made it worse.
"Are you listening Asher?" Her voice erupts me from my reverie.
"I'm telling you what you need to do Asher, it will more disgraceful to see you fail out there, keep your dignity in check by backing out here. We could always make excuse, my son Kaden is the rightful Alpha. Remember carefully Asher, your mother stole someone else's mate to give birth to you. Don't forget that."
Her words cut deeper, as much as I tried restraining myself I was getting impatient.
The veins in my muscles was as if it were tearing my skin from within and about bursting out.
I could feel my chest tightening and the sounds of my teeth grinding filled my ears.
The story weren't true. My mother and father loved each other, well, so my mother thought.
They weren't mates but they were lovers who decided to spend the rest of their lives together.
They had made a vow of forever, yet, the moment my father found his mate he betrayed my mother and went in pursuit of his mate, not long after they got married.
The Luna was pregnant at same time my mother was, and that could only mean they met earlier before my father made it known to my mother.
The betrayal and deceit, made my life a living hell.
I have always struggled to make my place around the pack. When I was able to speak properly, I was made a messenger to run errands for every member of the pack, even the lowest ranks, Omega.
There wasn't anyone who respected me, or my mother.
She struggled so much until she died when she was sick. I gave up the zeal to live, though my Aunt whom every knows as my mother took me in, it never helped the fact that I was a no-bless child.
There was never a day that went by withouts me getting mocked at, I ran errands up until this very age.
I was going through with this duel as a aim to live, quiet frankly, I doubt I could ever win...
Not until tonight!
Meeting my mate have changed everything for me. I could feel my wolf Aaron slowly coming back to life.
It's been a decade since Aaron took control, not until tonight when it perceived our mate.
For the first time I felt alive and the joy were rushing through the marrows of my bones, a renewed strength sprouting from within me.
For my mate, I have to win the duel and become the Alpha.
I need a better life from this if I'm going to mark her mine.
My lips slowly curved into smile, forgetting the Luna was standing right in front of me.
"So I'm cracking jokes?" She questioned and instantly I sighed, clenching my lips shut just as it should be, but that didn't satisfy her.
Immediately, she struck me with her hand, and my lashes trembled. The skin on my face turned pink.
I shuddered internally as I stared at her in fury, but she sniffled, looking aggrieved as she said,
"I'm waiting to see how you disgrace yourself at the duel tomorrow. You ingrate!"
She storms out if my room. Her heels clicking the ground and making sounds as she walks away.
It slowly became faint, signifying me she was completely gone.
Just then, I felt the cold wind entitling my body. I walked to my window just so I could shut it, but then-
Hanging on the wall of the window was the scarf that was wrapped around her neck.
Thanks goddess!!
I've got something of hers that can make me find her quickly, right after I win the duel.
Lyra's PovI've always dreaded walking at night but this was the most fun I've had in my life.I could still perceive Asher's scent in my nostrils, sending radiations through my body and what should cause my organs to burn only made them sing in excitement. He isn't pompous or rude but sweet and gentle, and listening to him speak was like listening to the birds chirping in the air as they hung on trees. It was delightful!... Just as I arrived home I found my mother by the door with a grim look on her face. I instantly swallowed, my bottleneck stiffen as I walked towards her."Where are you coming from?" Her eyes flash angrily, making me considering telling a lie. I kept thinking of the best lie to come up with, but for about ten minutes I didn't know what to say other than the truth."I went to give Alpha Asher dinner!" I muttered instantly and she gave me a stern look as she walks close to where I was."Is that what took you so long? And why are you holding your mask?" I paused, c
Lyra's Pov Each step I took away from the ceremony, crushed every bones in my body. I could feel it cracking and eyes wouldn't stop dripping tears. "Lyra..." A familiar voice called and when I turned it was mother. For a moment I felt relieved, as though I could lean on her but when a blissful smirk appeared on the corners of her lips, I realized that ones again, I had thought of something impossible. "Did you think that Asher would chose you as his mate?" My hands curled into fist. I couldn't understand what was happening, did Asher not find me good enough? I turn to walk away! The howls, the screams. My heart pounded against my ribcage as I tripped over and fell on my butt. Shame surged through my body in waves as I pushed backwards away from the sound and the photograph that threaten the bones in my body. Breathing became a secondary thing ones I realized my lungs fought the movement as I tried to suck in a breath. I quickly stand on my feet about to run off but suddenl
Lyra's Pov His fair skin was flawless. He didn't have much hair, and his nails were not short or long. Though my eyes were mellowed to the ground, I could feel his gaze gawking at me. Goosebumps sprouted from my skin as I listened to my thumping heart. Asher was kneeling before me, and his voice as he asked me again if I was okay was more than soothing to my ears. I could sense the concern in his voice, but as he drew closer, I quickly erupted from my reverie as my mind raced, trying to find a way out of there. He shouldn't see my face... I counted the seconds, desperately searching for a solution. I couldn't let him see my face. I couldn't bear the possibility of him recoiling in disgust like the others when they first saw me. I tried holding his gaze for a brief moment, searching if maybe he had caught a glimpse, but his eyes remained pleasant. He hasn't seen me! A sigh of relief escaped my lips, and for a moment, a surge of hope flickered within me, urging me to escape fr
Lyra's Pov "Who are you?" My heart pounded in my chest as Devlin's piercing gaze bore into me, demanding an answer. The weight of her authority loomed over me, and I struggled to find the courage to respond. Fear coursed through my veins, as I fear of what she is capable of. Its no news how Devlin bully's the servants and maltreat every low ranking wolves of our pack. She was known for her brutality and wickedness that was far from her parents benevolence. There were rumors of how her character never replicate that of the Alpha and Luna of the pack. I hear her steps closing up to me, and shivers run through my spine as I wondered if I was going to be one of her preys. "Who are you?" She yelled. My lips quivered, but no words escaped them. My mind raced, searching for a way out. I couldn't reveal my identity, at least not to Devlin. I might end up becoming her preys for life! Never! 'Gwen!' The name caused my lips to curve into smile as I swiftly turned to stare at her, b
Lyra's Pov "Thank you!" Devlin's voice suddenly sounded like that of a child, as she smiled innocently at Asher. Her face lit up with satisfaction, a sinister smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She clasped Asher's arm tighter, reveling in her victory. I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, as fear consumed me. And just then, Asher walked away. Devlin's steps echoed in the tense silence as she walked towards me, her eyes fixated on the tears streaming down my cheeks. Her lips curled into a sadistic smile, revealing the depths of her cruelty. "Well, well, what do we have here?" Devlin's voice dripped with venomous amusement. "Seems like our little servant girl has found herself in quite a predicament. Laying on top of my mate? How bold of you." I tried to muster the strength to respond, to defend myself, but my voice faltered in the face of her relentless aggression. Fear coiled gripped me as I avoided her gaze. Devlin suddenly laughed, her eyes staring at m
Lyra's Pov My stomach grumbled loudly, the hungry sounds echoing hurting everyone of my intestines. And only then did I perceive the scent of the delicious meal my mother had prepared for Devlin. I had thought it was just fruits, but I was wrong. A flask was beneath the basket, and she carefully covered it up with fruits. It's delicious scent taunting me mercilessly. Tears welled up in my eyes as the reality of my hunger set in. I had been working tirelessly, completing my chores without complaint, yet there was nothing for me to eat. I mustered up the courage to approach my mother, my voice filled with desperation. "Mother, I've been working all day, and now there's nothing for me to eat. Please, I'm starving." She turned to me, her expression filled with disdain. "Starving? You dare complain after all the trouble you've caused? You should be grateful for the scraps that fall from the table of Devlin." "But Mother, I-" "Silence!" she bellowed, her voice cutting through th
Lyra's POV My heart was racing extremely fast, I could hardly think of anything at the moment other than the fear that Devlin might have shot me dead. But if I was actually dead, then how come I had my consciousness and how was I still breathing? I still could not move from where I was standing, however, I could only open my eyes and see for myself what was happening around me, if really Devlin's arrow was stuck in my stomach. My eyes opened and luckily for me, I was still alive and well, however, the wind was cold, especially against my arm that seemed to have been doused with liquid. The liquid was warm against my skin and I could feel goosebumps around the area where the liquid touched. My senses were running wild because I didn't have to think deeply into it to be certain that in fact, I had been injured there. Luckily for me, the arrow did not pierce my arm, but rather it gave it an unsightly graze. The skin was torn open and the flesh around it was hanging like it was mere p
Lyra's POV Somehow, Devlin succeeded in convincing Asher about the game that she thought would be especially fun. They didn't even bother to take us back into the mansion to continue this charade indoors but rather, we were told to kneel on the earth in the woods and apples from God knows where were placed on our heads.. It all happened so fast, minutes ago we were busy assisting those who were hunting and also, specifically, I was getting shot at but immediately we found ourselves on our knees as targets for Devlin to practice her aim. Just like me, there were four other servants who were on their knees and an apple on each of their heads. Devlin was standing in front of us and a few other people had gathered to watch the show. Asher was there and so was Steven and others that I was yet to get acquainted with. Devlin was busy conversing with Asher and Steven about something while the rest of us maintained our positions as target practice for the princess. "This is so inhumane,"
