My breath catches in my throat, my hands gripping his shirt.

I pull away first– Lucian's smirk vanished.

My emotions are all over the place.

Maybe I was confused. Furious.

Shit.

My lips still tingled, my pulse was a drum in my ears, but my brain– oh, she was screaming.

It was the kind of kiss the scorches.

Possessive. Undeniable. A mark without teeth or blood.

My face burns, and I hate how much of me wanted to melt into it.

Ethan opens his mouth to speak, but I step back, trembling fingers brushing my lips.

“We'll talk later.” My voice comes out brittle.

What the hell was that?

No– why the hell was that?

That kiss wasn't for me. Not really. It wasn't need. It was a claim, a response to Lucian's jab, a flash of ego wrapped in his lips and pressure and heat.

Lucian's gone in a blink– vanishing with a crooked smile. He wanted this.

“Don't do that again.” I murmur, voice low but even– I meant it.

Ethan looks like I slapped him. But good. Maybe I should have.

Then I turn and walk away.

LYRA'S POVShe turns startled, eyes wide, guilt smeared across her face like she'd been caught red-handed.“What are you doing?”Clara blinks at me, her hands still clutching one of the drawers half-open. Her eyes are wide, innocent– too innocent.“Oh, Luna.” She says with a startled laugh that didn't quite reach her eyes. “You're back! I– I didn't hear you come in.”“Clearly.” I murmur flatly, folding my arms. She steps back from the nightstand like it had bitten her, smoothing her dress down with shaking hands. “I was just… I came to say hi. I heard you were back, and I wanted to see for myself. I didn't mean to snoop or anything– I was just looking for a brush or something to fix my hair before you came in.”A brush. In my drawer.I raise my brow, not bothering to hide my disbelief. “You came to say hi. But instead of, I don't know, sitting on the couch or knocking on the door as anyone would have, you started going through my stuff?”“I swear, it's not what it looks like.” Clara s

LYRA'S POVEthan's grip on my hand is firm, but gentle, like he knew I might spook and vanish into thin air if given the chance. He leads me past the training fields and down one of the lesser-used paths by the gardens, our steps crunching softly over the gravel as the sun filters through the trees above us.“I don't bite, you know.” He says over his shoulder, flashing me an annoyingly charming half-smile that surprises me.“I mean, you kind of do.” I mutter, just loud enough. He chuckles. “Only when provoked.”Goddess. I needed to focus. Not get lost in his voice. Or his arms. Or his jawline… definitely not the jawline.Focus woman…We finally stop before a small stone cottage tucked behind the pack greenhouse. Vines curled up the sides of the walls, and wildflowers had claimed whatever space the stones didn't.“I used to sneak off here when I was younger.” Ethan says, pushing open the creaky door and waving me in. “Before I was Alpha. Before… everything.”I step inside, blinking aga

LYRA'S POVI can't even scream. Talk. Or come up with a befitting reaction to the mess left in my room. What was I to make of this?Someone had invaded my personal space. Again.Just like back at Ravenwood when they had stolen the note. Broke into my room and left the mystery chest. And now someone else was at silvermoon, sneaking into my space and making me uncomfortable. With a heavy heart and trembling hands, I quietly clean up the place.I couldn't even tell Dad. What difference would it make if I did? Who knew for a sure he didn't already know about it– the possibility of this sabotage being a part of his plans to stop my haunt was high. And the greater heights they were willing to go to keep me away, made me ravel with even more curiosity.I was going to find out– I'd get answers to everything. Didn't matter who stood in my way…~~~~~Hours later, I'm all packed up and headed off, leaving Mae– the younger maid and Amanda's friend, to inform dad.I'm back on my way with the Raven

LYRA'S POV“What do you mean?” His voice is low– too low.“I've been receiving some things… messages – cryptic notes. Nothing direct, but bits and pieces here linking back to mum.” He clears his throat at this, pulling his hand out of my hold.My frown deepens as I rise to my feet, crossing my arms over my chest in defiance.“There's nothing more to your mother's passing. She died a noble death– trying to protect silvermoon.” He pauses with a deep sigh, running a hand across his face.“Whoever is doing all that is trying to play games with your mind– very cruel ones.” He finishes, and I let out a scoff in disbelief. It was so clear that he was lying to me. The way his voice was unusually low– the smile that he was forcing across his face that didn't meet his eyes– the way his hand laid by his side on the bed kept fidgeting.“Why are you refusing to tell me what you know Dad? First– Amanda ran away. Now– you're lying right to my face.” My voice shakes, tears clogging up in my throat.

LYRA'S POVI had to admit, it felt good to be back, even it wasn't exactly the warmest welcome.Silvermoon's halls felt even more cold and foreign now, the place where I had once been a rejected daughter of– was still the place I could barely stand. It had only been a week since I had arrived, but it felt like a lifetime. The progress I had made was slow but steady. I'd spent the better part of my days combing through documents, trying to find any clue, any scrap of evidence that might shed light on what happened to my mother. The whispers and the rumors were everywhere, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something bigger was brewing in the shadows– big enough to have Amanda fleeing.I felt more alone than I had ever felt in my life. But the strangest thing yet? Every night, when the sky darkened and the stars took their standing by the moon, I found myself thinking about Ethan. His face haunted me– like an echo in the back of my mind. We'd barely spoken since I left Ravenwood, but

ETHAN'S POVThe silence that followed the massacre, days later, was deafening, but it wasn't the kind of silence that brought peace. It was the kind that gnawed at your nerves, poking at every crack in your mind, making everything feel fragile.“The dead aren't just bodies– they feel like a message.” Julian mutters as we sit in my study.I nod in agreement. It was indeed a message – one I couldn't quite read, but I knew enough to understand its weight. We were trying to go over some reports that tied back to the un-tackled matters at hand. The major reason behind his visit to Ravenwood in the first place, forced aside for now.“The more I think about it, the more it doesn't add up.” I muse, focusing my attention on the report Dan had compiled in of that day. “No signs of struggle. No scent trail. Just bodies, lifeless and grotesque in their finality. One heart ripped out.” I groan, running a hand across my face in frustration.“The rogues aren't this organized. Whoever did this, has e
