Grocery

Esther’s home was a twenty minute walk from school. She used this period of time to observe those around her and draw ideas inside her head that she would never get the chance to explore.

Esther’s brother, Luke, went with Amy in the car. The car was brought for Esther and Amy to use together. However, because Amy went to a lot of social gatherings, Amy used it on her own, and Esther didn’t have a driver’s license.

Because of how awkward it felt with her siblings, Esther chose to travel by foot.

As always, Esther arrived to an empty home. Both of her parents were career driven, and as one of the most sought-after lawyers, they were barely at home. Even when they were, Esther had no part of their attention.

She knew her parents were disappointed at her. The timid her had no voice and would let anyone easily overpower her. The subservient side of hers was seem as shame to her parents. Esther did feel guilt for turning out this way, but there was nothing that could be done about it.

Esther and Amy used to have a close relationship when they were younger. However, incidents occurred that caused a gap between them. Esther felt regretful at times for that, but seeing how Amy couldn’t care less about her, Esther no longer delved on the subject.

Luke was a year younger than her and had a lively personality. He laughed and talked a lot. Esther, on the other hand, didn’t have the ability to carry on a conversation. Moreover, Esther felt as if he was ashamed of her.

Therefore, Esther didn’t try to talk to him.

In the end, no matter how lonely this gets, she was fine living in this bubble of her own.

°°°

The weekend had arrived, and today was the eighteenth birthday of Asher. That explained why Amy was clamoring the entire day about getting dressed, and the end of it was gorgeous.

Dressed in an oversized hoodie, Esther was seated on her couch, hugging her legs and drinking coke, when she saw her sister walk down the stairs. Dressed in a black dress, Amy was the definition of stunning.

At times, it was difficult to believe they were identical twins.

Standing by the stairs, Amy was talking to someone on her phone. This is when Esther felt her stomach growl, and she patted on her stomach before getting up.

Recalling that there were no groceries at home, she decided to go out to get them. No one in this house cooked or ate homemade meals other than her. Esther had nothing against restaurants; she simply loved cooking for herself where she could adjust the taste according to her requirement.

As Esther was tying her shoes, Amy questioned, “Where are you going?”

Esther turned back. The reason Esther felt intimidated by Amy was due to how charismatic the girl was. All she needed to do was stand somewhere to get others be attracted to her, and her tone was usually assertive.

“To get the groceries,” Esther stated.

“On your own? You sure you wouldn’t be getting abducted or run over by a car on your way?” Amy mocked.

“I will be careful,” Esther responded.

“Right. That’s why, you were mugged last time,” Amy commented.

Esther pursed her lip into a thin line and looked at the ground.

A groan escaped from Amy’s lips as she ran her hand through her hair, and she voiced out, “Is it necessary for you to go today?”

Esther raised her head to look at Amy whilst contemplating on an answer. At the end, she decided to not create trouble for Amy. Nothing would happen if she didn’t cook for the night.

But before she could give an response, Amy stated, “You are giving me that look again! Ugh! Fine, I must be cursed to have you as my sister. I will take you, but you do that grocery in less than minutes. Is that alright?”

Even though Amy spoke to her harshly and ignored her for most part, there were times Amy showed her kindness, and this made Esther give Amy a small smile. Even though today was an important event for Amy, she was willing to do this for Esther.

“Thank you,” Esther expressed.
