16 - BenShe has my hand and I am blindly following her. My heart is about to beat out of my chest and I am a mix of loving and hating the feeling. My whole body is under her control. I shake my head and try my best to pull my hand away without making a scene in front of all of the people I know are still watching us.“Just walk with me.” She hisses under her breath. “This is the only way any of them will let us walk away. It’s the worst kept secret in my pack that we are mates and if we look like we are trying to work with the bond, they will leave us alone and we can search how we want.”“Elara, stop, this isn’t safe.” I try to pull my hand back again. We have to be far enough away by now. She doesn’t let me go. We continue marching into the forest. “Elara, wait. Wait!” I say more forcefully, digging my heels in and retracting my arm so she stumbles back into me. “This isn’t safe. We need back-up.”“What we need is to figure out if anything is in that cave. There haven’t been any mo
15 - ElaraIs it possible to want to kill so many people all at the same time? My father and Ben have been jockying for the top spot on my annoyance scale for weeks now. Add to that Richard, Jeff and Sebastian have all been hovering right along side them. My dad’s leadership team has never followed me before now, never given the impression they wanted to follow or protect me. My parents are their focus, as they should be, and none of them have kids that can do the job yet. Sebastian’s son is only a year old. He will more than likely be my kids’ Delta, not mine. That is, if I ever have kids. My mate might not live that long.“We need to go. Junior is expecting us and you wanted to run across the water front.” Ben barely looks up from the map he is studying. It’s been almost two months. This is where he spends most of his time, in my study looking at maps. I don’t know what he’s going to get from them after this much time. I say nothing as I turn to walk out of the room.My wolf’s feet
14 - BenSeriously! I can’t taking with this woman. This is the third day in a row she has refused, and then fought me on her protection detail. She’s not wrong about needing to coordinate with Malcom Jr., but Junior has a team, his team, his age. She’s flying blind and alone on purpose, and I don’t understand. To top it all off my wolf is reacting to her stubbornness…by wanting to step in and be her protection detail twenty-four seven.“Jer, help me out here. She’s driving me crazy. Send me home. Send me to Junior’s. I don’t care, just get me out of here.” I am running my fingers through my hair…again. It is possible I will start ripping it out soon. I just returned from seeing Elara to check on her and her leg. Because my wolf can’t go two hours without checking in. She healed in a couple days, but it’s sore, I know it’s sore and she refuses to rest it longer or keep a team with her. She’s going to get someone else hurt with her reckless actions. I noticed, once again, that Jax and D
13 - Ben“GO! NOW!” I am thrown out of bed by the force of my wolf’s command.“What! What the hell is going on?”“She’s in danger! Go. Now!”I look around. Elara’s scent lingers in the air, but he’s right, she isn’t here, hasn’t been for at least half an hour. F*ck!I link the guys and take off. They will be able to find me. I’m too furious to wait for them. Something is wrong with her, and if there isn’t, there will be when I find her. I can’t believe that after everything we saw in the last two days, she still went out for a run without any protection. And now she’s hurt.I let my wolf lead; he seems to have a way to track her, and I’m not asking questions right now. I scout through his eyes as we thunder through the forest. I can smell the scent of water getting closer. Of course, she wanted to check Jeremiah’s theory about these rogues using the water to transport something. Well, she’s been proven right.“Will you shut up?! I can’t concentrate with all your b*tching. She’s hurt, y
11 - ElaraI will regret even thinking this if any if them ever learn of it, but I am glad my dad brought the Silver Crescent guys in. They are all really smart and the teamwork is amazing. My problem here is that the beta never had kids. Jeff had a family once, but something happened that no one talks about. Even my dad won’t tell me, or he doesn’t know. Sebastian and his mate just had a pup, but he’s only a year old. I have never known the kind of close friendships these guys have as a leadership team. The closest thing I have to that is Jaxon and Devon. Even Rayna has been very helpful, as an alpha born female and now the future luna of the Crescent Moon pack, she has been training to lead her whole life, similar to myself, but her training has been more general not knowing who her mate would be and what her role would be as a mate.“So,” Jeremiah speaks up, looking up from the map of my pack lands and the surrounding borders. “I think the problem is actually here,” he points to a
12 - Elara“This was a bad idea. I should go.” I make a feeble attempt to get out of the cage his arms and the door have me in.“Where are you going to go? Is there someone else you would rather stay with?” He doesn’t close the distance, this isn’t flirting. The heat of his irritation is always palpable, a constant presence, but it’s turned up now.“No, I… uh…This just isn’t a good idea. I’ll figure it out.” I turn once again to get out of his non-hold. I blink and realize other than pulling me into his room, he hasn’t touched me at all. He’s staring into my eyes, searching for something. Those chocolate brown eyes are deep and intense. He takes a deep breath, when he lets it out it fans over my face and I can feel some of my crazy flyaways brush my cheeks. He mus see something in my expression.“It’s fine, Elara.” He pushes back from me, “You can stay. Just give me a minute to finish up.” With that he walks away. The view from the back is just as enticing as the view from the front. A
