Pain.
I knew it was there. It was coursing through my body faster than the blood was pumping out of my wound, but all I felt was numb.
I stared up at him.
I didn’t recognize him at that moment. It was like I was seeing the true face of my mate, my husband, for the first time at that moment, and I didn’t understand how I missed it.
The signs were there. It’s not like this came out of nowhere, but like everyone else, I failed to see it for what it was. But it was there. I was so blinded by justifying and making excuses for his shortcomings that I didn’t see what was coming.
The pain I was suffering most in my chest wasn’t from the silver ceremonial dagger that my mate pierced through my heart, but the pain of the betrayal that my mate was the one who willingly stabbed me.
My mate, the man whom I was supposed to follow blindly, trust and support, was the one who smiled down at me now while my heart struggled to continue to pump blood through my clammy body.
I felt it.
I knew I was slipping.
I was fading away with each struggling push of my heart, and I felt my life slowly slipping away from me.
It was him. He chose to do this.
For what? Greed.
There he stood. Smiling down at me as though we had just shared a meaningful, loving moment, and not that he didn’t just betray me, our bond or the Goddess’ plan for us.
Aiden Harris.
“Frankie,” Aiden crouched down next to me. He reached out and gave my cheek a light stroke of his finger, tucking back my sweat-matted hair from my face. It was almost insulting. The fu.ck does it matter if my damp bangs cover my face, his fu.cking dagger was sticking out of my chest. Heaven forbid I have a hair out of place. I could feel the rage within me begging to break free, but it was depleting my already drained energy.
“You are so beautiful. I wish things could have been different, but sacrificing you is the key to me getting everything owed to me.”
I hear his words. I hear his excuses, but I want none of them.
I was his Goddess-gifted mate; he wouldn’t get another after this betrayal. Why would he choose to sacrifice her wolf's happy ending for a title?
The betrayal filled my wound. It slithered in the same way she slithered into mine and Aiden’s relationship. The betrayal had been lingering on the surface, waiting for its chance to get inside, and now it succeeded. It was an incurable infection, eating away at the bond that held us together.
“I have a confession before you pass out, Frankie.” His eyes filled with a brief moment of guilt. “I was never your mate. You were wolfless and believed the whole thing.”
“Why?” I spoke in barely a whisper, the air was expelling faster than I could bring it in.
“Because I couldn’t let him have you. I saw it before anyone else, and he took something that mattered to me, so I took someone who mattered to him. All is fair in love and war, don’t you agree?”
My eyes widened.
I knew it. I knew it didn’t feel right, but being wolfless, I also knew I wouldn’t feel the same pull the way wolves would. But I knew, deep down, that we would never connect.
That would also explain why his wolf isn’t fighting him at this moment. I was never his true mate, so his wolf isn’t losing anything of real value.
The cut more.
I wasted years forcing myself to accept someone I barely liked, much less loved, because of a fake bond?
If I had known more, I would have asked better questions. If I were more honest when Aria or Luna Margie pressed for information about what was happening in my marriage, I wouldn’t be suffering here in this cabin, alone, with two homicidal wolves.
I was foolish. I was only now realizing how foolish I had been. I was so focused on finding a reason why we were paired that I missed the signs that maybe we were never meant to be paired at all.

NARRATIVE POV“Let me out! This is an order from your Beta!” Aiden growled in a low, threatening tone. “Do you not understand that my wife is out there, injured and potentially dying?”Aiden played his role well, and the guards exchanged glances. A growing divide was emerging within the pack. Many thought Aiden was guilty, but cleverly covering up his actions, while others thought he was being framed and falsely accused, while the rogues who really harmed Frankie had managed to escape unseen.“Bullsh.it!” Gamma Ryner stepped into the cement corridor of the holding cells. His eyes were deadly, locked onto Aiden. The guards noticed the look in their Gamma’s eyes; he looked as though he were standing before his greatest enemy and not the pack's Beta.“Ryner, look, I need you to hear me out. I need to be let out of here. Frankie is out there. She needs me!” Aiden’s eyes began to well up, and tears started to fall.Ryner scoffed. “You play the victim well, Aiden. You’ve been doing it your
NARRATIVE POVThere was a heavy pause. Ryner knew they were most likely thinking of the times Frankie had asked them for a divorce as well. It was never this extreme, but there were always reasons. Aiden never treated Frankie right, and the Alpha family kept Frankie in the marriage in hopes that Aiden would calm down and focus on the future in a positive light.“Alright, we are coming home. I need you to gather some guards and isolate Oliver until we can get back. Lock Aiden up as well. We need to follow the steps according to the law, and if Aiden is our number one suspect, lock him up. Keep Oliver away from everyone. I will reach out to Aria; she would have felt this pain, as they performed a binding ritual as teens to become blood sisters. This will affect her much like you, but she needs to finish those exams before returning. Take care of the pack, we will be there as soon as we can.” Alpha Tom's voice was different now. It was heavy with emotion; it was clear that Alpha Tom was
NARRATIVE POVThe pain was crippling. Oliver bent over, bracing himself with his palms pressed onto his trembling knees.A pack member's bond to the pack had just snapped, and Ranked members would always feel the departure worse than any other pack member, but an Alpha feels the tear in their heart.Especially when it was someone closer to them, and Oliver knew immediately that it was Frankie. The intensity of the pain told him that she didn’t simply disband from the pack; he felt her life snap. She died.Ryner rushed into the office, not bothering to knock. His eyes were puffy and red, his hair was a mess, and his face was flushed and tear-stained. He felt his sister die through the family bond and needed to get Oliver to search for her. Although the pain coursing through him told him that she was dead, he needed to find her. He refused to believe that his sister was gone. They may have been distant with each other over the years, but he still cared for Frankie deeply, much deeper th
FRANKIE POV“I haven’t committed any crimes, so no, I do not understand my presence here. I was expecting the Meadow. That is where good shifters go. Right?”Dark Sister smiles and nods. “Indeed. And you are also correct, that is where you would be going, but first, we need to settle up a few things.”I felt my brow furrow at her words. What could I possibly need to settle up with her?“Are you angry, Francis? You called out for vengeance with your last breath. I have answered your calls before you were sent to the Meadow. Do you still wish to claim vengeance over what you’ve lost? There is so much loss for you in your short life; there is the death of your wolf, the abuse, the neglect, the isolation, the murder.”I paused. Is this something that I really wanted? Would it not be better to walk away and let things lie where they fall, simply? I was no longer in pain, and Oliver made it clear that death was the option for me. No one has cared to see my pain and my depression since gradu
FRANKIE POVDarkness surrounds me.But I was breathing? That can’t be. I knew I was dead. I remember the knife plunged into my chest. I recall everything Aiden and Alice said to me. I remembered, like a fool, being led to the cabin we once visited as pups, and Aiden telling me that if we couldn’t patch things up that night, then he would agree to a divorce. Why else would I have come in the first place, otherwise?I was so naive.Looking at everything now, I realized just how foolish my thoughts were. Why would my abusive husband need me to come to a secluded location to work on our marriage? Otherwise, he would agree to a divorce. How could I have fallen for such an obvious ploy?I shook my head in disappointment and regret. Was this the afterlife? Why was it so dark? I knew I didn’t commit any crimes or sins against the Goddess, so why wasn’t I welcomed into the bright and warm Meadow?“So many questions for such a short moment of time. Do you always over-analyze moments in your lif
NARRATIVE POV ( The day before...)“When your brother kills me, I hope that guilt eats you alive. I never want to see you again after I escape him and this fu.cking pack! I never wanted this marriage, but you're too much of a child to put your pettiness aside. Goodbye Oliver. I will never come before you again!”At those words, Frankie pushed past her brother, who was still confused about what was happening, but also concerned and couldn’t take his eyes off his sister's bruised and swollen face.“Frankie, what happened? Did Aiden do this to you?”Frankie stopped briefly and chuckled darkly. “Sure did, but don’t worry, your fearless Alpha supports this behaviour. Death or disbandment are my only options listed to escape my abuser.”Frankie turned on her heels and stormed up to her shared suite with Aiden on the Beta floor.Ryner’s face hardened, and he turned to Oliver for answers.“You are seriously alright with my sister walking around with half of her face like that? What happened t
