Somehow, I’d adopted a grumpy stray cat.

But instead of a cat, it was a wolf... and instead of a wolf, it was actually the Alpha King.

Two weeks went by since the initial night Alistair showed up on my doorstep. And, just like a stray cat you feed once, he kept showing up regularly ever since then. At first, he went back to pretending like he wasn’t interested in coming inside, but it only took a few days for him to give that act up. Soon, it just became the normal routine.

  • The Alpha's Villainess   Chapter Fifty-Six

Scarlett shuddered in anticipation, enjoying herself as she waited for that moment he would kiss her. She didn’t really care for him. That much was obvious. This entire act of hers was for her own entertainment. Just to see if he would do it. Something for her to laugh at later and use against me.The whole time this was happening, I kept screaming inside, pleading with the void that held me captive, but it never relented. I was held in place, unable to do anything except spectate. He trailed his face along her cheek, his hot breath warming her skin as he continued to move upwards...And as he finally came to a stop at her ear, it was then that his grip on her tightened. More forceful. Almost as if he were trapping her in place.Scarlett gasped, not expecting the sudden violent strength, but Alistair spoke over her. A voice so dark that even I flinched from hearing it.“...Fuck off, Scarlett.”With that, he pushed her away.At being caught, Scarlett began to laugh, having nothing else

And, just like a stray cat you feed once, he kept showing up regularly ever since then. At first, he went back to pretending like he wasn’t interested in coming inside, but it only took a few days for him to give that act up. Soon, it just became the normal routine.I’d wake up around midnight and find him already on the porch waiting. He never knocked, but I think that was because he was worried about accidentally waking up Scarlett instead. He’d make me a fire, and we would just talk for a few hours. Sometimes I’d tell him a story, just a movie or book I’d read back in my world, and sometimes he slept here. The palace was always busy, and I think he liked having somewhere he could go to get away from it all. Even if that was just for a few hours.I also learnt a little about

“...And, so, she clicked her shoes together, spoke the magic words, and when she woke up, she was back home with her family. Like nothing had ever happened and it was all just a dream. The end,” I finished.I’d been telling the story to Alistair for a long time. Long enough that I noticed his breathing become even, a sign that he might have fallen asleep. I’d kept going despite this, continuing to speak until the end, but now I wondered if he really had drifted off.I leaned in closer, inspecting his face for any sign that he might still be awake. He seemed so peaceful as he laid there, the lines from stress having relaxed. He looked so... innocent. Like he wasn’t someone capable of killing a person with his bare hands, or able to order thousands of people into doing whatever he wanted.“Why didn’t the good magical Luna simply not kill the bad one? Why did she need the wolfless girl to do it for her?” he then asked, making me jump back into my armchair.Immediately, my heart began rac

The entire forest around us grew quiet, almost as if nature itself was responding to the loss. No one spoke a word. No one moved a muscle. Just stunned silence filled the air.Was I meant to say something? To offer words of sympathy? I was probably the last person he wanted to hear from, the face I wore a reminder of who stole his father from him.Instinctively, I’d raised a hand to touch his shoulder in support, but I quickly recalled it before he noticed. This wasn’t about me or what I could offer him. There was nothing I could do to make this situation any easier for him.Nevertheless, the news hit me hard too. I’d tried so hard to, not only warn Thaddeus that this might happen, but to save him too. Yet somehow, despite my best efforts, it had still been partially my fault that it ended this way.Thaddeus was the first person to look at me like I wasn’t Scarlett. Without even needing to explain anything, he’d given me a chance. He’d seen the good in me when everyone else only saw

I sat on the couch, legs curled up into my chest as I stared at the unlit fireplace in front of me. Memorising the stones... the smudges of charcoal... the way the cracks split in different directions... doing anything I could to stay busy... to not fall asleep. To not let my head keep bobbing down.......To stop my eyes closing for a few seconds at a time.......To not let my thoughts get carried away, noticing how the stones reminded me of the tavern and that one time Hazel had told me about...........About...................A..b.....................And, suddenly, I wasn’t sitting on the couch anymore. No... I was by the front door with something held tightly in my hand... standing in the exact spot one would wait if trying to surprise someone...I didn’t get a chance to properly process what was going on before the door then opened.“Hello...?” Alistair’s voice called out.Scarlett instantly moved. The second he stepped into the living room, she lunged herself forward, aiming a

“How...? How is that even possible?” Alistair asked. His aggression and anger were slowly thawing as he processed what I told him, learning something I was sure he never expected to hear.“I-I don’t know,” I quickly answered. “One moment I was eating a snack in my kitchen, the next moment I was dead and waking up as Scarlett.”“And... what? She’s in there? You’re both... there?”“Yes. Now we are.”“What do you mean ‘now’? She wasn’t before?”“She woke up four days ago. Before that, she was in a coma or... something. I really don’t know. She was drowning in the lake back in Easthaven and that’s when I took her place. I had no idea she was going to eventually wake up. Honestly, I thought she’d died.”“So... these past few weeks... the person I’ve actually been talking to....”“Was me,” I finished, feeling like a weight was being lifted. “Me, Natalie. It was me who ran away from Easthaven after trying to help Aurora. Me who saved you in the forest from the rogues, and it was me who was c

“What the f....,” I whispered to myself, dropping slowly to my knees in disbelief. It was surreal to see the doll-like girl mimic my actions. When I lifted my hand, so did she. When my mouth moved, so did hers. Like some sort of messed up trick room. She was nothing like the body I was used to. Wit

The darkness only lasted for a moment. When I opened my eyes next, I was in water. Floating slowly down to the bottom of a void as bubbles filled my vision around me. Almost beautiful in the way they moved, dancing in the small light that came from above. Was this heaven? If true, it was kind of di

“Please...,” Scarlett choked out between sobs. “Please don’t kill me. I’ll leave you alone, I swear. I’ll run away as far as possible and never come back.”But it was too late for apologies. For years, I’d suffered at Scarlett’s hands. I was beaten, starved and abused by that entire pack growing up

“You should be in bed resting,” Liam said, holding my hand tenderly in his.I looked down at where he touched me and felt bile fill my mouth. I knew what those hands had done. I’d seen the results with my own eyes now. It was truly disgusting.“I’m fine, really,” I assured, forcing a smile on my lip
