FAZER LOGINClara’s POV
I was in outfit number five, standing in front of my closet mirror, silently negotiating with my own reflection. Nothing felt right. The jeans that fit fine everywhere else dug in at my waist the second I sat down, and the top that actually looked decent just felt wrong for a frat house basement.
There was no version of tonight where I showed up looking like I had it together.
So I gave up. Swapped the jeans for sweatpants, the going-out top for the same soft tank I'd slept in for most of the week, and twisted my hair up into a bun that wasn't cute-messy so much as actually messy pieces sticking out at angles no amount of hairspray would fix.
My roommate, Nadia, pushed the door open mid-text, glanced up, and stopped short. "Why are you still in pajamas?"
"I'm not going," I said, chewing the inside of my cheek.
"Rue. It's literally week one. You have to have some fun sometime."
"I don't have anything to wear."
"Borrow something of mine."
I gave her a flat look. We both knew exactly how that would end me splitting seams she'd never forgive me for, stretching her leggings into something closer to a tarp. Hard pass.
She sighed, dramatic as ever. "You'd look fine in literally anything."
"Everyone here looks like they run marathons for fun, Nadia. I don't want to stand in a crowded basement feeling like the before picture."
She rolled her eyes but didn't push further. I turned back to my laptop and scrolled through my inbox, landing on a new message addressed to the whole class.
Everyone
Tonight's reading will be followed by a short five-question check tomorrow morning. Come prepared. Email me with questions. Professor Vance"Nobody's checking outfits at a frat party," Nadia said, already halfway out the door. "Half of them will be too drunk to notice what anyone's wearing. You show up, they see your face, that's it, you're golden. Come on."
I grabbed my textbook off the desk instead. "Next time. I've got a reading check tomorrow."
"Who assigns a quiz on literally the second day?"
"Professor Vance."
Her eyebrows shot up. "Wait, you have Vance? Isn't he unfairly attractive to a professor?"
"You know him?" I asked, genuinely curious, since as far as I knew she wasn't even taking a mythology class this semester.
She hesitated a beat too long before answering, opening her mouth and then closing it again. "Saw him around. Heard about him from a friend in his class." She was already backing toward the hallway. "Anyway, have fun with your homework. You're coming next time, no excuses. Bye!"
The door clicked shut, and I let my shoulders drop, exhaling. That had gone smoother than expected. She usually didn't give up on dragging me anywhere that easily.
I didn't let myself dwell on it. I sat down, cracked open the textbook, and studied straight through until close to midnight. Nadia still wasn't back, though she'd warned me she probably wouldn't be until well past two. I told myself that was just what people did in college. Stayed out. Lived a little. I wasn't sure I believed it.
I'd just shut my book and climbed onto my bed when my phone buzzed with a new email.
Rue
Have you come across this one? [link] Rowan VanceI bit down on a smile before I could stop myself, cheeks warming for absolutely no reason I wanted to examine too closely. He hadn't signed off as "Professor Vance" the way he had in the class-wide email earlier. Just his name. His actual, first name.
Rowan Vance.
Emailing me. After midnight.
It probably meant nothing. It was probably some standard thing professors did, sending reading suggestions to students who seemed interested. But the idea that he might've been sitting somewhere thinking about our conversation late at night did something reckless to my pulse. I pressed my legs together without meaning to, the same way I had earlier that afternoon watching him jog across the quad, breathless and flushed, right before he'd caught me staring.
I clicked the link before I could talk myself out of it. It opened with a book called Bound in Ash, focused on Hades and the myths surrounding his exile, a version of the story I hadn't come across in any of my usual reading.
I made a mental note to grab it from the library the next morning, then typed out a reply before I could second-guess it.
Professor Vance
added it to my list right now. Thanks for the recommendation. Best, RueI stared at the sign-off, deleted it, retyped the exact same thing, and stared at it again. Too formal? Not formal enough? He hadn't bothered being formal with me, but I didn't know what that meant, exactly, or if it meant anything at all. I hit send before I could spiral further and set the phone face-down on my stomach, staring up at the ceiling with an idiotic smile I couldn't quite shake.
Here I was a first-year who'd skipped her first college party to lie in bed getting butterflies over a late-night email from a professor twice her age. It was a fantasy with an expiration date built right into it, but it still felt nice. Felt like the kind of attention I hadn't gotten much of anywhere else in my life.
I switched off my lamp and had just closed my eyes when the phone buzzed against my stomach again. I lifted it, angling the screen away from my face so the brightness wouldn't blind me, and went completely still.
I think you'll like it. It's one of my favorites. Rowan
No last name this time. No title. Just Rowan.
Something in my chest did a slow, stupid flip. I hugged the phone to my chest, grinning at nothing, then made myself put it on the charger and set it face-down before I did something even more ridiculous, like reread the message another six times.
I couldn't let myself get carried away over an email. I was building an entire narrative out of nothing, and if I wasn't careful, that narrative was going to start running the show. Tomorrow, I'd thank him properly for the recommendation, pick up the book from the library, and let this whole thing quietly fizzle out into nothing more than a first-week crush brought on by too much studying and not enough sleep.
I hadn't scraped together every cent of tuition on my own, without a dime from either of my parents, just to blow it on a fantasy that could never actually go anywhere.
Clara’s POVThe library held thousands of books, and not one of them helped in the slightest.I shoved another volume back onto the shelf, hoping I had returned it to the correct spot so others could find it, then pulled out the next mythology text and quickly scanned the blurb for anything useful. When that book failed too I set it back and yawned.I had not slept.Since nine o’clock last night I had paced my tiny dorm room, replaying every second and wondering what I had done wrong. What had shifted in those few moments? At first Professor Vance had been so determined to please me, and then, right when I was about to finish, he ordered me to leave and not look back.Maybe he finally understood what he was doing.Maybe he realized he had crossed a line by touching a student.Maybe hegah, I did not know. I could not make sense of it at all. He had been so possessive, so hungry, so dominant last night when he lifted me onto his desk, tore off my panties, and claimed my pussy as his.Wh
Lucan's POVClara lay stretched across my desk, right on the edge of climax, her body rigid and her eyes squeezed shut. I stopped just before she finished, sensing my wolf about to seize control. If I heard that pretty mouth cry my name while her legs shook around my shoulders, fuck, I would lose everything.I would shift into my beast right here, right now, in front of a human.“More,” Clara whispered, her voice rough.Hell, I wanted to force my name from her lips so badly it physically hurt to pull back.“Clara, you have to leave,” I said, staring down at the wooden floor between her thighs. No matter how much I craved it, I could not look up into her pleading eyes or listen to those soft moans any longer. I was seconds from shifting with students still roaming the halls and Clara right here with me.She propped herself up on her forearms. “Is something wrong"“Now, Clara. Get out.” I stood quickly and turned my back so she would not see the canines in my mouth or the gold in my eye
Clara’s POVTwo hours later I stood outside Professor Vance’s office door with my stomach in knots and The Red Hammer pressed tight against my chest. Earlier I had lied to Professor Vance. I had not had class; I had gone straight back to my dorm, showered, shaved, and maybe… tried to invent some excuse for having sat in his office with the door closed.I did not think he believed I had only been there to talk.Office hours were meant for exactly that, and for some reason I had chosen to arrive about two minutes before they were scheduled to end. I told myself I simply did not know what to say and wanted the meeting to be short. But the real reason I showed up right before Lucan Vance finished his hours was that I did not want him focused on anyone else while I was there. I wanted his attention. I wanted him more than I should admit.Deciding I would never invent a perfect excuse, I stepped into his office. A girl from my class sat at his desk, brows furrowed, our textbook open in fron
Lucan's POVBefore I headed out for my run, I spotted Clara sitting on the grass in front of the classics building. It almost felt like she was waiting for me to step outside and notice her. At least that was what I told myself, though I still could not quite read her. I did not know yet whether this pull between us went both ways. But when I finally walked into the sunlight, she was nowhere in sight. Jasmine occupied her usual spot, smiling up at me the way she had ever since she turned eighteen a few months earlier. I did not know how she had driven Clara away, yet I could not stop myself from finding out.“Hi, Alpha,” Jasmine said, rolling onto her back and propping herself up on her forearms as I drew closer.I let out a low growl. “It is Professor Vance here, Jasmine. You know that.”She dipped her head. “Sorry, Professor Vance. What are you doing out here? Levi mentioned that you never run around the campus.”Instead of playing along, I went straight to the point. My wolf needed
Clara’s POV The grass still held the heat of the afternoon when Jasmine flopped onto her stomach beside me, phone already glowing in her hands. Her textbooks sat in a neat, untouched stack like props. “So,” she said, eyes still on the screen, “how was the god’s lecture?” I turned another page of the novel I’d been glued to since I left his classroom. Three hundred pages of dense theory and I couldn’t put the damn thing down. Half of me hoped he’d notice it tucked under my arm tomorrow. The other half knew I was being ridiculous. “Fine,” I said. She finally looked up and wiggled her brows. “Just fine? Girl, the man looks like he was carved out of something illegal. Don’t tell me you sat there taking notes like a model student.” I hadn’t. Not really. I’d spent most of the hour watching the way his throat moved when he swallowed, the way his sleeves were rolled just high enough to show the veins in his forearms. And then I’d opened my mouth and asked about extra credit in a
Lucan’sPOV"As promised" I moved down the rows handing out quiz sheets "five questions on last night's reading. Anyone who added the class late, you'll make it up during office hours."A round of groans swept the auditorium before the room settled into that particular hush of pens scratching against paper. Rue tore through her sheet like she'd been waiting all morning for the chance, and something about that made me want to smile despite myself. In all my years standing in front of a classroom, I'd never had a student care about this material the way I did.Now I had one who did. And she also happened to be my mate."Bring them up front when you're finished."Students trickled up one by one to drop off their quizzes, but Rue stayed put at her desk in the front row, clearly finished. I could see the answers filled in, even a short explanation scrawled beside one of them and still she didn't move. Waiting, it seemed, for the room to clear first.Declan was the last one standing, and
