Kahlan's POV

I turned the corner, my legs feeling like lead as I followed Ava’s retreating back into the warmth of the house.

The transition from the salt-stung air to the interior was a blur of polished wood and flickering shadows.

I wasn't looking where I was going, my mind still reeling from the revelation on the lawn, and I slammed abruptly into a wall.

Except it wasn't a wall; it was the solid, unyielding expanse of a man’s chest.

The impact rattled my already aching bones, sending a jolt of pain through my shoulder.

I stumbled back, blinking rapidly to clear the haze from my vision, and looked up to meet blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.

He was tall, built with the kind of effortless athletic grace that usually took years of dedicated discipline to master.

"Sorry," I said, the word feeling hollow and flat in my mouth.

I tried to sidestep him, wanting nothing more than to find a dark corner to crawl into, but he moved with me, stepping directly in front of me to block my path

Kahlan's POV I got up from the seat slowly, my movements jerky and uncoordinated as if I were moving through water. It felt like time had suddenly stopped, the world narrowing down to the space between us.I could actually count my own heartbeat, a frantic thudding against my ribs that seemed to drown out the sound of the waves."What's wrong with him?" I asked again, my voice trembling. "How is he, Ava? Tell me the truth.""He almost lost Nyx during the escape," Ava said, her voice barely audible."Blood was technically filling his lungs from the internal damage, but he still insisted on finding you.""He was going to try and fly, even in that state, and when Nyx refused to let him, he was going to take away her free will to force her.""Luckily, his body gave out and he passed out before he could do something he’d never forgive himself for."I felt the tears start to fall then, hot and relentless."And he hasn't woken up yet?" I asked, letting out a jagged sob that felt like it was

Kahlan's Pov."Hi."The woman said the word like she was testing a foreign language, her voice trembling with an uncertainty that made my skin crawl.I ignored her completely, my gaze snapping toward Ava instead."What is going on?" I demanded, my voice sounding like grinding stone. The typically stoic woman—the one who always had a plan, always had a shield up—actually looked worried. She had no answers for me, her silence hanging in the air like a heavy shroud.I turned my back on them both, looking up at the massive, leathery form of my dragon."Well, it seems no one has anything to tell me," I spat, the bitterness coating my tongue."Just take me back to school, Vermithor."*Hear her out,* the dragon's voice rumbled deep within the cavern of my mind, bypassing my ears.*It is a long flight back to the academy, and you are far from healed.*I felt his mental touch, heavy and ancient, trying to soothe the jagged edges of my temper.*She was treating your wounds; at least stay until

Kahlan“Buddy, it would be nice if you actually helped me out.”The voice reaches me through the heavy, suffocating fog of unconsciousness long before I am truly ready to wake up.It is familiar, echoing with a rasping edge that is annoyingly persistent.I do not open my eyes, for the simple reason that I do not yet possess the physical strength to fight the darkness behind my lids. There’s a deep, vibrating huff beside me that rattles the very ground I am lying on.Vermithor.“You know,” the voice continues, sounding more amused than concerned now, “I can no longer understand a single word you say.”“And if you’re whining about the quality of your breakfast, you can stop it right now.”“Three goats is all I can manage to hunt in this terrain, so that is all you get for now.”“You will get four sheep in the afternoon if I can find a flock, and I’ll even throw in a chicken too if you behave.”I feel someone tilt my head back with a gentle, cautious pressure.Fingers—warm, calloused, an

Soren's Pov Freya stands in the middle of the smoking ruin, her hands moving in a mechanical rhythm as she hands out blankets to the injured. Her movements are automatic and robotic, her eyes hollow and drained of light, yet she remains focused on the task at hand.Survivors sit or lie in the dirt around her, some weeping openly while others sit in a terrifying, catatonic shock.I scan the area wildly, my heart hammering against my broken ribs as I look for one specific face in the crowd.“Where’s Kahlan?”Freya looks up sharply at the sound of my voice, the recognition in her eyes instantly replaced by a deep, aching pity.Dylan steps up beside me, his presence a heavy weight at my shoulder.“We don’t know.”I turn on him, the world narrowing down to the point of his jaw.“What did you say?”His jaw tightens, a muscle leaping in his cheek as he prepares for my reaction.“We lost. Badly. Horribly, might I add, in a way we never anticipated.”“All of a sudden, they started moving in o

Soren“Where’s Kahlan?”That’s the first thing I ask when consciousness finally claws its way back into my body, dragging me from the numbing depths of the dark.My eyes burn, and my chest feels as though it has been systematically crushed and then glued back together entirely wrong.Every single breath I take is a grueling negotiation with my own lungs, a deal I have no memory of ever agreeing to.Dylan doesn’t answer me immediately.Neither does Easton, who is surprised to see me not sure whyThey exchange a heavy, weighted look over the edge of my bed—or my cell cot, technically speaking.Stone walls surround us, cold and indifferent, accompanied by the oppressive weight of iron bars and that familiar, damp smell of confinement that clings to the back of my throat.Figures.I wake up in a cage, treated like a prisoner in a war I was supposed to be leading.“Let's just get you out of here first,” Dylan says, his voice carefully neutral, though it does nothing to hide the tension rad
