Soren’s PO

Seeing them together was like taking a blade straight to the chest.

Kahlan and Ethan.

Of all people, it had to be him.

The vampire who I despised, who never seemed to have a real reason for being around her, who, for some reason, always managed to show up the moment she was upset with me.

I stood there for a moment, frozen, my hands tightening into fists.

She was laughing. Actually laughing.

The sound that used to make my entire day now just burned.

“Having fun, are we?” I said, louder than I meant to.

Kahlan’s smile fell instantly.

She turned, her posture stiffening the second she saw me.

Perfect.

I stalked forward, my voice sharp. “You want to tell me why you’re spending time with him? Alone?”

Kahlan crossed her arms. “Last I checked, I don’t owe you explanations, Soren.”

“You do when you’re associating yourself with someone like him.” I spat out bitterly. “You have no idea what he’s capable of.”

“I know exactly what I’m doing,” Kahlan shot back. “And what’s your prob

KahlanThe room went quiet the moment Ava closed the door. It wasn't the kind of silence that precedes a storm, but something far more unsettling. It wasn't tense, and it wasn't dramatic. It was just… wrong.Easton leaned against the heavy oak table, his arms folded tight across his chest. He watched Ava with that sharp, calculating look he used when he was pretending not to care—the one where his eyes narrowed just enough to hide the flicker of genuine fear behind them.Ava, on the other hand, looked perfectly at ease. Too at ease. She stood with her weight centered, her expression a mask of practiced serenity, like she had already lived through this conversation a dozen times and knew exactly how it would end.“You said it was urgent,” Easton said, his voice grating like gravel against the silence. “So talk.”Ava smiled faintly, a ghost of a gesture that didn't reach her eyes. “We’re running out of time.”My spine stiffened. I stayed near the wall, my shoulders pressed against the

Kahlan's POV Soren said it for the millionth time.“You’ll hurt yourself.”I ignored him.The dummy in front of me was already leaning crooked, its head barely attached, straw spilling out where my fists had split the stitching. My knuckles burned. My chest burned worse. I drove my elbow into its torso again anyway.“Well pardon me for being frustrated,” I shot back, not even looking at him. “Its not like Freya said someone is trying to get into my head.”I twisted, kicked the dummy square in the ribs, and felt something tear.“Even if no one will say it out loud,” I continued, breath sharp, “magic like that can only be done by two people. Ava. And the council witch.”Soren didn’t interrupt. That only fueled me.“Sasha’s mother,” I added. “Who works for the man who wants me dead...AkA Ramsey "The frustration boiled over. I planted my foot and kicked hard. The dummy’s head snapped clean off and rolled across the floor.Silence followed.I straightened slowly and wiped sweat off my br

Kahlan's PovI woke up already tired. It wasn't the kind of weariness that came from a simple lack of sleep or a long day of exertion, but the kind that lived deep in my bones—heavy, stagnant, and unmoving. My eyes opened slowly, blinking against a light that felt far too harsh, and for a long moment, I didn’t know where I was. The ceiling above me looked unfamiliar; it was too white, too clean, and lacked the comforting shadows of my own room.Suddenly, fire flashed behind my eyes.I sucked in a sharp, jagged breath, my fingers curling into the sheets until my knuckles turned white. “Kahlan?”Freya’s voice cut through the mental fog like a blade. I blinked and focused, forcing myself to truly look until her face came into view. She was sitting beside the bed, her eyes rimmed with dark, weary shadows and her shoulders held with a brittle tension. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days, her usual composure fraying at the edges. On the other side of the room, Soren stood near the

SorenI knew something was terribly wrong the very moment Freya started running toward me at full speed. The girl was seriously bad at cardio.“Soren!” she shouted, breathless from the sprint, her hair half loose and her eyes wide with unadulterated panic. My chest tightened instantly, a knot of pure dread forming, before she even reached me.“What happened? Tell me,” I demanded, grasping her shoulders.“It’s Kahlan,” she said, grabbing my arm and nearly dragging me to move. “Something’s profoundly wrong with her. She’s not responding.”My heart dropped to my stomach in a single, agonizing thump.“What do you mean wrong?” I demanded, already moving forward. “Where is she right now?”“She’s been staying in her room” Freya said quickly, spitting out the words as we started moving. “For three days straight. She barely spoke, she's barely eaten or slept. I stupidly thought she just needed time alone given her condition.”“And what happened then?” I pressed, matching her urgent pace.“This

Freya's POVI woke up with a strange, unsettling feeling that the room was too quiet. Not peacefully quiet. Empty quiet.Normally Kahlan shifted in her sleep, muttered under her breath, or paced restlessly when the nightmares came to her. There was always some sound of her presence. This morning, however, there was nothing but the heavy, unnatural silence.I sat up slowly and looked toward the other side of the room, my heart already beginning to pound.Kahlan was already awake. She sat motionless on the edge of the bed, her back impossibly straight, her hands resting loosely in her lap.Her hair hung around her face, completely untouched and unmoving. She wasn’t moving, breathing, or even twitching.“Kahlan?” I said softly, instantly worried by her stillness. No response. At first, I told myself she was simply ignoring me in a new fit of grief-induced withdrawal.Grief often does that to people, I reasoned. It wraps them up so tightly that they forget the rest of the world and the

Author's POVKahlan walked fast. Not running—but close enough that anyone watching could tell she was trying to outrun something inside her.Her boots struck the stone corridor in sharp, uneven beats. Each step sent a dull ache up her legs, a reminder of the power she had unleashed moments ago and barely managed to contain. Her hands were still trembling, fingers curling and uncurling as if they didn’t quite belong to her anymore. She didn’t look back. She knew Soren was behind her.She could feel him the way she felt heat before fire—steady, inevitable, impossible to ignore.“Kahlan.”His voice echoed off the stone walls. She didn’t slow.“Kahlan, wait.”She turned the corner sharply, intending to put distance between them, but he was faster. A blur of motion, a solid presence—and suddenly she was pressed back against the cold stone wall, his arms braced on either side of her, blocking her escape without actually touching her.The sudden stop knocked the air from her lungs. Her back
