Kahlan’s POV

I needed space.

Space from Soren.

Space from the chaos that came with his name.

And so... I skipped class.

For once, I didn’t care what anyone thought. I just couldn’t sit in that room and pretend everything was normal when all I could hear in my head was “you and Sasha—whatever agreement you made—killed it.”

My own words haunted me, and the worst part was, I meant them.

I pulled the hood of my jacket higher as I walked down the corridor that led to where Vermithor was kept. I needed him. Not as a dragon this time, but as the only being that still made sense.

Of course, my luck never lasted.

Ramsey was standing right in my path, deep in conversation with Derek.

Great.

Two of the most observant people in this entire academy. If either of them saw me, they’d drag me back to class.

I pressed myself against the wall, inching forward slowly. Maybe, if I moved quietly enough—

“Skipping class, are we?”

I jumped so hard I almost yelped. “Ethan!” I hissed, spinning around. “Y

KahlanIt took a minute for my vision to clear. Everything felt distant, muffled, like I was underwater. My eyelids felt heavy, glued shut by a exhaustion I couldn’t quite name.“Mom—stop. She’s awake. They let her go.”The voice reached me first, but it didn’t fully register. It sounded like it was coming from the end of a long tunnel. My head throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache, and the world tilted precariously when I tried to focus on the flickering shadows above me.“Kay,” someone said, their voice cracking with an urgency that pulled me further toward the surface. “It’s me. Are you alright?”Hands touched my shoulders, firm but trembling, trying to help me sit up.“I’m supposed to be asking you that question,” I murmured hoarsely, my throat feeling like it had been scraped with glass. I blinked, forcing my eyes to stay open. “You look awful.”Freya froze for a second, a flicker of her usual spirit returning before she laughed weakly. Her face was deathly pale, the skin pulled

Kahlan I wiped the sweat from my brow, my chest rising and falling in a rhythm that still felt off.Ramsey sat across from me, calm as ever, his eyes tracking my every movement like he could see straight into my body and mind.“I can’t get it,” I said, frustration thick in my voice. “Why exactly are you teaching me how to breathe? I breathe just fine.”Ramsey chuckled, the sound low and amused.“If you can control your breathing, you can run faster… be faster. If you can do that, you can slow the spread of poison, and if you ever exert yourself while trying to close the barrier, you can stay conscious just long enough for someone to find you—if you’re far away.”I raised an eyebrow.“Careful, or I’ll assume you’re trying to save my life,” I joked, the tension in my shoulders easing just slightly.“Would it be so bad if I was?”His voice was quiet, but there was a faint lightness to it—a happiness I hadn’t seen in him before. Not fully, not entirely, but it was there, shimmering benea

Soren's POV.I didn’t even knock.I didn’t pause.I didn’t think about what I might see—or who I might have to fight. All I knew was her name, her scent, and how far I was willing to go to make them pay.“Their entire coven stays in one of the dorms… I set off the fire alarm and moved them here,” Freya said, voice steady as if we weren’t walking into hell itself. She didn’t flinch.Of course she wouldn’t.“And why can’t we just have Nyx burn down the building?” she added, tossing a glance over her shoulder.I didn’t answer immediately.I let my eyes scan the room, watching the way the shadows danced against the peeling wallpaper and the terrified huddle of women who thought they were untouchable.Windows cracked from the alarm’s chaos, witches frozen in confusion, their fingers twitching as they tried to find the thread of a spell that was already failing them.I let my lips curl faintly, savoring the way the air turned cold at my presence.“Now where’s the fear in that?” I said, rele

Kahlan's POV I didn’t expect him to agree though. The moment the words left my mouth—*teach me to be that fast*—I half expected Ramsey to laugh it off with that condescending tilt of his head, or perhaps shut it down entirely with a reminder of my status as his prisoner. Instead, the mirth vanished, his smile faded into a flat line, and something sharp and calculating flickered behind his eyes.“You’re serious,” he said, his voice dropping into that low, academic register that demanded total honesty.“I don’t joke about survival,” I told him, my voice steady despite the adrenaline humming in my veins. “I’ve spent too much time being the one who's too slow to react. I’m done with it.”He studied me for a long moment, searching for a lie, before nodding once, a sharp, decisive movement.“Fine.”That single word should’ve scared me more than it did. It was an admission of a new dynamic, a shift from captive to protégé that felt like walking onto thin ice.~~~Training with Ramsey wasn’

Kahlan's POV I stared at him while he hovered far too close to my throat, his fingers ghosting over my skin with a clinical detachment, like he was inspecting which fruit was the best in a market stalls.“You’re insane,” I said flatly, my voice barely a rasp against the quiet of the room. “Has anyone ever told you that? Or do they all just nod and hope you don't snap?”Ramsey didn’t even look offended; if anything, he looked preoccupied. He tilted my chin slightly, his thumb pressing just below my jawline as his eyes remained focused on the angry red marks on my neck.“I’m checking,” he said, his tone infuriatingly level. “I was hoping I didn’t strangle you too hard. It’s a delicate balance, restraint and necessity.”I snorted, the sound sharp and ugly. “Reassuring. I’ll be sure to put that on your testimonial.”If my hands and legs weren’t bound tight—the price I paid for my first very enthusiastic, very bloody attempt at stabbing him—I would have shoved a knife straight into his ne

Soren's POV “Wake her up.”My voice cracked the moment the words left my mouth, sounding like dry timber snapping underfoot. I was already moving toward Kahlan, my boots scuffing the floorboards in a frantic rhythm. I was already reaching for her, my hands hovering just above her pale skin, fueled by the delusional hope that if I touched her again, she would simply snap out of it. Like this was some weird ass trance. Something simple. Something fixable with a shake of the shoulders and a whispered name.“I can’t do that,” Ava said. Her voice was flat, agonizingly firm.I turned on her so fast my vision blurred into a smear of shadow and candlelight. “What kind of stupid response is that?” I snapped, the words tasting like bile. “You’re a witch. Get your potions. Your vials. Your ancient spells and your twisted foreign languages. Use whatever black market magic you need. Just wake her up.”Ava didn’t flinch. She stood like a statue carved from ice, and that stillness almost made i
