Arlo’s POV
Alpha’s packhouse Quarters, Moonveil I jolted awake, lungs gasping, sweat slicking my chest. The moonlight through my window cast shadows like claws across the ceiling. My fists were clenched, and my pulse thundered. “Not again,” I muttered, dragging my hands down my face. The dream, the same one that had haunted me for twenty-two years that clung to me like blood. I was eight. Careless. Naive. My parents were fighting again, loud and bitter while we were supposed to be having a picnic in the park. I kicked my ball too far. It rolled into the road. I followed, chasing it like it was the only thing I could control. I heard the tires scream before I even saw the car. Too fast. Too close. The driver swerved to miss me. The car flipped. Metal crunched. Silence fell. And I remember her—so small—wailing beside the wreckage as they pulled her parents’ bodies from the mangled steel. I never told anyone. My fault. My silence. My shame. Kael, my wolf, stirred in the back of my mind. He didn’t growl. Didn’t speak. He just… watched. The dream always silenced him too. I pushed myself into the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, but it did nothing. The guilt clung like a second skin. If I could find her… the girl from that day… maybe I could ask for her forgiveness. But how do you ask someone to forgive the moment that shattered their life? . . The Next Morning Alpha’s Office, Moonveil I barely noticed the stack of contract proposals on my desk. Lunaris Lineage’s logo glared up at me from every file like it knew what I was hiding. What I wanted. Who I wanted. Bells. Kael stirred the second I thought her name. A low growl of possessiveness rumbled beneath my ribs. She had embedded herself in my head like a scent I couldn’t shake. She’d danced for me once and I couldn’t stop seeing her every time I closed my eyes. That damn stripper had embedded herself into my bloodstream. One dance. One look and I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Not just the curves or the lips or the sway of her hips but the way her eyes had locked with mine like they knew something about me I didn’t even understand. Her scent had been impossible. Earthy. Wild and saucy … a note of Omega but not just any Omega, Something darker. Richer. My phone buzzed. Rivena. I sighed and pressed answer. “What is it?” I said. “Well, good morning to you too, Alpha,” came her honeyed voice. “What do you want, Rivena?” She huffed. “Do I always need a reason to call you?” “Yes.” “I was thinking maybe we could hang out tonight.” “I’m busy.” “No, you’re not. You work all day. But you’re off tonight.” “That doesn’t mean I’m spending it with you.” “You’ve changed,” she snapped. “Since her.” I stiffened. “There is no her.” “Then stop acting like I don’t exist,” Rivena hissed. “You were convenient. Don’t confuse that with meaning.” “I’m not just your mistress—” “Yes, you are,” I cut in. “And you’re not even that anymore.” I hung up. Kael stirred, growling low. "She’s not her. She never was." A knock came at the door, and Briar walked in without waiting for a response, of course. “You look like hell,” he said, sipping a coffee like he hadn’t just insulted his Alpha. I didn’t respond. He flopped into the chair across from me and took a long sip. “Let me guess. Rivena called?” “Not your business.” “Let me rephrase. Did Rivena call and remind you why you don’t do relationships?” I leaned back, pressing my fingers to my temples. “What do you want, Briar?” He just smiled sheepishly at me. “Get to the point,” I muttered, running a hand down my jaw. “You planning on going to The Den tonight?” I raised an eyebrow. “That why you’re here?” He shrugged. “You keep telling me you're over her. Thought I’d see if you were ready to prove it.” “I told you, I’m not chasing her.” “But you’re thinking about her.” “I didn’t say I wasn’t haunted by her.” Kael huffed, restless. “You’re getting worse,” Briar said, cocking his head. “You haven’t fed your wolf in weeks. Haven’t let him run. Haven’t taken a mate in...what, months?” “Do you have a point, or do you just enjoy being annoying? Maybe I don’t want one.” “Or maybe you’re scared because the only one you do want is a girl who doesn’t kneel, doesn’t beg, and won’t give you her name.” My jaw clenched. “Touché,” Briar added smugly. “You done?” “Almost,” he said. “Because while you’ve been moody and brooding over mystery girl, I’ve been busy falling for a stripper.” I blinked. “Excuse me?” He winced. “Her name’s Ivy. Stage name Honey.” I couldn’t hold in the smirk. “You’re into a stripper named Honey?” “She’s not just a stripper.” “That’s exactly what I said about Bells.” “Then maybe we’re both royally fucked.” I snorted. “She’s human, right?” “I think so,” he said, unsure. “She doesn’t know what we are. I don’t think she even suspects.” “That’s dangerous.” “She’s not dangerous,” Briar said. “She’s peace and very funny. For ten minutes, when she danced for me, I didn’t think about bloodlines, duties, or pack politics. I just… breathed.” I stared at him for a beat. “So you’re going back.” He nodded. “Yeah. I need to see her again.” We sat in quiet understanding. Two wolves. Two obsessions. I stared down at the Lunaris contracts on my desk. He groaned. “Don’t make it weird.” “I didn’t know the mighty Beta Briar could fall for a human.” “She doesn’t know about our world. I don’t think she even suspects what I am. That’s what makes it... simple.” “Or dangerous.” “Or... exactly what I need,” he said softly. We sat in silence for a second, both of us thinking about the women who’d wormed their way into our lives. He broke the quiet first. “So. You in?” I didn’t answer but Kael growled. "We were going.”LENA'S POV My head trapped painfully, with my brain spinning like I'd been riding a merry-go-round. The last thing I could remember was the nurse. She'd smiled and muttered something scary. I couldn't remember what, though. My brain seemed so disoriented to pick the details clearly.I suddenly heard a voice.Lena? My heart stopped for a second–Arlo?.I tried to lift myself, but my arms were numb.He knelt down beside me and held me up with a smile. “You’re okay, Lena. I'm here. No one's gonna hurt you”.Something felt off about him, though. His voice was smooth and his eyes too sharp or i was probably seeing things. But there was no way this was Arlo, right? But somehow, the aura felt just the same.I blinked severely, my breath caught in my throat. Something was so wrong.“What's going on, where am i?” I asked. He dropped his head to the side, still smiling.“You're somewhere sacred, to fulfill your purpose” “Purpose? What're you talking about” I tried moving away from him so i
ARLO'S POV I took a walk around the hospital, getting fresh air and at the same time trying to free myself from the stress that I'd faced the past few days.Protecting Lena was my top priority and i would go all out to make sure she was safe.Speaking of Lena, the nurse should be done with her by now if I'm not mistaken.I turned back towards the ward but ran into a little girl on my way. She was pretty and had a heart melting smile, reminding me of Lena.“I'm sorry mister” she quickly apologised.“Don't be, it's fine” I waved her off with a smile. She handed me a candy she was holding. “It's lemonade. My favourite”“Thankyou” I chuckled. “But you don't have to give it to me. It wasn't your fault we bumped into eachother”“I'm not giving it to you because of that” she explained. “I want you to have it because i like you and want to be your friend”“I see” I nodded, taking the candy from her. She was sweet and i dared not to refuse her kind offer.“You have this too” I fished out some
LENA'S POV “What?” I laughed. “What are you two talking about now?”“I just heard something about keeping a child” Arlo said. “Didn't you Briar?”“Well i suppose” Briar shrugged.“Pretty fancy ears you've got there Arlo” I laughed. “Briar clearly didn't hear anything”I was trying to make the situation look less awkward but i only worsened it. I could lie fine, but my expressions always said otherwise.I just hoped dearly that they both really didn't hear anything we said.“But you were really talking about a baby just now” Briar stated. “And why do you look so down Ivy, are you feeling sick again” he walked over to her.“Oh. We were talking about an aunt of hers who passed. She thinks keeping the baby would be alot for her mom” I quickly said.It seemed like a perfect cover up story, anyone would easily fall for it.“Is that it?” Briar looked worried. “It's alright honey, everything will be fine” he held her close to himself.Ivy let down her walls and sobbed, crying so hard i almos
LENA'S POV Soft whispers echoed in my head as my eyes slowly fluttered open. My vision was blurred at first, but after a few blinks, it became clear again.I felt a soft grip on my hand and looked down, beside me was Arlo. He held my hand, resting his head by the side of the bed. Seeing him, I smiled without even realizing. I knew he would come for me, and I'm glad he didn't let me down. What other proof did i need to know that he loved me beyond the moon? It was all clear now. Just when i thought i had no one to rely on in this world, he showed up out of the blues. A man who will protect me till death do us part.Thinking of the fact that he was about to become mine made me feel excited. Who wouldn't be?I let out a sigh, looking around the hospital room. There was no sign of Ivy. I knew Arlo might've sent her home to rest. Gosh, I was really putting her through a lot of stress. My mind flew back to the previous day. How dare that son of a bitch! Was he really going to sacrifice
ARLO'S POV I let out a sigh and held out my hand, Briar quickly handed me a towel. We were in a dimly lit room, facing three men that were hanging upside down.“Get me the pinchers” I ordered.“Please Alpha, we didn't mean it that way” elder Eron pleaded with a trembling voice, his breathing slow but heavy as a result of his hanging position.I said nothing, i infact hasn't uttered a word to any of them for the past thirty minutes. But that was after giving them five minutes to confess, but as expected they refused to speak.Elder Gregor had already lost his a limb and tooth, i was going to cut them all up bit by bit till they said everything they knew. I wiped the blood off my hands before picking up a new pair of scalpel.“I'm only going to ask this once Eron, don't make me repeat myself” I placed the scalpel at the front angle of his left ear. “Where is Lena”“I don't know, i swe…ahh” he groaned, wriggling his body. As i started cutting through his ear without waiting for him to
LENA'S POV"One hell of a bitch you are" a man snorted, tightening the chains on my hand that had been tied to the top of the bed.He was Garry, some shithead who'd obviously been hired to kidnap me.I winced in pain as the metal tore into my skin mercilessly.Yes, i had been caught, barely ten minutes after i tried to run. Now my security had been doubled, so much i had to give up on any escape thoughts. He leaned closer to me, his breathe reeking of garlic and alcohol, so bad i nearly threw up. "Try anything stupid again and i swear you'll never be able to tell the tale"I chuckled, though he sounded serious, i didn't get scared. Deep down i knew it would only be a matter of time before Arlo would find me. Yes, i trusted him that much."You think it's funny?" He laughed, moving towards the small table in the room."Yes" I laughed too. "Watching your tongue shoved down your stomach. That would be quite a scene you know"He glanced at me, obviously shocked at how bold i could get even
