Arlo’s POV

I sat at the long wooden table in the center of the pack house, surrounded by the elders.

The room smelled of expensive perfume on old people,I inhaled deeply getting bored of the meeting.

I’d been here a hundred times before, but today I just wanted to leave.

“You’re not getting any younger,” Elder Rilo said, folding his hands. “It’s time, Arlo. The pack needs a Luna. You need to pick a mate.”

I nodded, pretending to agree, but my chest felt tight. I already had someone, that which I knew they would approve of easily, I just hadn’t told them yet.

“Think about the future,” Elder May added. “You’ve done well leading us, but we need the next step. A Luna brings stability, unity. You know this.”

They kept talking, tossing names and suggestions, as if I hadn’t already made my choice. But my mind wasn’t on them anymore. It was on Lena.
