AVIONNA’S POV

My head raged. Every throb of my pulse felt like a fresh artillery strike behind my eyes, sending blinding flashes of white across my vision before I could even manage to open them.

I tried to swallow but my throat was pure sandpaper and my tongue sat heavy against the roof of my mouth.

My eyes cracked open to a white roof with starry stickers that looked like they had been plastered long ago by a child who had to climb a chair to stick them on.

There was no arrangement, just a di

  • The Alpha’s Nemesis    Chapter 56: To find a way in

FABIAN’S POVEven before Cicero mentioned it, I had been thinking about it.This puzzle that remained unsolved was one that greatly bothered me. My people’s safety depended on cracking whatever this was and I still hadn’t figured it out.So, the instant Cicero mentioned Darius, my gaze swept to him and my eyes narrowed.Had he figured something out? Something I was missing?Unfortunately, he hadn’t. Cicero had only been asking because he wanted to know if I had unraveled the mystery myself.“We still haven’t figured out what he wants.”I shot Cicero another glance. Did he think I didn’t know that? Or were his thoughts so muddled by whatever had fueled him into kicking up a punch this morning that he thought I hadn’t considered it?Whatever it was that was grating on him, I hoped it ironed it out soon because I didn’t think I could bear with this another day. I preferred my Beta when he was rational and calm.Ever since our conversation with Kael, I’d turned everything I knew over in

  • The Alpha’s Nemesis    Chapter 55: It won’t change anything

FABIAN’S POVThe sound of Cicero's fist hitting the punching bag was starting to get irritating. He had fallen into an annoying rhythm of jabs, hooks, cross punches and kicks that made the bag sway heavily.Occasionally it swung backwards then forward with a momentum fast enough to knock a human out but each time, he caught it and immediately hit it again. For the better part of twenty minutes, I had been watching him do so and I still hadn't figured out what had gotten into him.Last night, he had chosen not to return to his own apartment and had stayed the night at mine. Somehow, his mood seemed even fouler this morning than it has been at dinner last night.I didn't even want to think about the latter event or what had occured afterwards so as grating on my nerves as it was, I kept my focus on Cicero whose punches grew even more aggressive.Usually, when we trained together, he showed more restraint. Moreso, because he was usually trying to avoid getting his nose broken when we tr

  • The Alpha’s Nemesis    Chapter 54: A different way to carry grief

AVIONNA'S POV I didn't realize where Fiona was taking me until I spotted the flower stall ahead of us.My feet slowed as we approached the familiar wooden stand with different buckets and vases of flowers in different colors.I glanced at Zolani doubtfully, the clogs already turning in my head. How had she known to come here? Why did she bring me here?Earlier this morning, when she'd asked me what my plan for the day was and asked me to get dressed, I had thought up a bunch of reasons for why she'd done so but even after thinking so hard, I couldn't figure out where she intended to take me.She hadn't responded when I asked too, and had only flashed me a mysterious smile then downed the bowl of cereal she made for herself.I had looked to Martha for enlightenment, wondering if she knew what Zolani had in mind Martha had only shook her head at me to show she didn't know.Over breakfast, I'd pondered it and eventually, my thoughts shifted to many different things. There was so much to

AVIONNA’S POVMy head raged. • The Alpha’s Nemesis    Chapter 52: No rush

Chapter 52: No rush AVIONNA’S POV My wolf had done us more harm than good, forgetting that our entire skeleton was made of fragile, aching things. The pain was the first thing I felt the moment I shifted back. It was everywhere, but my shoulders burned the most. The wound there hadn't looked like much in my wolf form but now that I'd shifted back, it hurt like hell. I could see the imprint Cicero's fangs had left behind and my side stung with every breath I took. My leg throbbed badly too and it hurt to keep my weight on it. I'd just gotten injured too, so my healing hadn't kicked in. It wouldn't have hurt so much if I remained in my wolf form, but my wolf had also decided to give up our skin to me so now, I had to bear the brunt of what she'd done to us. However, even as I hurt, I didn't blame her for anything she did. Like me, she had just been ignorant. I could liken her to the woman I was the day I arrived in Saturn Pack. The Avionna of that day had been filled with s

  • The Alpha’s Nemesis    Chapter 51: Devastated wolf

AVIONNA'S POV Nothing had ever smelled better.A thick, musty musk swarmed my senses. One second, it wafted like the base note of rich forest loam and freshly upturned soil after a heavy autumn rain. The next, it was the undertone of rotten cedar bark and crushed pine needles dried to a crisp. My wolf's anger dissipated immediately. In a twinkle of an eye, it was gone. Everything faded, narrowing into one thin line, into the man practically dripping with the smell. She lifted her head, and gone was the recollection of why she was angry in the first place.Within her, I was lost too, but not because of the scent that had intoxicated her. What I couldn't understand was why she hadn't shown submission.Just like Cicero who was now back in his human form, chest panting heavily, stewing with suppressed animosity and whose face held a thick layer of discontent, I had felt the irrepressible command in Fabian's voice, but unlike Cicero, my wolf seemed completely unaffected by it.She didn't
