Scarlett's POV

Warmth. That was the first thing I felt as I stirred awake. A deep warmth spreading through my chest, making me feel safe, even though I knew I wasn’t. I lay still for a moment, trying to remember where I was, why my throat felt raw, why my eyes burned with unshed tears.

Then it came flooding back.

Luciano. His cold eyes staring at me like I was nothing but a nuisance. His cruel words earlier that day. The way he shut me out, freezing the fragile bond I had been trying to rekindle. I wanted to pretend it hadn’t happened, but his rejection still stung deep in my chest.

I let out a shaky breath, turning to my side. My body felt heavy, almost as if I hadn’t slept in days. I rubbed my eyes, wincing at the dull ache in my temples. Had I been crying in my sleep again?

A quiet rumble of thunder rolled in the distance, and I realised the sky outside my window was still dark, lit only by faint lightning flickers. I blinked, adjusting to the shadows dancing across my room, when I

  • The Alpha's prey   Chapter 28

LUCIANO'S P.O.V.Rage was an emotion I was familiar with, and so was disappointment. People could fail you at any time. However, I couldn't tell what exactly I was feeling at the moment. My confrontation with Scarlett from a few moments ago had me rattled inside despite the cold façade I had put on, a façade that I could tell hurt her given her pained expression. The way she switched up from being a concerned friend to being a regular staff member who worked for me. The mate bond was no longer subtle—it pulled at me, clawed, and demanded I give in to it with each passing moment I remained close to her. Scarlett's scent lingered in my mind like a forbidden fruit, and no matter how hard I tried to shake it off, convincing myself that this...connection, this feeling, was just as a result of the mate bond, deep down I knew better. I had begun to develop a certain type of affection towards her, a certain likeness. It seemed the earth shared in my feelings as thunder crackled loudly outside

  • The Alpha's prey   Chapter 27

LUCIANO'S P.O.V.The very thought of her had me restless, nearly driving me crazy. Mate bond or not, I didn't like this one bit. I felt my control slipping; I always had things under control. If I were a normal human, I'd think I was crazy, but I wasn't. I wasn't normal, nor was I human. I was an alpha descended from one of the strongest bloodlines known in history. A De Luca, safe to say, wasn't the most pleased, given that I was easily riled up by a human, a maid at that. And so, I made it my mission to avoid her at all costs for the meantime until I could get my emotions in check. My plan, which had been going fairly smoothly, turned into an absolute mess when I perceived her scent, subtly at first until it grew stronger. A part of me wanted to retrace my steps to where I had come from, but a tiny part of me longed to see her, even just this once. The beastly side of me.While I dwelled in my thoughts, he

  • The Alpha's prey   Chapter 26

SCARLETT'S P.O.V.It's been a couple of days since my last encounter with Mr. De Luca. He wasn't particularly avoiding me, given the fact that we'd happened to run into each other a couple of times, and each time I'd greet him or summon the courage to pass him a smile, he'd blatantly ignore me save for the cold nod he'd give. No longer was that warm and polite man I had spoken to on a few occasions. In his stead was a closed-off, stone-faced being who still looked dashingly hot. I'd caught myself feeling upset that I had possibly sabotaged whatever connection we had; was there even a connection?"Please tell me that my anger or reason for being upset is totally valid." I huffed to the two girls, Rosa and Maria, before me, who exchanged not-so-subtle glances between each other. We were on our lunch break, lounging out on the patio surrounded with beautiful flowery plants while we munched on dessert goodies, which I baked with a twinge of sadness. Why was I sad? I barely knew the guy fo

  • The Alpha's prey   Chapter 25

LUCIANO'S P.O.V.The rain pours down in heavy torrents, washing away everything in its path. The water droplets trickle down the glass window. Mother Nature had a way of surprising us. Blessing us with a good land, mates. A human mated to a werewolf, and not just any kind of werewolf. Werewolf royalty. In my day, the idea itself was preposterous, unacceptable. A human could be mated to a werewolf, but it mostly happened between wolves of lower ranks, not higher status. Marriages between wolves were mostly as a way of creating alliances, getting stronger and richer, and being the most feared. There were times when mates were lucky enough to be of higher ranks; there were others who were mated to warriors, omega. Weak mates, the superior mate in question had to either reject their other half, or if the connection between them was too strong to resist, they'd consider making their mate a mistress. I disliked that a mate is supposed to be cherished, proudly shown off to the world. Unfortu

  • The Alpha's prey   Chapter 24

SCARLETT'S P.O.V.Never in my years of living have I been so plagued by thoughts of a man, much less by thoughts of a man I had no romantic feelings towards. Luciano De Luca unraveled me to no end; his presence unnerved me, and everything about him drew me in. Perhaps it was his looks; I'd crush on good-looking boys, but that was all they were—boys. Luciano De Luca was all man. It had been a day since our very intense, tension-filled encounter; I hadn't caught sight of him ever since. Not like I was keeping an eye out for him. Perhaps I was, maybe only a teeny tiny bit. I couldn't deny the fact that I secretly wanted to see him again.Today, I was tasked with cleaning duty. As I cleaned the hallways, I hummed a quiet tune, winding my waist while using the mop stick as a makeshift dance pole. Spinning around, I catch sight of the one and only Luciano De Luca standing in the hallway, dressed in nice-fitting dark pants and a grey shirt. I nearly tripped over my feet in fright, hunching
