I stared at my phone after the call disconnected, my head spinning with the words my wife, Yvonne Ashby, had just said. "Are you dying? Call me when you're dead!"

Suppressing the tumultuous emotions within me, I forced myself up and used the last of my strength to call 911. As it turned out, emergency services were far more reliable than Yvonne sometimes.

The doctor told me I had suffered food poisoning from consuming undercooked green beans and mushrooms. Fortunately, I had been brought to the hospital in time. If I had arrived even a few minutes later, I wouldn't have been lying safely in a hospital bed right then.

While I was in bed with an IV drip, my phone suddenly rang beside me. Once I snapped back to reality, I picked up my phone and saw Yvonne's name on the screen.

"Samson, do you think stir-fried beef tastes better with or without scallions?"

Her question caught me off guard. When it finally registered, a bitter smile tugged at the corner of my lips. "I'm in the hospital, Yvonne," I said softly.

Yvonne sounded annoyed on the other end of the line. "Right, go get checked out and make sure they give you plenty of medicine."

Without missing a beat, she steered the conversation right back to her question. "Hurry up and tell me—does it taste better with or without scallions?"

I was just about to answer when a man's voice suddenly came through the phone. "Vonne, as long as you're the one cooking, I'll love it with or without scallions."

The very next second, the call was abruptly disconnected.

I stared blankly at the phone in my hand. All of a sudden, two notifications popped up.

"Something urgent came up at work. I'll come home tomorrow."

"Since you're at the hospital, get some extra medication. If you don't have enough money, I'll Venmo you some."

Staring at Yvonne's messages on the screen, I felt a sharp pang in my heart.

Something urgent came up at work? Go to the hospital and get plenty of medicine? How could someone be so dismissive?

This time, I simply set my phone down, leaving Yvonne on read.

Lying on the hospital bed, I stared blankly at the ceiling.

Next to me was a little girl. Noticing how quiet I was, she ambled over with a grin, rested her chin on her hands, and looked up at me. "Mister, why are you all alone? When my daddy was in the hospital, my mommy was always right beside him. Where's your wife, mister?"

Looking at the pure, innocent face in front of me, I responded softly, "My wife? I don't have one."

After hearing that, she sprang to her feet and planted her hands on her hips. Her little face was beet red as she argued, "Mister, you're lying! I saw it with my own eyes. There's a photo of you and a pretty lady inside your phone case.

"Grown-ups aren't allowed to lie! If you lie, your nose will grow really big! Mister, your wife is so pretty! Can I see a picture of the two of you together?"

Right after that, I closed the livestream, stood up, and headed to the airport. On my way there, Yvonne kept calling me, yet there was no longer any reason for me to answer. When I didn't answer her calls, she started spamming me with messages."Honey, what do you mean by that?""Honey, please answer the phone. Did you see the livestream?""Honey, it's not what you think. I only said that to calm Michael down!""Honey, what's with the divorce agreement you sent Michael? What divorce? Didn't we agree not to get a divorce?" As message after message flooded my phone, I felt utterly annoyed and blocked her completely right then and there. Before boarding the plane, I turned around to take one last look at this city where I had lived for a decade, my eyes filled with anticipation for the future. …After landing in Grandma's hometown, I found a random bed-and-breakfast and settled in. In the days that followed, I fully unwound. I spent my days wandering around the small town and

I went straight to Cosmo's law firm. The moment he saw me, tears welled up in his eyes. He stepped forward, pulled me into a tight embrace, and said in a voice filled with heartache, "Sam, you've lost so much weight."I pushed him away and couldn't help but tease, saying, "I wasn't fat to begin with, okay?" After leaving his law firm, I wandered aimlessly through the streets. It was either a strange coincidence or Yvonne simply thought I was too much of a pushover—the moment I looked up, I spotted Yvonne and Michael just a short distance away. Every single word of their conversation drifted into my ears."Don't get any more ideas and message Samson. I will never divorce him!""I only did it because I love you too much, Vonne!""Now that our plan has been exposed, I'm going to abort the baby. I'm not keeping your child. Samson will be upset if I do."I watched the two of them argue in front of me, curling my lips.I'd known it. How could she truly sever ties with him? After all

I kept backing away, doing my best to avoid Yvonne's touch. "I have a cold. I don't want to pass it to you," I explained apathetically. With that, I ignored her, turned over, and went back to sleep. Perhaps because the night was pin-drop silent, I could hear Yvonne's muffled sobs beside me. If this had happened in the past, I would've certainly turned back around, pulled her into my arms, and comforted her with a heavy heart. However, now, all I felt was irritation. "I'm exhausted. Why don't you head back to your own room? I can't sleep soundly with you here." As soon as my words fell, the world went dead silent. Moments later, I felt her slowly get out of bed and walk out of the room. After she left, I quickly drifted back into a deep sleep. To my surprise, I slept remarkably well that night.…Early the next morning, as soon as I woke up, I casually grabbed my phone from the nightstand and saw a message from Cosmo. "I've drafted your divorce agreement. Come pick it up when

Cosmo texted back, "It's been a decade, Sam. Yvonne isn't that innocent young lady anymore. You're the only one who's stayed exactly the way you were."As I looked at Yvonne, memories of our past suddenly flashed through my mind. Yvonne and I had known each other since childhood and had grown up together. However, we couldn't stand the sight of each other back then.Everything changed when Mom and Dad divorced. They each started a new family of their own, and neither of them wanted me, so I had no choice but to live with Grandma. Looking back, that period of my life was pure agony. People called me an unwanted child, and some even spread rumors that I was the reason Mom and Dad divorced. Gradually, I developed severe depression. Yvonne was the first to notice that something was wrong with me. That day, I suddenly felt like I was completely worthless and that it would be better if I just wasn't around anymore. Yvonne couldn't get through to me on the phone, so she hurried ove

The moment Yvonne saw the picture, the color drained from her face. She grasped my hand and blurted out, "Honey, it's not what you think! Michael photoshopped this image. He's trying to drive a wedge between us. This baby is… ours!" I forcefully flung her hand away and responded apathetically, "Alright. In that case, let's get another paternity test done."After hearing that, her expression stiffened, and she turned her head away. "There's no need for that. The baby really is yours!" she insisted."How much longer do you plan on lying to me?" Watching Yvonne brazenly lie through her teeth, I could no longer contain my emotions. Perhaps she could see how livid I was, or perhaps she knew she really couldn't keep it from me any longer. She grasped my hand again and tried to explain, "Honey, it really isn't what you think. Michael and I were both drunk that night. I didn't expect this to happen, I swear!"Apart from that one time, Michael and I are innocent. Nothing else ever hap

"Honey, we're having a baby! You're going to be a father! Honey, we're finally having a baby—we're going to be parents! "Honey, why aren't you saying anything? Are you too happy?" Yvonne smiled and waved her hand in front of me, her eyes shining brightly. The unexpected pregnancy threw my plans into disarray. I stared blankly at the pregnancy test report before me, my emotions a tangled mess. "You're pregnant?"Yvonne smiled and nodded. Stepping forward, she wrapped her arms around my neck and said softly, "Yep, I'm pregnant!" I casually set the pregnancy test report on the table beside me, walked over to the refrigerator, and pulled out another can of beer.Yvonne frowned at me. She marched up, snatched the beer right out of my hand, and began to reprimand me. "What's wrong with you, Samson? I just told you that I hate it when you drink! Even if you're happy about having a baby, you still can't drink! "Anyway, I haven't eaten yet, and I'm starving. I want some fish soup, so h
