Chapter 16 The Secret Inside the Safe

​The words on the laptop screen seemed to freeze everyone in place: CHECK YOUR FATHER'S SAFE.

​Alex slowly turned to look at Kendall. "Dad..."

​Kendall didn't answer. The color had completely drained from his face as he stared at the screen, as though the message had awakened a nightmare he had buried decades ago.

​Camille finally broke the suffocating silence. "Mr. Swan... what safe are they talking about?"

​For a long moment, Kendall remained silent. Then, in a low voice, he said, "...Come with me."

​Thirty minutes later, the four of them arrived at Swan Mansion. The drive had been painfully quiet; no one spoke, and the silence inside the car felt heavier than any argument. Without saying a word, Kendall led them into his private study and walked straight to the large oil painting hanging behind his desk. Alex had seen that painting his entire life, but he had never imagined it was hiding anything.

​Kendall carefully lifted the painting aside to reveal a heavy steel safe embedded in the wall.

​"You've kept a safe here all these years?" Camille asked in disbelief, her eyes widening.

​Kendall nodded slowly. "I haven't opened it in twenty-six years."

​Alex frowned. "You've never opened it?"

​"No," Kendall shook his head. "Some memories are better left untouched."

​Taking a deep breath, he entered the combination. A soft click echoed through the room, and the heavy steel door slowly swung open. Inside were only three items: an old leather journal, a sealed brown envelope, and a silver pocket watch.

​Alex picked up the watch and turned it over. An engraving was etched into the back: Friendship Beyond Fortune. Beneath the inscription were two sets of initials: K.S. & R.H.

​Alex looked up. "Richard Hale."

​Kendall nodded. "He gave it to me on the day we became business partners. We were more than business partners, Camille—we were brothers."

​"My uncle?" Camille’s eyes widened further.

​Alex stared at his father in shock. "If you trusted him that much... why would anyone accuse him of betraying you?"

​Kendall reached into the safe and slowly picked up the leather journal. "Because that's exactly what I believed."

​He opened the journal. The handwriting on every page was his own, and each entry was carefully dated. He stopped on one particular page, his voice growing quiet as he read aloud:

​"September 14... Someone leaked every detail of the Swan Project. Only Richard had full access. I don't want to believe he betrayed me... but the evidence leaves me no choice."

Silence filled the room as Kendall closed the journal. "For twenty-six years, I believed Richard sold us out."

​Camille lowered her eyes. "My uncle always used to say that one mistake destroyed two families. I thought he blamed himself for leaving the company."

​"No," Kendall slowly shook his head. "I blamed him."

​Alex reached for the sealed brown envelope. "Should I open this?"

​Kendall hesitated for a moment before giving a slow nod. "Go ahead."

​Alex carefully broke the brittle old seal, unfolding the yellowed paper inside. The signature at the bottom was still clear: Richard Hale. Drawing a slow breath, Alex began reading the letter aloud.

​"Kendall... If you're reading this... then I have probably failed. I didn't betray you. Someone inside our own company has been working with the Phoenix Circle."

​Alex suddenly stopped reading. His heart pounded as he slowly looked up at Kendall. "This letter... you never read it?"

​Kendall slowly shook his head. "It arrived the morning after the warehouse fire. I couldn't bring myself to open anything Richard left behind."

​Swallowing hard, Alex continued reading. "I found proof... but they're watching me. If anything happens to me... trust no one. Not even the people closest to you."

​Camille covered her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. "My uncle... he was trying to warn you."

​Alex lowered his gaze to the final line, his voice dropping to a whisper. "The traitor's name begins with the letter..."

​He froze. The sentence ended abruptly; the bottom of the page had been burned away.

​"No..." Alex whispered. "The name is gone."

​At that exact moment, the mansion's security alarm suddenly blared. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

​Everyone looked up in alarm as the study door burst open. One of the security guards rushed inside, breathing heavily. "Mr. Swan!"

​Kendall turned sharply. "What is it?"

​"We've got an intruder!"

​Before anyone could react, every light in the mansion suddenly went out, swallowing the entire room in pitch darkness. Camille gasped.

​Miles away, Nina's warning echoed through Javier's mind, just as it now echoed in Alex's: "Someone is always one step ahead."

​A loud crash suddenly came from downstairs, followed immediately by another. Without hesitation, Alex pulled out his phone and switched on the flashlight.

​"Everyone, stay behind me," he commanded.

​The narrow beam of light swept across the study until it landed on the open safe. The leather journal was still there. The silver pocket watch was still there.

​But the letter was gone. Someone had stolen it the exact moment the room was plunged into darkness.

​A chilling silence settled over the mansion. Then, from somewhere deep within the house, a man's voice echoed through the hallway.

​"You're looking in the wrong direction, Alex. By the time you discover the traitor... everything you love will already belong to us."

​The voice faded into the shadows. A split second later—

​BANG!

​A gunshot shattered the silence.
