Rafael didn’t move. He remained on his knees, his eyes glowing with that unsettling, molten gold, staring at his own hands as if he were seeing them for the first time. The silence in the cramped maintenance closet was heavy, punctuated only by the dying hiss of the portable stove.

Dimas backed away until his shoulders hit the metal shelving. "Whoa. Hey. You okay? You’re staring like you’ve seen a ghost."

Rafael blinked, the golden hue in his eyes dimming into a more human shade of brown, though the intensity remained. He stood up with a fluid, terrifying grace, his movements no longer jerky or pained. He stretched his neck, hearing the vertebrae pop with a sound like snapping twigs.

"I’m more than okay, Dimas," Rafael said, his voice smooth and resonant. He turned to look at the discarded plastic container, then back at Dimas. "That broth. It did more than just close the wound. It leveled me up. I can feel the stats vibrating under my skin."

Dimas gripped his backpack straps. "Look, it was just some herbs and that claw-shard. Don't go getting any ideas. I’m not a pharmacy."

Rafael let out a short, sharp laugh, stepping into the dim light. "Don’t play coy. You know what you have. You’re a Chef. A Unique class. Do you have any idea how rare that is? In this world, people are killing each other for a scrap of bread, and you’re handing out liquid vitality."

"I’m just trying to survive," Dimas countered, his throat tight. "I didn't ask for a 'system' to turn my life into a cafeteria."

"Survival is a luxury you won't have for long," Rafael said, his tone turning clinical. He walked over to the door, peering through the crack. "You’re a civilian. You have no combat experience, no weapon skills, and you’re currently holding the most valuable resource in this city. You’re a walking target. The moment a monster—or a desperate 'Warrior'—gets a whiff of what you cook, you’re dead."

Dimas felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. "And you’re saying I should just trust you? You were ready to die an hour ago."

"Exactly," Rafael agreed, turning to face him. "I was dead. Now? I feel like I could walk through a wall of fire. That’s the power of your food. You provide the fuel, and I provide the muscle. It’s a clean deal."

Dimas crossed his arms, trying to suppress his shaking. "A partnership? Is that what we’re calling it? How do I know you won't just steal my gear and leave me in the next alley?"

"Because if you die, the meals stop," Rafael said, leaning in. His presence was overwhelming, a stark contrast to the jittery man from earlier. "Think about it, Dimas. You need a shield. You need someone to drag you through the mud so you can keep your hands clean enough to cook. I need someone who can turn a handful of trash into a god-tier buff. We’re perfect for each other."

Dimas looked down at his trembling hands. "What about the 'System'? You saw those prompts. It feels like... like I'm being used as a piece of software."

"We’re all being used," Rafael said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. "The System is the house, and we’re just the players. You want to be the house? Then you keep cooking. You keep growing. I’ll be your vanguard."

Dimas took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Fine. But I have rules. We don't steal, we don't kill people for sport, and I get a say in where we go. If I think a path is suicide, we don't take it."

Rafael flashed that razor-sharp smile again. "Fair enough. I’m not looking to be a king of a graveyard. I just want to survive and climb the ranks. We find a safer zone, we set up a base, and we scale. How much of that rice can you make at once?"

"Not much," Dimas admitted, gesturing to his meager supplies. "I need ingredients. Actual, quality stuff. That trash-bin scavenging isn't going to cut it if we’re going to be fighting higher-level things."

"The city is full of grocery stores, warehouses, and pantries," Rafael said, checking the hilt of his broken sword. "The monsters are guarding them. It’s a grocery run with an extra dose of terror. You in?"

Dimas glanced at his backpack. He looked at the empty pot, the faint, lingering smell of the broth still clinging to the air. He realized that for the first time since the world had flickered into neon, he wasn't just waiting for the end. He was planning for tomorrow.

"I’m in," Dimas said, his voice firmer. "But if you get us killed, I’m going to haunt you."

"If I get us killed, we’re already dead," Rafael quipped, stepping toward the door. "Let's check the perimeter. I need to see how much of a 'Warrior' that bowl of soup really made me."

Dimas followed him, his heart still hammering but with a newfound, rhythmic purpose. They pushed the heavy door open a fraction of an inch. The alley was dark, the moon obscured by the thick, choking smog of the city. Everything was eerily quiet, the kind of silence that usually preceded a massacre.

"Wait," Dimas hissed, grabbing Rafael’s sleeve. "Did you hear that?"

Rafael stiffened, his hand hovering over the shards of his sword. He didn't speak. He just inclined his head, his senses clearly heightened by the lingering effects of the broth.

A high-pitched, jagged sound ripped through the stillness of the street—a scream. It wasn't the guttural, bestial roar of the monsters they had encountered; it was human, thin, and desperate.

"Help! Someone, please! It’s on the roof! It—"

The scream was cut short by a wet, tearing sound, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thumping of something large landing on the pavement just a few buildings away.

Rafael looked at Dimas, his eyebrows raised. "That’s coming from the grocery store up the block. The one with the loading bay."

Dimas’s stomach churned, but the System pinged in his mind, a golden prompt flickering in his peripheral vision: [Quest Alert: Supply Retrieval. Difficulty: High. Reward: Rare Ingredient Cache.]

"That’s the store," Dimas whispered. "That’s where the food is."

"And that’s where the monster is," Rafael added, a grin spreading across his face that made Dimas’s blood run cold. "So, Chef. Are we making dinner, or are we being served?"

Dimas tightened his grip on the camping stove in his bag. "We go. But we do it my way. If we die, we die full."

"I like your spirit, kid," Rafael said, pushing the door fully open. "Let's see what’s on the menu."

They stepped out into the night, the cold air hitting their faces like a slap. Ahead, the grocery store loomed like a fortress in the dark, the silhouette of a massive, multi-limbed shape moving restlessly across its roof. Dimas didn't look back at the alley. He stared at the store, his mind already racing through flavor profiles, ingredients, and the terrifying, brutal logistics of survival. The game had truly begun.

The gate behind them didn't just close; it sealed with a heavy, pressurized hiss that echoed through the unnaturally quiet courtyard. Dimas felt the sound vibrate in his teeth."Welcome, Chef," the man in the white robes repeated, his voice smooth and airy, like he was reciting a well-rehearsed prayer. "We’ve been waiting to see what you could do with the ingredients we provide."Dimas stared at the kitchen. It was a masterpiece of stainless steel and industrial precision, sitting right in the middle of a world that was supposed to be rotting. "You’ve got a lot of high-end hardware for a place that's supposedly hiding from the system.""The system provides for those who understand its true purpose," the man replied, gesturing toward the gleaming countertops. "I am Brother Julian. We are the architects of the New Table."Rafael stepped up beside Dimas, his hand never straying more than an inch from the hilt of his broken sword. "The 'New Table'? Sounds like a cult name if I ever heard

Dimas stood frozen, his pulse drumming a frantic rhythm against the cold metal of the freezer door. The note didn't feel like a threat; it felt like a spotlight. He read the elegant, flowing script one more time, his fingers tracing the ink as if to verify it was real."Rafael?" he called out, his voice cracking. He didn't turn around, keeping his eyes locked on the paper.A heavy thud echoed from the hatch, followed by the clatter of a boot hitting the concrete. Rafael emerged from the shadows, his chest heaving, his armor stained with fresh grime. He slumped against the wall, sliding down until he hit the floor."Clear," Rafael gasped, wiping sweat from his brow. "They lost our trail at the secondary pier. I led them toward the container yard."Dimas didn't move. He held the paper out, his hand shaking. "Rafael. You need to see this."Rafael squinted in the dim, flickering emergency light of the warehouse. He stood up with a groan, taking the note. He read it in silence, his express

The neon haze of the city skyline cast long, flickering shadows against the brick facade of a derelict warehouse as Dimas and Rafael ducked into the relative safety of a shipping container. The air here was stale, smelling of rusted iron and salt, but for the moment, it was quiet.Dimas dropped his pack and pulled out the Dragon-Fire Saffron. It hummed in his hand, a dull, rhythmic vibration that seemed to sync with his own pulse."You’ve been staring at that thing like it’s going to start talking to you," Rafael said, leaning against the corrugated metal wall. He was still picking dried monster ichor off his jacket sleeve. "Is it going to explode again?""I don't think so," Dimas murmured, his eyes fixed on the microscopic runes etched into the pod. "The system says it’s 'Mythic.' Everything else I’ve found has been common or rare. This… this feels like it has a weight to it. Like it’s conscious."Rafael grunted, sliding down to sit on the floor. "Conscious or not, as long as it does

The golden light erupted from Rafael like a miniature sun, scouring the shadows from the corners of the basement. The massive creature—a sprawling, multi-limbed terror of scales and jagged bone—shrieked, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, and recoiled from the sheer intensity of the aura.Rafael didn’t wait for it to recover. He moved with a speed that defied physics, his boots cracking the concrete floor as he launched himself into the air."Stay down, Dimas!" Rafael roared, his voice layered with a resonant, metallic hum that wasn't there before."Don't you dare die on me, you idiot!" Dimas scrambled back, his hands still trembling from the heat of the cooking pot. "Finish it! Just finish it!"Rafael twisted in mid-air, his broken sword glowing with a blinding, iridescent indigo light—the residual energy of the infusion binding to the steel. The creature whipped a massive, spiked tail toward him, intending to swat him like a fly."Too slow!" Rafael barked, slashing through the a

The basement air was thick, swirling with iridescent violet steam that clung to the damp walls like a living thing. Dimas stared at the pan of 'Ether Broth,' his heart thudding in sync with the broth’s rhythmic, indigo pulse."You really did it, didn't you?" Rafael said, his voice quiet, almost reverent as he stepped closer. "That smell... it’s not just appetizing. It’s like it’s vibrating in my marrow."Dimas wiped his forehead with the back of his sleeve, leaving a smudge of soot. "It’s doing something to the air pressure, too. Feel that?""I feel it," Rafael replied, his hand tightening on the hilt of his sword. "It’s not just us feeling it, either. The basement floor is starting to hum."Dimas glanced at the high, barred window. "Is that a bad thing? Please tell me that’s not a bad thing.""It depends on who—or what—is listening," Rafael said, his gaze shifting to the staircase. "That smell is a beacon, Dimas. A neon sign in a dark world.""I thought you said this place was secure

The transition through the ventilation shafts was a nightmare of dust, cobwebs, and the claustrophobic scent of recycled air. Dimas dragged the heavy pack of supplies, his knuckles scraping against the rusted interior of the ductwork, while Rafael moved ahead of him with the silent, predatory grace of a ghost."Keep your head down, kid," Rafael whispered back, his voice sounding oddly amplified in the narrow tunnel. "We’re almost to the basement of the old butcher shop. It’s got a concrete foundation. Thick walls. No windows for them to spot us through."Dimas adjusted his grip on the pack, his breath hitching as he felt a scrape of metal against his ribs. "Are you sure this place is secure? I can't be cooking if we’re getting raided every twenty minutes. My focus is ruined, and if my focus is ruined, the food quality drops.""It’s a butcher shop, Dimas. Think about the irony," Rafael chuckled, his eyes glinting in the dark. "It’s a fortress. I checked it out during the first wave. Th
