Chapter 284

Author: Memo Harbor
The entire complex lay in deathly silence.

In a single sweep, Cyrus had wiped out most of the population, especially anyone inclined toward violence. Those who remained posed little threat now. At least, none posed a threat to him.

A few residents peeked through their windows, watching him in secret, fear shining in their eyes.

"Is Cyrus coming to kill us next?"

Terror spread through the buildings. His destination was obvious and deliberate: Building 18, the one that preached "harmonious living."

The realization nearly scared the residents of Building 18 to death. More than 60 people were still alive inside. Those who had died had frozen or succumbed to complications. Brandon, an idealist, had somehow managed to keep his principles intact until now.

That was exactly why Cyrus had spared Building 18 earlier.

Cyrus stopped at the entrance and fired two shots into the air. "Come out, Brandon."

Before long, Brandon emerged. His frame was short and thin, dark circles carved deep ben

After reading through Vincent's chat history, Cyrus honestly felt very little. Most of it was exactly what he had already expected. He had never once believed that he possessed some kind of overwhelming personal charisma that could make a schemer like Vincent swear undying loyalty to him.For someone like Vincent, playing both sides and choosing whichever option benefited him most was the most natural behavior in the world.Vincent knelt anxiously in front of Cyrus, desperately trying to justify himself. "Cyrus, you already injected me. How could I still dare to hurt you? If anything happens to you, I won't survive either!"Yes, I said some bad things about you before, but I never actually did anything to harm you! Right now, I'm completely on your side!"Cyrus said nothing. He simply rubbed his chin and began thinking. From Vincent's chat records with Severin, he had gained some additional, very important information.First, the weapons intelligence Vincent leaked only mentioned

Cyrus narrowed his eyes to thin slits. A flicker of killing intent flashed through them. "Hand it over. Now. You are not hiding something from me, are you?""No. Of course not. It is just… I just…" Cold sweat streamed down Vincent's forehead. His gaze darted around the room, and his right hand rose instinctively to cover his pocket.Cyrus did not bother arguing. He drew his black handgun and pressed the muzzle against Vincent's forehead. "So talking nicely does not work, huh?"Vincent panicked at once. "Cyrus, do not shoot. Do not shoot. I did say a few bad things about you to Severin, but that was only to mislead him. I did not mean any of it."Cyrus's patience snapped. His voice dropped. "Give it to me."Vincent no longer dared to stall. His hands shook as he pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and passed it over."It is out of battery," he muttered, making one last feeble attempt to resist.Cyrus glanced at the screen. The battery really was drained. That came as no surprise.

That night stretched far longer than either of them had expected. With the problems in the complex finally resolved for good, a weight lifted from Cyrus' chest. For the first time in a long while, he felt completely at ease. This time, he held nothing back.Zoey felt the same release. Desires she had suppressed for far too long finally burst free over the course of a single, overwhelming night. There was, however, a clear difference between them. Cyrus' stamina and energy were absurdly resilient. When morning arrived, he remained as lively as ever, sharp-eyed and brimming with vigor.By contrast, Zoey was utterly spent. She could barely get out of bed, let alone stay upright long enough to make breakfast. In an excellent mood, Cyrus pulled food from his pocket dimension and ate leisurely. All that remained was to see how things unfolded on Vincent's end.Once Vincent sent word, and once Cyrus confirmed that the opportunity was real and worth pursuing, he would go take a look wit

With the last thread of hope gone, Brandon's face dimmed. He liked to talk about "where there is life, there is hope," but in their current situation, surviving much longer was clearly unrealistic.Cyrus looked at him and spoke without warning. "In the end, you live or die by your own hands. Still, you did move me a little. You reminded me that even in the apocalypse, traces of human decency remain."He paused, then added with a light tone, "So don't say I gave you no chance."Cyrus reached into the oversized pocket of his coat with deliberate flair and rummaged inside. After a moment, he withdrew a bag of corn seeds and tossed it onto the ground. He kept searching. Wheat, rice, beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and more than a dozen other varieties of seeds and tubers spilled out and landed at Brandon's feet."This is your opportunity," Cyrus said calmly. "You can try growing food to keep yourselves alive. Or you can eat them directly. Do whatever you want. This is as far as I wil

Brandon went back inside and called out several times, his voice loud and urgent. "Deborah! Deborah! Come down here!"Before long, a long-haired woman hurried over. Brandon solemnly placed the baby in her arms. "From now on, this child is in your care. Raise her as if she were the daughter you lost. Nothing must happen to her. She is our lifeline. Do you understand?"Deborah Gallio had lost her own daughter not long ago. When she saw the baby girl before her, emotion overwhelmed her. She pulled the child tightly into her arms and refused to let go.Cyrus smiled faintly. "Looks like I can rest easy, then?"Brandon nodded again and again. "Yes. You can absolutely rest easy."Cyrus said nothing further. He had done everything he reasonably could for the baby. From this point on, whether she lived or died was no longer something he had the strength to concern himself with. His gaze swept over the scrawny Brandon, then lifted to Building 18 ahead of them."How many people are still a
