Chapter 353

Author: Ada Plus
Nicole arrived moments later and used the defensive position to drop one of them.

A dull thud followed, then a burst of sparks.

Cola let out a sharp, urgent bark.

It was a bomb.

Cola had carried explosives before. The second he caught the smell, he knew what it was and warned Nicole and Zeph.

Nicole's eyes widened. She grabbed Zeph and pulled him toward the stairs. "Move!"

Instead of falling back, he rushed forward and kicked the explosive pack down the stairs with all his strength.

Zeph and Nicole packed through the night.Everything they could carry went into the storage space. The stainless steel doors came off. They stripped both their apartments, along with the six doors on the stairwell. Two had been blown apart, but the other four were intact, so they took those, too. They would need them wherever they went next. They didn't stop at the doors. Blast-resistant glass, bulletproof panels, even the frames, cabinets, and curtain rods all got pulled out and packed. All eight adult rabbits were fine, but a few of the newborns hadn't made it through the blast.Nicole gathered them into a cardboard box and loaded it into the Hummer's trunk. At 5 a.m., they drove away from Crownview Residences, the place they had lived for two years. They stopped at the edge of the university district. Dawn was just breaking.Nicole sat in the passenger seat, quiet, her thoughts running. If it happened once, it would happen again. Ironvale Base wasn't going to let this go.

She hit the ground hard. Her ears rang, and the air filled with the acrid smell of gunpowder.Glass shattered. Dust and chunks of ceiling rained down. Her body wouldn't respond. It took several seconds before she could move, and when she did, a violent cough tore out of her.Cola rushed over, whining, grabbing at her clothes and trying to drag

Taking down the Drakebane Guild had come down to timing, positioning, and a bit of luck. This was different. Two people going up against a base of over 200 wasn't realistic. But hiding wasn't an option, either. If people from Ironvale Base could find them here, they could find them anywhere.Ironvale Base might look like a loose crowd, but it wasn't that simple."We'll deal with it as it comes," Zeph said after a moment. "I've got a few sets of body armor. There's one in Poppy's size. Go find it."Nicole went into the storage space to look. He really had prepared several sets. It was a little big on Poppy, but it would do."Can you adjust it?" Zeph checked the armor. "Make one for Cola, too."Nicole wasn't exactly skilled, but she could give it a try.Body armor was hard to come by. She didn't want to mess it up, so she measured Cola again and again. Luckily, he stayed still the whole time. She worked through the night and finished the adjustments. Once it was on, Cola look

Nicole picked up the binoculars and spotted a group of people carrying hoes and sticks, more than 20 of them, heading straight for Oakhaven Gardens. They looked like locals from nearby. They gathered at the entrance. It quickly turned into a standoff, then a fight. An alarm went off inside Oakhaven Gardens. Men, women, even older kids rushed out and formed a defensive line.Nicole tossed the half-eaten watermelon to Cola and focused on what was happening.Alex was leading them. Their fighting skills weren't anything impressive, but this clearly wasn't their first time. They had the advantage of home ground. They relied on simple but effective tactics, sand to the eyes and bursts of pepper spray. They drove the group back fast.Still, it looked like a few people got hurt. From start to finish, it was all close-range fighting. That evening, when the two of them drove back to their building, they saw a van parked at the entrance. The doors were wide open. Several bald men with tatt

Nicole finally understood. Oakhaven Gardens only took people who had the ability and the mindset to work together and survive.Alex paused, then smiled. "Ms. Floyd, you've got a good eye. Yes, we have a well. One of our residents knew how to dig it, and everyone pitched in. Each household gets about half a bucket of water a day. Do you still think ten pounds of grain is expensive?"From their conversation, he had already made up his mind about them and clearly wanted them to join. The community had people with all kinds of skills, but no doctor, and their defenses weren't strong. They needed someone like Zeph."We'll think it over and get back to you in a couple of days."They were used to staying cautious. A place that looked like a safe haven in times like this could just as easily be a trap. They didn't rush inside to look at the units. It was better to understand everything about Oakhaven Gardens first than walk in blind. They drove off, but didn't head home. Instead, they

"Zeph Dawson."Alex motioned for Nicole and Zeph to sit and handed each of them a hand fan.As they fanned themselves, Alex started asking questions, such as age, gender, current address, hometown, and family members.Nicole frowned. "We're just trying to rent a place. Is this a background check?""Sorry, I think there's been a misunderstanding," Alex said calmly. "When the disasters hit, Phase One of Oakhaven Gardens had just been completed. A few of us owners had already moved in. The rest of the units were still empty."No one survives alone. A few of us came together, and over time, we took in others. Right now, there are over 100 people living here."The environment is harsh, and people can be unpredictable. We do rent units, but not to just anyone. Once you move into Oakhaven Gardens, you're part of the community, so we're careful about who we let in."Before all this, I worked as a counselor. I handle the interviews. I want the people who come here to be decent, the kin
