LOGINThe silence that came after Adam's taunt was a long one. Almost as it the world itself was waiting to see if he would take it back.
Adam could see surprise on the faces of the surrounding people. The guy with the keys stared at him, disbelief flickering across his face before it twisted into something sharper. "Say that again you bastard." Adam's heartbeat slammed against his ribs. It was too late to back out now though. Behind his eyes, the system pulsed. --- [Time Remaining: 06:58] [Target: High Arrogance Sensitivity] [Current Perception: 12% — Insufficient] --- Twelve percent? What does that even mean? "Hey," the guy snapped, taking a step forward. "I'm talking to you." Up close, he was taller. Adam wasn't short by any means but he didn't have the time to go around body building which it seems his target had done. The guy also had the kind of presence that usually made people step back. Usually. Instinct screamed at him to apologize or laugh it off. It told him that he wasn't worthy of speaking to someone of this caliber. Say you were joking and end this. But then something cold settled in his chest. It wasn't confidence; at least not yet. But something steadier. It called itself the Arrogance system. If this was real… Then backing down wasn't an option. He exhaled slowly. Then looked at the car. It was sleek and polished. But he had noticed something. A small detail. The badge of the car was not the newest model. Not even close. He knew it because he had a part time job in a car wash and a lot of fancy cars came in. --- "I don't repeat myself," he said calmly. A ripple moved through the group. Adam could hear murmuring from the rest at the back. [Perception Increased: 21%] The guy's expression darkened. "Oh, I get it," he said, laughing once. "You're trying to be funny." "I'm not." [Perception Increased: 28%] "Then what are you doing?" someone else chimed in. "You're dressed like a begger, and you're acting rich?" There it was. The truth. The thing that could end this instantly. His stomach tightened. [Warning: Contradiction Detected] [Current Strategy: At Risk] Think. Think. Arrogance alone wasn't enough. If he kept forcing it, he would seem like a bluffer or even a Chuunibyou with an eighth-grader syndrome. He had to make them believe it. His gaze shifted back to the car. Then to the keys spinning lazily in the guy's hand. And then— He tilted his head slightly. Almost… unimpressed. "You think owning that makes you rich?" Silence! A sharper one this time. [Perception Increased: 41%] The guy scoffed. "It cost more than anything you've ever touched." "Maybe," Adam said, shifting his weight to look the guy in the eye. He paused a bit so his next words would make the desired impact. "But it's still outdated." --- [Perception Increased: 57%] --- "You're bragging about a model that lost value the moment you drove it out," he continued, voice steady now. "And you're acting like it's something impressive." Each word felt like stepping on thin ice. One wrong move and he might just find his face planted on the sidewalk. The guy's jaw tightened. "You don't even have a car." There it was. That was both the killing blow and the truth. [Perception Fluctuating…] [51%… 46%…] --- His pulse spiked as the meter constantly reduced. Say something. Anything. "Why would I?" he said. "I don't waste money on things that depreciate." --- [Perception Increased: 72%] --- Someone in the group shifted. Another glanced at the car. He had planted a seed of doubt. It was just a little seed but it was enough. The guy with the keys noticed it too. And that was worse than anything. "You're talking a lot for someone with nothing." [Time Remaining: 01:12] [Perception: 72% — Threshold: 75%] So close. Too close to fail now. Adam's gaze didn't waver. It didn't drop and it didn't flinch. He was in a zone he had never been before. "If you think I have nothing," he said quietly, "then you don't understand what real money looks like." Adam felt it now. The final silence. It was deep and unsettling. But it meant he had won. --- [Perception Increased: 89%] --- The guy didn't respond immediately. This wasn't something he could just laugh over. He also didn't speak. For the first time since they began their verbal spar, he hesitated on his response. [Mission Complete] A sharp chime rang in Adam's head. --- [Reward Granted: $100 × Multiplier (×3)] [Total Earned: $300] Everything froze but it wasn't the same as the earlier one. It felt like Adam had imagined it rather than it actually happening. [Balance Updated: $300.00] Adam's breath caught. It worked. He would have to check if it actually deposited into his account but he believed it would work. --- "Whatever," the guy muttered suddenly, looking away. "You're not worth my time." But it didn't sound as confident as before. They group turned away and their conversation resumed but something had changed. Slightly. And Adam felt that change was irreversible. He stood there for a moment longer before walking away. Three hundred dollars. Just like that. It wasn't much money in the grand scheme of things but Adam had to work twenty hours a day for two days to earn an amount like that. --- Slowly, he looked down at his empty hands and clenched it. A small, disbelieving smile formed on his face. If he could get $300, then he could also get $30,000. Heck! He might even be able to get $3,000,000 "So this is how it works." His smile faded a little. Because now, he understood something important. This wasn't free money. It was a game. And while this mission had no penalty, it didn't mean others wouldn't have. Behind his eyes, the system pulsed again. --- [New Mission Available] [Spend at least $100 on food] [Time limit- 40 minutes] Adam glanced back at the restaurant that started this whole thing. "I definitely love this system"It was a chilly Saturday morning so there were not much people out on the street. Most were either sleeping in from the stressful weekdays or passed out from partying on a Friday night.A tall wiry built youth, with a slightly unkempt dark hair, just walked into a clothing store. The store had just opened up for the day so while there were not much people in it, every customer seemed to be someone worth something.Of course the only exception was the youth, who looked like he had been picked from a homeless shelter with his faded jeans and old shirt.Adam had received a call in the early morning by Olivia to bring her phone which she had forgotten at his place. So he had gotten dressed and prepared just to realize his available clothes weren't up to par. That led to the current situation where he had to stop by a store to change his style. An attendant walked up to him to ask if he needed assistance but he refused her. Since he himself wasn't even certain of what he wanted, he decide
Olivia's POVThe night air was a bit chilly and slightly biting to the skin but Olivia stood at the entrance of her place of residence, a seven-floor building. She lived on the top floor because it was the cheapest and therefore it was also unfortunately the smallest.Taking in a deep breath, Olivia entered into the building. It had taken a strong force of will to not crash out in the premium cab after Adam had escorted her to it. And that was the issue. She understood his earlier reasons for pushing her away. While she could have actually done something major to help him, it would mean admitting her loss to her parents and doing it as Olivia Dunham. So, she had tried helping in the way Olivia, just Olivia, could do. She gave him large discounts anytime she saw him, trying to make him take it for free didn't work and seemed insulting. She had timed her working hours across her three jobs to always meet him. Once in a while, she gave him anonymous gifts. She had even given up a high jo
Startled at the unexpected question, Adam stumbled over his next words. Misunderstanding his lack of answer as implied consent, Olivia brought up her phone immediately. "I might know someone who can help us... If we call the police-" she began rambling, her hands trembling. Talking her hands into his and placing her phone into his pocket, Adam could only keep repeating that she was mistaken as a means of reassurance. It turned out that calming down a girl who thought you had sold your kidney was an eye catching sight. So when passersby began giving the pair strange looks, Adam had no choice but to board a taxi heading back to his place with Olivia in tow. *** Adam didn't comprehend the full weight of his actions after he had to sit Olivia on his couch and head back outside to the nearest supermarket for supplies. He didn't still grasp it when he bought a bunch of toiletries, snacks, and beverages for the duo. It was at the moment of stepping into his new apartment, for the th
Adam leaned back slightly in his chair, his expression neutral despite the shifting tension around the table.Olivia was still standing.Melissa was still seated.Daniel glanced between all three of them like he'd just walked into a conversation halfway through and decided he might as well enjoy it."So," Daniel said casually, slipping his hands into his pockets, "are we interrupting something?""Not really," Adam replied.Melissa smiled faintly. "We just got here."Olivia's gaze lingered on Melissa for a second longer before she pulled out a chair from a nearby table and sat without asking. Daniel followed suit, dragging another chair over. Now it was a four-person table.Adam sighed at how the simple dinner escalated. He exhaled quietly."Is everything okay? I heard what happened earlier today," Olivia said vaguely, her tone tense and full of concern.Adam couldn't possibly
The new place was far better than Adam's former living area which didn't say much considering the price he paid for it.It had a wide living area. The floor was tiled edge-to-edge, each piece evenly laid without cracks or uneven lines. The walls were clean and uniformly painted white.A wooden staircase rose along one side, finished with a simple railing, leading to the upper floor. Beneath it, space was left open, not boxed in or repurposed. The kitchen sat just off the living room, separated by a short counter. Cabinets lined the walls in straight rows, all matching, all aligned. The sink and fittings were fixed firmly, no looseness, no visible repairs.Upstairs, two bedrooms faced opposite sides of a narrow corridor. The rooms were evenly shaped, with flat ceilings and windows set properly into the walls.Outside, through the windows, the estate stretched in neat rows into identical houses, paved roads, trimmed edges, and no visible clutter. It made Adam feel like he had been rebor
Walking on the busy sidewalk with a backpack sling over his arm, Adam thought about his actions towards Roberts. He didn't exactly regret speaking his mind but he had acted fully on emotions which was unlike him."Arrogance system, huh?" he muttered."Leaving Roberts place is for the best but was it worth spending six hundred dollars on?"If he continued randomly throwing money anytime he had to complete a mission, there would reach a point where the rewards wouldn't cover up the money spent so he'd be sustaining losses."And I should try to increase my multiplier for higher rewards." Adam groaned.Receiving strange looks from people walking past him, Adam let out an awkward chuckle and hurried on his way.It would not be wise to spend his entire balance just to get a high end apartment. He would rather get one around the $1k - $2k range.Suddenly Adam felt a pulse on his eyes and the blue holographic screen of the system flashed before him.[New Mission Available][Secure a high-valu
