She is no saint. She is no savior. She is the temptress who thrives on revenge, a woman whose charm is as lethal as her kiss. But with every world, every mission, and every heart she wins… Scarlet begins to wonder. Is she the player in this game of fate— Or the one being played?
View MoreThe smell of disinfectant mixed with soap hit her nose. Her eyelids trembled as she slowly opened her eyes, only to close them again when the sharp light of the room hit her eyes.
She groaned, raised her hand, intending to rub her aching forehead, but a tingling pain at the back of her hand stopped her, and her frown deepened.
"Scarlet, Scarlet, you're awake!" A troubling voice of an elder reached her ears, confusing her even more.
'What's going on?' She wondered.
The voice she just heard belonged to her mother without doubt, but why did her usually nonchalant mother sound so scared? And why was she calling her name so stressfully?
Scarlet tightened her eyes, ignored her aching head, and recalled what had happened. She remembered helping her mother in the kitchen as it was time for dinner, but things suddenly became chaotic in her vision, her legs felt like they weighed tons, and her head felt light. She remembered falling back even when she tried so hard to hold herself, and she also remembered she heard a fading voice as her consciousness blanked.
Scarlet's eyes flew open, darting around in panic. The pure white of the room made her eyes sting, but she kept them open and tried to look around. The low sound of the monitor beside her bed finally woke her, and she whimpered as she turned her head to look at her mother, who was staring at her with eagle eyes.
"Mother..." She called, her voice cracking. She was scared. "Why?" She asked. She could see the paleness of her mother's face and the fear in her eyes.
She knew something had gone wrong. Her mother would never be this scared if she had only fainted.
'Do they know?' Her heart raced hard. Every breath hurt like hell.
A single tear rolled down her mother's face as she slumped back in her seat. "Why, Scarlet? Why did you keep this to yourself? Why did you never tell anyone? Do you, do you want to die so much?" Her face grimaced, pain evident in her voice.
Scarlet's heart clenched, and her eyes turned red. She looked away, biting hard on her tongue. 'Die? If it were so easy, I would have died long ago, Mum.' She thought, and a bitter smile hung on her lips. "I'm sorry, mum." She whispered. 'But, even if time rewound, I still wouldn't let anyone know.'
The door opened, and the sound of footsteps attracted Scarlet's attention. She saw a female doctor walking toward her with a smile. "Hi, Scarlet." The doctor said calmly. "I've discussed things with your parents..." She didn't even give Scarlet the chance to react. "They've paid for your heart transplant, and we will arrange it as soon as possible. Trust me, Scarlet. You will be out of this pain as soon as possible."
Scarlet's body trembled as she snapped her head to her mother. Her teeth gritted so hard that blood slowly sipped out of the corner of her mouth and panic washed over her. "No." Her voice was breaking. "No, mother, please." She pleaded.
'Please. Please, mother. Don't take this away from me, too. This, this is the only thing that keeps me going.' She cried inwardly.
"I don't want this surgery!" She cried out. 'What do I do when the pain is gone? How do I know I'm still alive without the pain?' Scarlet felt scared.
Her mother held her hand and squeezed it gently. "Scarlet, Scarlet, listen to me. I know you're scared but trust me, you will be fine. Your dad and I believe in you. You are strong, my darling." She tried to pacify, but Scarlet's heart felt like it would soon stop beating altogether.
She felt agitated. Not even her labored breathing stopped her from shaking her head incessantly. "I won't do the surgery. I won't!" She cried as her vision slowly turned blurry, and even her voice failed as she fainted.
MONTHS LATER...Scarlet, who had been living under watch for 4 months, was being wheeled toward the operating room with a listless expression on her face. She looked at her teary mother, her smiling father, and her crying siblings, and a bitter smile formed on her sunken face.
She looked away from them, trying her best to curb the growing irritation in her fainting heart. 'If only they cared this much before, I wouldn't have gone through so much pain. I wouldn't have been this broken. They don't. They really don't know how much I've cried. They don't know how long I waited for them to hold my hand. They don't know how much I wanted them to look at me and see how much I was struggling. I was so young... I was just 12... I needed them.' A painful tear rolled down Scarlet's face as she silently recalled her dark days. 'But it's been 9 years now. I no longer need anyone.'
She closed her eyes, pushing away her tears. She wouldn't cry. She had cried so much that she told herself she would no longer cry, and well... 'It's all coming to an end soon. Isn't it?' She smiled and lowered her eyes to look at her family.
"It's okay. Crying makes you look ugly. Don't cry." 'Don't cry. I've cried it all for you. You all don't deserve to cry anymore.'
"We won't cry, baby. Dad and Mum will be waiting for you here. We know you are strong, and you will survive this." Her dad comforted, showing Scarlet a warm look she had never seen in him before.
Scarlet nodded. 'Of course, I'm really strong. Isn't that the reason it hurt so much? I'm so strong that an overdose doesn't even kill me. I've closed my eyes several times, hoping I would be dead by the time I open my eyes again... Dad, your daughter is indeed uselessly strong.'
She slowly closed her eyes as the door firmly separated her from her family, and soon, she was put to sleep.
Scarlet had no idea how much time had passed, but she soon felt a familiar despairing feeling___ It was really similar. It was the same feeling she had when she took her last overdose after hitting her chest so many times. It was the feeling that made her feel like she was about to die___ which she later survived.
The loneliness, the fear, the despair that came with death...
Scarlet wondered, was she finally about to end it all?
"She's dying, doctor!"
"She's bleeding so much!"
"Wait..."
The voices faded away as darkness grabbed hold of Scarlet, and her consciousness gave in.
Klaus was surprised. Scarlet had never rejected him before. Everyone in school knew how Scarlet ran after him, wagging her imaginary tail like a dog and answering to every call of his. The reason he noticed Scarlet in the first place was her obsession with him. She did it so much that she made the teacher place them together in class. In a class where males and females had to sit separately, Scarlet made her family sponsor the school so they could place her beside him. Klaus still remembered how the event shook the whole school that day. Everyone talked about it. Many congratulated him for winning Graham's heiress's heart, while some pitied him for attracting the attention of such an average-looking and dumb girl. He felt like he was indeed unlucky. He was handsome. He was one of the most handsome men in the academy, and many girls were after him, so why would he want to be with the average Scarlet? But he returned home and thought about it. Scarlet was rich and loved by her fami
"Scarlet, you are so beautiful!""Who would have believed that Scarlet is even more beautiful than Lyn?" "Don't even compare them. Scarlet is a real beauty.""She shouldn't have hidden her beauty for so long. People wouldn't have mocked her for being ugly.""Humph! Why does a beauty like her need anyone's acknowledgment? She's beautiful already, and she doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. Who among those who mocked her is as beautiful as her?"Murmurs filled the hall. Many were no longer interested in the dance. Their gaze lingered on Scarlet's every step as if she would disappear before them. Among these crowds were Lyn, Klaus, and Ray. Ray was so stunned that he couldn't stop staring. His lips parted, and he let out a low curse. "Klaus?" He called dazedly. There was no response. Ray searched around with his hand until he got hold of Klaus' phone. He snatched the phone from Klaus and hugged it to his chest. "I will have to borrow this, Klaus." He whispered. Klaus, whose gaze
Scarlet found herself dumbfounded. She had always thought that the Cyn in this world would be a replica of her world's Carlos, but she never expected them to be so identical! She would have thought he was Carlos if not for the indifferent expression on Cyn's face even when he held her and the big 'Zero' affection on his head. The Carlos of her world wouldn't have zero affection for her..."Hello," She arranged her skirt properly and greeted him shyly. Heck, she needed to act good before a handsome guy!Especially when he looked so much like her idol... Um. Cyn, who had just gone out of his way to save a stranger, cleared his throat and stood right. Even though he was confused as to why he would spare anyone a glance at a place his mother forced him to escort her to, he still did not want to be rude. "Hi," He replied and turned around to leave. Scarlet smiled cunningly. 'After staying in such a boring world for so many hours, I finally found you, and you still want to leave like t
Scarlet's eyes dimmed, fear palpable in her black orbs. "I don't want to..." Her words trailed off. She didn't really want to be pregnant. She wasn't up to the task... especially when the father was so irresponsible. Scarlet knew she would have to surrender a lot for the mission, but she wasn't ready. She wasn't ready to waste a life... again. Fateball appeared beside Scarlet. It stared at her gloomy eyes and suddenly felt bad for her.It wasn't silly. It had gone through Scarlet's life before it attached itself to her and knew how deep Scarlet's trauma was. It also knew about that particular moment when Scarlet lost her child___"You are not pregnant." It said in a solemn voice. "This is the beginning of the timeline, and tonight is your birthday." Scarlet's eyes widened. "Really?""Yes," Fateball revealed, a slight smile forming. "You just turned 18 today." Scarlet's gloomy face finally morphed into a pleased smile, and she rubbed her stomach carefully. "Thank goodness. I hav
Scarlet frowned as she took in her surroundings- the void around her. She realized she couldn't see anything except a vast field of clouds. "Where is this?" Mumbling, she tried moving forward, but the fear of falling tied her to a spot. Fateball rolled around, seemingly enjoying itself. "This is my space." It twisted its fur gently. "It's formless now because I'm still an infant..." Trailing off, it rolled closer to Scarlet and poked her nose. "But we can grow together, right?" Scarlet nodded her head in a daze. "Good. Now, let's start with your mission." Immediately after Fateball mentioned "mission," a string of words appeared before Scarlet...[Conquer 100 worlds, and you will be able to save Carlos. Conquer another 100 worlds and restore Carlos' happiness. Conquer another 100 worlds and wipe his memories of you.]"Are you ready?" Fateball asked. Scarlet stared at the words, reading over and over again as she wondered what was going on. It wasn't her first time seeing somethin
Scarlet stood by the side, watching as her family cried over her corpse. She stared at her body, which was about to be cremated, and her heart clenched. She had been dead for two weeks, and in those two weeks, she had been forced to watch her family cry daily over her, her best friend breaking down every time she saw anything related to her, and even the people she rarely communicated with were all shedding tears when they heard about her death. She had been feeling conflicted ever since then. Her mind wouldn't stop imagining scenarios of change. What if she hadn't died? What if she had fought with her parents when it all happened, if she had run away from home, if she had tried to be stronger... What if, what if, countless what ifs had been running through her mind, but it only annoyed her even more. She hated to see her family cry over her. She hated the fact that she was the source of their sorrow when everything she ever wanted was to put a smile on their faces despite everythi
